Coin Counting

I am so frustrated. We keep a big jar in our kitchen and whenever we have loose change we put it in there. Then when we go on vacation DD gets to turn it all in and use it for spending money. We counted it the other night and there's over $150 in change in there.

When we went in 2007 I called my bank and the main branch downtown had a coin counter so I just took the money in and left with cash for her. So I just called today to check on it and they don't have it anymore. You can only bring the change in rolled now. I've rolled change before and it's a huge pain.

So we leave in a few days and I have all that change to roll. I know I could go use one of those coinstar machines but they charge like 8 cents for every dollar or something now right? That's $12. I just hate to give the money up. I don't know, I'll probably end up doing that though because I just don't have the time or patience at this point to roll it all.

I'm just frustrated. Banks used to do these little things for you and now more and more of the services you used to get for being a customer are dropping off and the fees are going up.

You could try a credit union in your area. Mine has coin counting machines available for members and it only takes $5 in a savings account to join. A lot cheaper than the machine in the supermarket.

I just asked around work and one of the other ladies is a member at a credit union that has one. So she said she would take it for me tomorrow.

I know it sounds so cheap when we're forking out the money for Disney, but it just feels like throwing money away in the coinstar machine.

i hate that with coinstar they charge you for cash but if you do a gift card thing, its free! How are we supposed to use an amazon gift card at disney? My bank takes the change rolled up. its a pain in the butt, but my son loves to help me do it. he thinks its fun. so while he counts the money, i put it in the rolls! that way he is learning about money.

Personally I can't imagine bringing $150 worth of loose change into the bank and expect them to count it. I think it's a good project for your DD since it'll be her spending money.

Yeah, I used to work at a bank as the head teller there, and we simply do not have the time to roll $150 worth in coins... a smaller amount we would be happy to help roll! One time, a lady brought in a shoebox full of rolled quarters, but all the rolls were different sizes!! Some were obviously short, some too full... she said she let her students count them all by themselves.... she taught kindergarten! Needless to say... we had to re-roll all of those

Anyways, my dd has a big jar full as well, and we are just going to either roll them together carefully or use one of those the coin things that charge if we are in a hurry!

Our credit union has never had a coin counter. :/ We've always had to roll it or take it elsewhere. The first time we ever turned our coin into cash I was able to take it with me to where I was working for the summer as we had a coin counter. My boss was cool with it and it didn't cost us anything.

This year, DH and I had like $70 in change that we ran through a coinstar (rolling would have left us with like $15 worth of change unrolled because we'd of been short coins) and ended up with like $61. But, that money is going toward paying our baggage fee and our airport parking fees when we get home. My mom and dad on the other hand rolled all their change...as that's what they're taking for spending money. The finished rolling it the other night and have like $700+ to take for spending (once they go get travellers cheques).

If you have BB&T where you are, their branches have coin counters in the lobby. You do not need to have an account there.

I live in New Jersey, and go to Commerce Bank now renamed to TD Bank. They have a machine that does it for free. It doesnt take any percentage out your change, and you do not need to have an account with them.

Perhaps you have one of these banks? or a similar bank that offers a service with no charge?

Well, in my opinion my loose change is money just the same as dollar bills would be. If I let my DD who is five try to roll the coins then as another poster said all the rolls would be different sizes and they would have to redo them anyway. She's only five.

Personally I'm surprised that a bank would take over a $150 worth of rolled coins and not count them. I wouldn't cheat the bank, but I'm sure there are plenty of people that would.

Most banks around here used to have coin counters for the customers. Some would even do it for non customers. But smaller banks are being taken over by bigger banks and some of the things they used to offer are being cut. So my coworker banks at a local credit union and will take my coins in and have them counted and bring me back the cash.

With large amounts of rolled coins brought in by a customer, we would sell it to the vault and bag all the coins to be sent off to the fed. The branch would then take the difference or overage instead of the teller. We only used fed rolled coins since you are right... customer rolls are often off and some people do shady things.

I'm so glad you found some place with a coin counter though...those things are awesome and I often wished we had one! Now I need to find one...

Certainly can't hurt to call a few branches and see.

I know that here, Frist Banks had them at one point. Not sure if they do anymore.

Dawn, BofA is what we use. We had one branch that had one in 2007 but when I called she said they quit doing it about a year and a half ago. So I guess it was not long after I used it. I asked around at my work and found someone that uses a local credit union and they have one. She's kind enough to take them in for me. Good luck!

We always do the same thing and roll our change and when we went to get rollers this time our bank requested we bring it in loose so they could run it through their counter and deposit it in our account. It sure made it easier for us.

We had about $500 in loose change.

DH & I rolled it one night while the kids were sleeping. It only took us a few hours.

We ended up with the change plus all the $20's we thru in totalling around $1200 which was our spending money for the week.

I have just under 4 years to get that ball rolling again as I think there is only about $20 in it now.
