collapsable wheelchairs?

I'm sure I have seen people on the busses, sitting down toward the front, holding a collapsed wheelchair, much the same as one holds a collapsed stroller.
I find AK very tiring to push a wheelchair along. It has many hills, and of course the uneven pavement is hard to push on. It must be very difficult for the person riding in the chair, especially if they have arthritis or some other pain issue. The bumps would jar the rider.

Hi again-

I'm back with another probably dumb question for my edification and your entertainment. My MIL can transfer from her wheelchair (and pobably would prefer to do it that way) to any of the rides at WDW. Standing in the lines would not be a big problem. The question is : Do you leave wheelchairs in the stroller area and is that safe? I've read that WDW doesn't like wheelchairs secured or locked in case they need to move them. Might others walk off with yor chair thinking it was theirs? (Oops - that's 2 questions).

Regards,

Have your MIL stay in her chair in the lines and the CM will move it to a "safe" place while she is on the ride.

There are not that many rides that have cars that wheelchairs can be loaded into, so she would be transferring out of the wheelchair for many things in any case.
I agree with Michigan that she is best off staying in the wheelchair for the wait in line. Most lines are wheelchair accessible. Some (like Pirates, the Safari at AK and Bug's Life at AK), are deceptively long distances. For other rides that have moving walkways for boarding and getting off, it might be safer for her to use the accessible boarding area - that way the CMs can slow or stop the moving walkway for her to get on and off.

If she wants to park the wheelchair and walk in line, she can park with the strollers. She can lock the wheelchair with a bike lock, but it needs to be moveable if CMs need to move it to keep the area tidy or to keep a fire/access lane. So you can't lock it to anything or in a way that totally prevents it from being moved.
The rental wheelchairs are most likely to be taken. They all look alike, so it's very possible for someone to take hers without realizing it if they are not careful. If it's her own wheelchair, do something to it to make it look distinctive. One thing people have done with strollers is to tie a bunch of milar ribbon (that hard to tear, shiny metalic ribbon) to the push handles. Someone who is taking it by mistake is likely to see that since it will hit their hands while they are driving.
