We want to bring M&M tubes full of quarters and pennies to WDW for doing pressed pennies. Can we put them in our carry-on bags? Will we get grief from security if we do? :confused3

You wont get grief, but they may look at it as you can imagine a long tube that will look like metal from the xray would tend to draw attention :)

Before the xmas thing, I read a couple of stories here where the agents looked at it and actually laughed when they saw what it was.

Define "grief", please, if you don't mind. Will they inspect your luggage more thoroughly than other luggage (where they can tell what everything is)? Maybe. On the other hand, so what? You want your cash to arrive at your destination, correct? Carry-on luggage should contain:
Travel documents
Medication
Valuables (electronics, jewelry, cash...)
Whatever items one will need for the first 24 hours at the destination

Thanks everybody! I don't mind them searching my hand luggage. I just wanted to know if it was more likely if I brought the coins through. :goodvibes

They may search through the bag. I had a ziploc bag of change in my carry-on for one trip home from Disney. It appears on the x-ray as a solid mass so they inspected the bag. Its not really a big deal if they inspect the bag. If they ask about it just tell them you are carrying change and they may or may not inspect it.

Should be fine. They can see through the scanners what it is.

No, they can't! How do I know this??? I completely forgot I had a roll of quarters in my carryon. That bag went back and forth, through the scanner about 4 times. Finally, they pulled it aside and emptied the whole thing!!! They asked me if I had anything metal in there....like I said, I forgot I had the quarters. And of course, the darn thing had fallen all the way to the bottom of the bag and got stuck in a fold! Embarrassed much??

I also had a bag full of my ds's coin collection. That pretty much through security into a frenzy. I was told to step away from the bag, they would take care of it!! AGain, emptied the whole thing out. I tried telling them what it was, but they didn't believe me.

If you carry something like that, be sure it is readily accessible. that way you can just pull it out if questioned.

Yes they do catch attention. I had two M&M containers - one for pennies and one for quarters - in my bag in Aug. and didn't think a thing of it when suddenly I hear the guy running the x-ray machine call for assistance as I was passing through the metal detector. They kept scanning and looking - as the previous poster mentioned and then finally it dawned on me what was causing it and I quickly and quietly explained. They let it go right through without even opening the bag then. But yes, it probably will get noticed!

I would pull it out and put it in the bin. That way they don't have to search through your carry on.

Thanks, Safetymom! I think that might be the best way to go to avoid trouble. You should have seen the commotion when I took my flute in my carry-on! They made me take it out, put it together and play it! :lmao: :rotfl2:

What good timing this question is. I am going to Vegas with all of my sisters next week and being the "frugal" (OK, cheap :rotfl2:) Accountant that I am, I have rolls of quarters, dimes and nickels in my carry on for the slot machines :lmao:. Glad to know that it won't cause a problem. I think I'll put them all in a ziploc and take them out of the bag to prevent any "issues".

We always pull them out and put them though the bin with my zip bag of liquids. The first year i didn't and they did pull us out and hand search.

We have had our carry on pulled out for manual search due to a roll of quarters. It was in the front pocket and they started to search and dig through the inside contents until I told them what they were looking for was in the front pocket. The guy felt in there, never pulled them out and then sent us on our way.

Other times we have gone through with no extra check with rolls of quarters (need those quarters for the toll roads).

Better to lose a little time with the extra check than to lose them from your checked baggage.

Um, okayyyy... but, uh, you know they have coins in Las Vegas, right? I mean, it's a real city with electricity and banks and restaurants and everything :umbrella::teeth:

VERY seriously though - most machines don't even have coin slots any more. They accept bills and disburse tickets showing your winnings (or, for the more realistic, remaining money). You can then cash in the tickets at machines throughout the casino, or at the Cashier's Cage.

Even there, they only accept two denominations of coins. If you have time, I can find out which two - I think it's quarters & nickels and they won't even accept pennies & dimes.

Really, your best move would be to change the money into bills at home. It'll be easier (lighter) to carry, too!

This is one reason we don't like playing slots any more. No more coins, fake clanging sounds = No fun for us. I don't want a ticket, I want to haul around a bucket of dirty coins.
