Coki Beach or Trunk Bay?

I know Coki Beach is next to Coral World and thought about spending the day at Coki Beach and going to Coral World if the kids want the aquarium experience but I've heard a lot of excellent reviews about Trunk Bay at St. John. Which one would you do? I'm looking for a nice beach for the kids (11 and 8) to spend the day, with some shopping in the afternoon. Would I still have time to do the tram ride before heading back to board?

Recommendations?

If you want to do some shopping and possibly ride up the tram, I would suggest staying on St. Thomas. While St. John and Trunk Bay are really nice, Coki Beach also makes a great beach day. Going to and from St. John requires the ferry, which adds to the time it takes. It's probably about 20 minutes to the ferry from the cruise ship pier, another 25 minutes for the ferry, and then another 15 or so to the beach once you're on St. John. This assumes you don't have to wait for the next ferry. When I go to St. John, I usually plan on spending most of the day there. For a half-day at the beach and half-day shopping, it's easier to stay on St. Thomas. The trip to Coki Beach is about as far as the trip to the ferry.

Trunk bay is one of the "ten most beautiful beaches in the world" I remember reading it on some travel site before we went there. And it really was!! Where we went it was almost deserted, reminded me a lot of gilligans island. No beach chairs etc. It was breathtakingly pristine and the snorkling fantastic. I plan on going again in December and can't think of a more memorable beach. (except stingray city in grand cayman but that is on the western) I have never been to Coki beach but can HIGHLY recommend trunk bay. An added plus is the high salt content in the water-it makes you super boyant and no vests are needed for snorkling (although DS still wore one)

I haven't actually done the 7 day (yet :D ) but I have been to St Thomas and St. John. Trunk bay and St. John as a whole is BEAUTIFUL. St John is more "natural" and less built up (if you can call any of the Virgin Islands built up.) In my limited traveling, it has been one of the prettiest places I have every been, and the snorkelling is wonderful there.

But I am not sure how it fits into your plans or the timing with getting to and from port.. but you definitely wouldn't be disapointed with Trunk Bay and St. John. If I was on the Eastern, I'd probably head over to St. John. I'm not a big shopper, and I was never that impressed with the shopping in St. Thomas anyway.

Back last April we did some Snorkling out at Coki Beach. We had heard Sapphire Beach is nice. The locals recommend going there.

Water clarity was pretty good at Coki. There was a rock pile running out from the right, at the far end of the beach. The fish were congregated around that rock pile. BE CAREFULL IF THE WIND IS UP AROUND THE ROCKS. We always snorkle with our own gear to include good life vests.

Actually one of the dive people at Coki Beach carry dry dogfood and throw it around. This brings the fish closer to the beach.

If you swam out to the end of the rockpile you could see Coral World a stones throw away.

We leave tomorrow 2/22/03 to do the Eastern again. This time we are doing Trunk Bay at St. Johns. Everybody we have talked to said, you have to do Trunk Bay (Snorkling).

Hope this helps

When I vacationed in St Thomas we went to Coral WOrld and then Coki Beach....we rented snorkel gear from Coral World and used it at Coki Beach and the snorkling there was awesome!

I've been to both and I LOVE TRUNK BAY! Snorkeling may be alittle better at Coki but Trunk is a really beautiful beach. The taxi ride there has fantastic views. You take a ferry from St. Thomas which is very convenient and cheap. It is a great adventure for kids your age. I've done it several times with my children.

I took my teen DD's to Coral World and then when we finished our lunch there, we headed next door to Coki Beach. The beach is beautiful and convenient for a family to enjoy. We rented beach loungers and sampled a fruity beverage the waitstaff brought over for us to try.

We used the showers and facilities at Coral World, and grabbed a taxi back to the ship right there. If you are interested, there were also hair braiders available on the beach, but I would recommend bringing your own combs to use if you decide to do so.
