Coldest Marathon mornings?

Hi!!!

As I freeze in Michigan tonight :-D I am wondering what has been the coldest morning starts for the Marathon? In 2004 we were there vacationing and we remember it be very very cold.

This year it was a beautiful morning for race day and I would love that again for 2006 but I want to be prepared and see what others have experienced in the past years. Are we talking 40's? Or colder?

Just wondering :)

Given the past 2 years, I think the weather could be about anything. It was terrible for 2004. Cold Cold Cold, but it could have been rainy too I guess. I never even took my gloves off the whole race. Then in 2005 I was one of only a few people that ran in tights as opposed to shorts. It was great for the half, but keep in mind I am a FL raised girl living in CO that misses the heat and huimidity. I think the Full-ers had a harder time as it got alot warmer as the day went on. They said it was the warmest start (in 2005) in the history of the race. I would just plan on preparing for everything and hopefully 2006 will split the difference of the past 2 years.

thanks Jen! I had packed gloves (2003 was cool and 2004 was COLD!) given our 2 previous January trips. I recently read somewhere they suggest mittens for running. So I have to remember to look for some come fall since I've stocked up on those shrinking ones.

I wore pants (exercise) and was very comfy for what we did in the 1/2. I'm more concerned with the time before the start as I stand around freezing. but I was surprised with how fast that time did fly and before I knew it they were counting down.

Thanks again!!! Having dinner with the girls last night and talking about our 2006 plans has me all excited again and thoughts running thru my head as to what to do better including staying warm if the need be ;)

Have a Magical Day!!!!

I don't really know about the cold weather on marathon morning but I can tell you that the heat and full sun for the full marathon this year really made things difficult for me. I ran in shorts and a tank top and I was so hot. I'm a Houston girl and I'm used to (and love) heat and humidity but I was so miserable and hot from mile 16 on.
I just think that the bulk of the long training runs/walks are done in cool/cold weather and by the time marathon morning rolls around that's what you're used to.
If it had been cold I was going to wear tights and a long sleeved shirt with a warm up to throw to the side.

Thanks Pixidust27. I'll hope for some cooler temps then for 2006. I guess being a bit miserible before would be preferrable to feeling like I was melting during. That and I hope there is no rain. When I was able to get out on Sunday there were huge puddles in my subdivision that I ran thru and EWWWW!!! That is just gross! My wet shoes, my soaked socks!! ICK! I think I'll take the cold as long as it's dry :-D

I totally agree that rain would be awful. I guess it would keep you cool if it was warm . . . but running in squishy shoes is zero fun. And if it's cold and rainy, double yuck!

This year tanked on temp--it was beautiful to start..but it was hot for a long run.

I believe they've gotten down to the 20s on race morning :(

20s?!?!? YIKES!!! That would be nasty. But thanks, somehow I never think of the 20s and Florida in the same thought so I'll be sure to keep that in mind that it has gotten that low. brrr. I was talking to my manager outside going to my car today and froze, it's currently 27 outside. So hat, gloves, ear-covering will be a must if it's looking that way for the morning of.

I guess that is why the Penguin says to bring it all as far as clothing! I kinda decided the night before, and was still hot even on the 1/2 can't even imagine continuing onward that day for the full. I heat up way too fast.
