College and Kids

Our kids are and will be going on unsubsidized loans.....
the do not have to pay till they are out of college.....
yes I also feel that we should help as much as we can to insure that they can get the best education possible, but, like owning a car...if YOU make the payments on THEIR car..me and the MRs. feel that they will not appreciated it as much as they would if they made, or at least help with the payments.
My oldest is 20..in her 3rd year of college, she lives at home, does not pay rent, does not pay for food, we payed for half her car, and pay for most of the maintenance on it.
That is our way of helping........but they also need to learn responsibility too...and the Value of an education...

I feel that parents should try to help their children with their college costs as much as possible but that they should not feel as if they must send their child to the best college out there.

We are very lucky because our daughter has a couple of good scholarships that have payed for her freshman year although she may not get them again (these scholarships aren't automatically renewable, she has to apply for them again next year and there is no guarantee she'll get them again). If she doesn't get the scholarships next year then my dh and I will do what we can to make up the difference. Our big worry is grad school and how we are going to afford that one. I'm afraid Ashli will have to take out loans for that but we're going to do our best to get her through grad school with as few loans as possible.
