This kid who knows my DD (BF of one of her GFs) keeps calling collect from JAIL! I refused calls maybe 50 times then picked it up and chewed him out. Asked why he was locked up and he told me 'cause they were investigating him being shot at! (Yeah right! And my PhD is in STUPID! And this is just the kind of kid I want calling my DD!:( ) Told him never to call again collect. Refused maybe 12 calls in the last 3 days now and thought he gave up 'cause yesterday we didn't get a single call. Today I check the answering machine and he's called every 15-30 minutes. It took me 10 minutes just to delete them all! I don't really want to block all collect calls in case something happens to the DD or another family member. Any ideas?

Can you call the jail and report him for harrassment?? Maybe this will end his phone privileges....

I think (but am not positive) that the phone(s) "prisoners" use for making collect calls, and the phone someone who was just arrested or brought in for questioning would use to call home would not be the same numbers... but you might want to call the prison and verify that.

Many years ago in college, living in a house with a bunch of women in our 20's, somehow some of the prisoner's in the State Prison got our phone number and we got collect calls almost every day... we called the prison to see if they could help us out (before the day's of caller ID and call blocking) and somehow they were able to disable our number from being dialed out from the phones the prisoner's had access too. This was like 20 years ago though and things have changed a lot.

That really stinks!! I would call the jail. They are surely able to do something about this.

Call the jail and they can either take away his phone privilages (I thought these guys only got a certain amount of calls per day???) or they can block your phone number from being dialed out.

I don't know who it was, but we got a collect call from a prisoner the other day. The automated operator said:

"You have a collect call from Milwaukee County Detention center" or something like that. It gave me the option that said "If you wish to not receive collect calls from this facility, please press 2". I pressed 2, the automated thing said "Thank you" and hung up.

Call the phone company and ask if they can block it in your area. if they can't and someone else can, they should be able to tell you who to call...

Yikes! I would not be happy at all either! Hope it stops for all of your sakes!

Oh man, that takes a lot of nerve to keep calling. I'd call the jail too. They should be able to do something about it.

Not that I have personal jail experience -- ;)
I have a friend who has many --ehem-- troublesome relatives who often end up in jail. (Bunch of drunks to put it bluntly.)
She use to have that problem. She never acceoted their calls, so they gave up.
This is in IN, and I am sure it varies.
I asked my friend how they were allowed to call so often. She said the jail does not discourage it because they charge the prisoners over $2 a minute -- even for local calls! So it is a profitable business for them, if this is the case.

It's rather embarassing to admit, but a relative on DH's side of the family (certainly not mine:D ) is a frequent resident of the County Jail. (We are sure he enjoys it there so he doesn't have to work - he's the laziest person ever) This relative calls my BIL collect constantly to ask him to put some money into his account. (Can you believe the audacity?) BIL finally got sick of it and now refuses to accept the charges - but the jail won't do anything to stop it. I feel for you - it seems once they get a hold of someone's number, they will continue to use it.

I had a problem with someone calling all the time also. Not from jail and not collect, but they would not give up. Someone had given out our phone number as their own, and all of the phone calls we got were from the same number on caller ID. We tried answering and telling them nicely that So and So did not have that phone number. We tried letting the phone roll to voice mail which the caller always hung up on. We even called the number back one night, ask for the person who they always ask for. When they said she was out and asked if we would like to leave a message, DH said" Yeah! Tell her to quit giving out our phone number as hers." NOTHING WORKED!!!

I finally called the phone company, and they walked me through how to block a single number (or several if you want). It worked like a charm; no phone calls from that number since.
