Well , MY real life has not jived with what they say. I'm sure that overall, maybe it's true, but I do not know a single person close to me for whom having a college degree has made them better off in life.

If you don't like your situation, stop complaining and change it. ::yes:: This defeatist attitude you appear to have will get you nowhere.

Are you stalking me or something? Jeez, if you don't like what I have to say, either put me on ignore or don't read my posts. There is no need for personal attacks on people on the DIS.

If I made a personal attack, please point it out. FYI, disagreeing with you is not a personal attack. You can't complain incessantly about your job situation and not expect anyone to make a comment. I recall seeing a very obvious attack from you on the pitt bull thread. I could copy/paste it here if you don't remember. ::yes::

If we call "better off" "higher paid" then I've actually seen the opposite. People I know who did not go to college are employed at jobs, while most people who did get their degrees are employed in careers. It's a fine line, but there is a distinction.

It saddens me seeing all the anti-college posts. To not go just because you think you can get paid just as much as you would if you had gone is a poor reason, IMO.

I live in a fairly affluent area of Metro Atlanta. Virtually everyone I know who has advanced in their career to the point they consider themselves a success, has some type of degree.

Better off in life is another thread altogether.

A degree gives you options. It opens doors. What you do after those doors are open is up to you. The most important thing is to get your foot in the door.

College has given me a number of intangibles as well as the poise and skills to accomplish my goals. My degree has never had anything to do with my career; however, my degree has always opened doors. My life experiences as a result of those opportunities have enriched my life both figuratively and literally.

True. Your resume won't even get off the HR secretary's desk for even mid-range supervisory jobs at a lot of places. In our local companies, a lot of jobs that didn't require a degree 10-20 years ago do now.

My 2 cents and what myself and DW are teaching our daughters:

Going to college and getting a college degree in something is a requirement, not an option. Do whatever you want after college but no matter what path you follow in life and no matter what life throws at you, you will always have your college degree to fall back on if you need it.

I agree with JoeThaNo1Stunna that my high school was harder than the college I attended. I also learned a lot more in high school than college! They were both small, private catholic schools-well respected. The kids I attended college with were far behind the kids I attended high school with as far as reading, math, science, etc... The teachers at my college were not as good as my high school teachers.

I think college has become a big money making scheme. The prices the schools are charging are insane for the education our youth are getting. At some schools that are elite you get a fantastic education, but they also charge an arm and a leg!

It is great to have a college degree but I don't think you need one in order to "make it." I know plenty of trade people, business owners, real estate and stock investors, and people with that go get it attitude that have done WAY better for themselves than those with a piece of paper could. It comes down to DRIVE and how badly you want it.

Most instate public universities offer excellent educations.

Thanks for all of the post everyone . . . . . .

My husband will be getting his "sugar mamma" in a few weeks (thats why he's putting me through school) and I am now forcing him to take night classes in the fall.

Once he finishes this tour, he will probably get out and attend school full time, while I support both of us. Then, we will have a dual degree family in less than 6 years!

I have realized from personal experience that not having the paper was the reason why I was let go.

I was able to secure a job as an engineer (worked as an assistant; then was moved up, because the person in the position couldn't hack it); so with that job experience and my B.S. in Computer Information Systems, I feel that I should be able to have some doors opened for me so I can make a better life for my family!

College has not achive the career in computers that I won't. I went to college to get the degree in computers just so to so I have my college degree computers. I was already self taught in computers to begin with.

That college degree have not open doors for me that I thought it would.

I have even did volunter work to teach at the rec centers for free just to get experince.

I finally got my first computer job at Christmas time in computers because I call every day and beg h**** out the manager.

At one job where I am manager it was not necessary to have the college degree.

The other job I have a college degree was not necessary at all. This job does not care that have experince at all much less a college degree you will get the same start pay as every one else.

Yes I know computers is not a good career right now in this econcomy. I love computers and always won'ts to do something with.

My dh has a career without a degree. He's been in the same business for 12 years, it's definitely a career. We bought our first house 10 years ago. The house we are in now (just moved), we just made a call, gave them our ss#'s and were approved. No proof of income or past taxes or anything needed.

::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes:: i would hate to see a teenager read this thread and think "well, i don't need to go to college." i agree with tandrjohn. if i have children, not going to college won't be an option.

There are exceptions to every rule: Bill Gates, your DH...Generally speaking and statistically proven, if you have a college degree you are going to make more money in your lifetime than you would if you don't have a degree. The career versus job thing I think is a matter of opinion. I have a degree and a career but when I go to work in the morning, I go to my job!:p
