I have some Beanie Babies, along with some old Smurf figurines, Cherrished Teddy's and quite of bit of Tony Stewart collectibles (when he was #20). Are any of these items selling for much on ebay or Craigslist? I am trying to "declutter" and wondered if it is worth it to sell them yet, or hang on to them for a while longer?
Thanks for any insight.

The Beanie Babies are pretty much giveaways. No one is paying to take them off of your hands. The other collectibles might bring some money but nothing like they would in a good economy. If you don't have to part with them in order to pay the bills, then I recommend holding on to them until the market improves.

My father-in-law is a dentist. Someone just gave him a HUGE tub of beany babies to give out to the kids after they get a cleaning/cavity filled. It's like a treasure chest. Anyway, maybe that's a good way to get rid of them?

The smurfs are making a comeback and could be worth something depending on the character. Other than that probably not much.

Around here, collectibles are pretty much giveaways. Nobody is willing to pay money for them right now.

I'd hold on to them and hope they increase in value unless you really need the money. If you do, put them on Craig's List for small amounts and maybe they'll sell in your area.

Don't get my started on Collectors plates. We inherited a series of Sound of Music ones that are worth like 5.00 a plate if we could find anyone interested but no one is. And all the Gone with the Wind plates and Star Trek plates that my husband just had to have and paid ridiculous prices for aren't worth much either. Sigh.

Thanks! Sounds like it's best to just keep them in the boxes for now. Maybe someday my great great great grandchild will be able to get something for them. That may be a while since my daughter is only 12!

I came across an article entitled "Eight collectibles you won't make any money on" not too long ago.

Yep, beanie babies made the list.

As others have said, I think the reason basically came down to over supply and lack of demand.

And I bet I could come up with even more collectibles to add to that list.

I admit we have our fair share of collectibles around here; but most were gifts, it's not like we were buying them as investments trying to make money on them, so not really a big deal. I do feel sorry for folks who thought the collectibles they were buying in the hey day were going to fund their retirement though. Yikes!

I liked this quote from the article I referenced:

"If you treasure one of these items, don’t let the drop in value diminish the pleasure you find in it. if it tugs at your heartstrings, it’s worth what you paid for it. Be content with that — and don’t check eBay."
