Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Please, please get checked. It may be unpleasant but it might also save your life. My dad had colon cancer back when he was in his early fifties. Then about 10 years ago his mother got the disease (how strange she didn't get it first). My doctor informed me that since both my father and grandmother had it, I will most likely also get it. I was told that since it takes about 10 years to show up, my dad most likely had it at 40 and therefore she wants me to get checked at 30.

These days the procedure isn't as unpleasant as it once was. Please get checked!

MickeysMommy,

Yes, my brother's doctor told him he probably had colon cancer since he was 20. Who gets checked at 20?

My family has to go every 3 years now. I'll gladly do it!

Just lost my mom to colon cancer in January. If not for some other flukey health problems, we wouldn't have caught it. As it was, we had three years to both fight it and come to terms with it. Since I know I'm at an increased risk now, I plan to speak with my doctor about getting checked during my next visit - I'm 35 and I figure it's never too early to start! If I get this rotten disease, I want to find it early - it's 99% curable if caught in the early stages.

At my mom's service, I talked about the importance of getting checked and offered pamphlets from the NCCRA for everyone to take home. I've also arranged to make the pamphlets available at the vintage auto races my family is very involved with. The more information that gets out there, the better.

Oh WOW- how this hits home. My mom (85) went for a colonoscopy yesterday and a mass was found, dr. is pretty sure it is cancer. The biopsy results will be bak in a day or two. He wnats to do a ct scan to make sure it hasn't spread. it is down low and she will need a colostomy and will have it for the rest of her life. We haven't told her yet want to wait on the results for sure. I don't know if she will agree to surgery. She had her knee replaced for the second time about 6 weeks ago and is still in the re-hab unit of a nursing home for that. On Monday they did an ultrasound of her gallbladder and she said she wasn't having any more surgeries even if it was her gall bladder, so I don't know what she will decide to do. Her mom had this too and died on the table ( i think there was some other kind of complication) his sister has also had it. Talk about risk. I'm kind of lost in space right now-between having a terrible cold and now this.

My mom went for her first one at the age of 80. Yep, she had colon cancer. They removed one foot of her colon. They didn't find any anywhere else. She has 4 doses of chemo to go. She is going to be 81 soon. She is doing very, very well. :D

Yes - get checked! My cousin was diagnosed at age 49, and would have never known unless he had the colonoscopy. Went through chemo and is doing great today.

Giving this a bump because it's so important. My family has been affected many times over by this disease. Get screened.
