Because of DH's profession, he is occasionally asked to do a "case review" to determine if a medical legal case is "defensible" or not. It involves several hours of reviewing a complex medical case to see if it complies with standards of care, either for the plaintiff or the defendant. He bills the attorneys directly and most of the them pay. On rare occasions, particularly when the attorneys are on the losing end of the decision, there is a hesitancy to pay. One attorney has been billed periodically since March. I contacted him personally and he told me that the insurance carrier would not pay the bill unless it was submitted on a HCFA medical claims form with a diagnostic code. I told him that this was impossible because to do so constitutes medical insurance fraud. The subject reviewed was never seen or ever a patient. I followed up the conversation in writing. Six weeks go by and I heard nothing. Fortunately the attorney is also in Ct. so I printed off the materials to sue him in small claims court. Of course, one cannot "threaten" and say "if you don't pay you will be sued", however, I wasn't looking forward to driving 15 miles, writing a check for $75 so I thought I would give it one more try. I called the office, introduced myself to the secretary and asked if the attorney was an "individual, an LLC, a partnership or a corporation" since I needed it for the form that I was completing with regard to the unpaid obligation. Within an hour I got a call. "The check is in the mail from the insurance carrier. (they are attorneys for the insurance carrier) "Sorry for the inconvenience. The adjuster was able to work around the billing form issue".
