We had a thread several years ago when my DD was in college. My great nephew just moved to college far from home so I want to send him the occasional package.

My favorite for DD was the annual plastic pumpkin stuffed full, the handle tucked inside, opening covered with packing tape, and mailed with the label slapped on the top. Anyone know if this is still OK?

You can mail most any packaging.

You will be charged a nonmachinable surcharge.

I mailed one each of the last 4 years and it arrived just fine.

No additional postage required. I printed a label at home and no additional charge was requested.

Between DS and my nieces, I've mailed 3 pumpkins in the last few years (2 dorm addresses and 1 off campus) - so fun, and they all arrived just fine!!

I usually sent my son packages directly from Amazon. Sometimes it was things he asked for and other times I surprised him with snacks or other fun stuff.

When DS first left for college, his friend's mom organized a "care package party" for a bunch of freshman moms. We had 12 moms, so each person chose an item and brought enough for everyone. We ended up with a variety of snacks, small flashlights, some toiletries, batteries, etc. We each walked around the table with a box and made a care package for our own child. Then we passed around cards that all the moms signed. So each kid got a box of goodies and a card signed by not just their own, but 12 moms! My son loved his! It was also good therapy for the moms since our kids had just flown the nest. We talked about our drop-off experiences, how the kids were doing so far and commiserated with each other. A few dads were hanging out in the house and they periodically brought us more sangria and snacks and then would quickly disappear. It was great party!

We did this once but everyone brought a half dozen different gifts, the boxes were huge. Tried to pumpkin once, it was return to sender.
