Cogito Ergo Nom: A DxDP Review - Dec. 7-14, 2008 - Continuing after all this time...

Great review so far can't wait to read the rest.

Welcome and thanks for the compliment! I hope to include tons more good stuff.

Signing on.....popcorn::

Count me in!

Welcome! Glad y'all stopped by!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So sorry I've been MIA. I've had a migraine since last Friday morning and it has just gotten progressively worse until I had to break down and get a shot from my doctor. It's still not completely gone but is getting better at least.
Coming up next: A 2005 review of O'hana with pics of the only things that really matters . . . the cocktail! :teeth:
We chose O’hana for dinner because the menu sounded tasty and I love the movie, “Lilo & Stitch” even though I knew there were no characters at dinner. Actually, if I’m being honest, we chose it because Roger’s eyes lit up when I told him about the grill and the mondo skewars o’meat. We booked a late meal here on a mostly non-park day.
After a really lovely day of non-park distractions, we arrived at the Poly around 8:45pm as we wanted to stroll around the grounds a bit. I had read a bit about the Electric Water Pageant and wanted to try to catch it. We made our way down to the beach where we found a swing with an amazing view of Holiday Wishes and the Water Pageant. It is still one of my favorite moments from that trip. :cloud9:
It was incredibly cold on the beach so we headed in right after the parade finished to check in for our 9:30pm ADR. Fortunately, there was a table available so we were seated immediately at a small table overlooking the marina. Now, this spot had a great view of the fire pit and was in the main dining room so would have been a great table during the day. As it was, it was so dark that we could barely see the tabletop. This is the primary reason why there is only one photo of this meal. The other reason is I forgot to take them as the evening wore on because of the item in the photo.
OhanaDrink.jpg
This fabulous concoction is a Lapu Lapu and yes, that is a real (and very prickly) pineapple. This drink can only be described as yummy, intoxicating deliciousness. I really didn’t care that I was cold or that our table was dark by the time I finished. I HIGHLY recommend this if you like rum.
As I’m sure most everyone knows, food at O’hana is served family-style, which means big bowls of stuff. Our server or “Cousin” as you are instructed to call them, delivered our appetizers of wonton chips and peel-n-eat shrimp with my tasty drink. The chips were super light and crispy without that nasty oil slick texture you sometimes get with them. We loved them with the sweet-n-sour sauce. The shrimp were served shell and tail on and were basted in a fabulously tasty sauce that had just a hint of spice. I loved these things and devoured half of the bowl myself. Roger prefers not to have to work for his food so didn’t eat quite as many but he did think they tasted good. He seems to recall that there might have been some chicken wings delivered as appetizers as well but neither of us eat them so we can’t quite remember.
We were just finishing up the shrimp and chips when our server arrived with a bowl of scalloped potatoes and some stir-fried veggies. Right behind came Roger’s favorite person of the night – the meat man. He came bearing beef and pork skewers which he slid off onto our plates. Since we were the only table on that side of the restaurant, he brought back a skewer of turkey a second later before taking it around to the rest of the room.
Honestly, I can give or take meat at the best of times so I felt very “enh” about the meat. The beef wasn’t quite done enough for my tastes (Yes, please, I WOULD like that burned, thanks) and I thought the pork looked pink in the center. I enjoyed the turkey and ate a few more pieces of that but finally just ended up getting more yummy shrimp. On the other hand, Roger LOVED the meat. He devoured his beef AND mine, scarfed down the pork and asked for seconds (and thirds if the truth be known.) He didn’t love the turkey so I ended up eating most of his.
We both liked the stir-fried veggies and thought they were well-prepared – crisp tender and not soggy. Even so, we barely ate two whole spoonfuls. A MUCH bigger hit were the potatoes. These things were HEAVENLY! They weren’t overly mushy and had a wonderful cheesy flavor without being overwhelmingly greasy. Roger doesn’t much care for scalloped potatoes (goes back to his mom “hiding” things in them) and he liked these. I, on the other hand, LOVED them. I think I polished off the plate of them.
By now, we were both completely stuffed. We had decided we wanted to head over to MK for EMH so were completely ready to go. Our “Cousin” had been pretty much MIA during most of our meal which didn’t bother us as we had everything we needed. It was annoying now however because it was almost 10:30pm and we wanted to go. We finally flagged down another table’s “Cousin” who sent ours out. He came bearing some sort of dessert concoction that neither of us touched because we were too full. We asked for our check, he returned with it pretty quickly, we settled up and left.
Final Thoughts: The food here was average to good with some things being very good (shrimp and potatoes.) The service was decidedly lackluster. I think this would be a fun meal for a larger group but it falls a little flat with just two. Also, I felt guilty for wasting so much food so I’m not sure if we would return just because of that issue. I can definitely say that I have no desire to go back now that my two favorite items are no longer on the menu. I might be tempted just for that Lapu Lapu but I can get that in the Tambu Lounge so I’m all good. All in all, we’re happy we tried it BEFORE the menu change but we wouldn’t go back any time soon.
Appetizers: Wonton chips (good) and shrimp (very good – yum!)
Entrée: Meat (Enh for me but very good for DH so good overall), potatoes (amazing) and veggies (good)
Dessert: Can’t rate because we didn’t eat it.
Service: Slow and not overly friendly.
There was one World Showcase restaurant we decided we needed to repeat on our upcoming trip and that was Le Cellier. Roger loves meat and I loved the ambiance of this location so this was an easy decision for us.
We chose to dine at Le Cellier in 2005 by pure luck of the draw. We decided to attend the CP at Epcot our first night and wanted a mid-tier restaurant to dine at that evening. Back in 2005, Le Cellier was listed as a mid-tier and it was the most interesting to Roger so we booked an ADR here for 8:45pm, hoping to miss the bulk of the kidlets who, we assumed, would be out oogling the pretty lights of Illuminations.
We arrived at 8:30pm, completely exhausted after our first full day at the World. There were several parties waiting and our hostess let us know it would be at least 20 to 30 minutes before they could seat the two of us. We wanted to hang out in the mini-Victoria Gardens but it was cold and we were too tired so we kind of just collapsed on a bench in the waiting area and tried not to fall asleep.
We were finally seated at 9:05pm, at a two-top in the very back corner of the restaurant opposite the entrance. Our server (who's name has completely escaped me) took our drink order and let us know it was his last night working at Disney. He was quite personable and spent some time sharing info about his home province and chatting with us about the menu. He did mention that he was excited about the party his fellow CMs were throwing in his honor that night but that he was sad to be going. Overall, he provided good, if distracted, service thoughout the course of our meal. I'm sure this was due to the evening's impending festivities and his bittersweet feelings about it being his last night.
Back in 2005, you could not use your dining plan to pay for your CP Package so this meal was OOP. As such, we were allowed to order anything off of the menu and were entitled to an app, entree and dessert each.
Roger chose a bowl of the oh so heavenly Cheddar Cheese Soup.
(Sorry - no pic)
The texture was velvety smooth and wonderfully cheesy with a lovely bite from the Moosehead beer. It was exceptional when eaten on a piece of lovely pretzel breadstick (why do they bother with the other two? The pretzel is amazing!!!!) We both enjoyed it so much that I asked for the recipe and have made it at home - sadly without the Moosehead, but good nonetheless.
I selected the Shrimp Cocktail with Wasabi Slaw and was delighted to be served this:
ShrimpCocktail-LeCellier.jpg
My favorite part about this dish was the presentation because, sadly, the shrimp were only so-so. The sauce had a bit of bite to it but was more sweet that spicy and the wasabi slaw was barely spicy at all. I was disappointed in the flavors but still enjoyed the dish due to the overall cuteness factor. Roger thought the whole dish was "enh". Please note that Le Cellier still serves a shrimp cocktail but it is not this one. I'm not sure if the other has better flavor
Honestly, I can't quite remember what Roger ordered for his entree. I can only tell you that it was beefy and he seemed very happy with it. I'm inclined to think that it was prime rib because I didn't try a bite and I won't eat that.
I selected the mushroom filet served over a bed of mushroom risotto.
(Sorry - no pic)
Roger and I both loved this. The filet melted like butter on your tongue and the risotto had a wonderful earthiness to it while still being creamy and rich. I loved the risotto so much that I asked for the recipe and have since made it at home. I adored this dish and can't wait to try it again.
By the time we were halfway done with our entrees, we noticed there were just a handful of tables left in the restaurant. At this point, one of the other servers approached us and asked if we would mind if all of the staff sang "O Canada" for our server. We, of course, did not mind so the few of us were treated to a beautifully stirring rendition of the Canadian national anthem. It really was quite touching and our server had tears in his eyes when his co-workers finished. DH and I were most impressed that all of the servers knew all of the words to a somewhat difficult song, quite unlike many US kids of the same age with our own national anthem. :sad2:
As we were finishing our entrees (and I was trying to refrain from licking the bowl clean of my risotto), our server took our dessert order. Roger, as usual, selected the creme brulee option which was maple flavored.
(Sorry - no pic)
I don't like maple syrup on my pancakes so this poor little creme brulee never stood a chance with me. Roger liked it well enough but we both felt the Pistachio offering at Jiko overshadowed this.
I selected an item from the Kid's dessert menu - Campfire S'mores:
CampfireSmores-LeCellier.jpg
These were SO FUN!!! I :love: sprinkles so was infinitely happy with all the ones here. I will admit that this was difficult to eat as the bottom ice cream/chocolate/graham cracker crust was frozen and practically impossible to break through. DH and I tried valiently, however and eventually managed to finish about half of the dessert. While the flavors were good, I most enjoyed this dessert because it was fun and whimsical.
It was really late by this time (almost 10:30pm) and we badly wanted to get back to our hotel and get some sleep. We were the next to last table to finish and almost all of the servers had all but disappeared by this point so it took a few minutes for someone to realize we were done, flag down our server and for him to bring our check. As the meal was pre-paid, including 18% gratuity, we only had to thank our server, wish him the best of luck and stagger back to our hotel for some much needed rest.
Final Thoughts: We really enjoyed our meal here. The ambiance was lovely and it was wonderfully quiet here when we were dining. I would imagine the room could get exceedingly loud when full though as the architecture wasn't conducive for sound dampening. There were a couple of real stars in terms of food (soup and risotto), some really good choices (my filet) and some things that looked pretty but didn't taste fab (shrimp cocktail, s'mores). Service was average but probably would have been better if our server hadn't had other distractions. All in all, this was a nice meal that we would repeat again given the choice.
Ratings:
Appetizers - Soup (incredible!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2), Shrimp Cocktail (disappointing but :thumbsup2 for presentation)
Entrees - DH's (??), Mushroom filet (risotto was amazingly good)
Dessert - creme brulee (ok), s'mores (fun but average in taste)
Service - Friendly but distracted at times
Shauna,
Looking forward to all of your reviews. You'll be there some of the same days I'll be there. It's getting so close, I just can't wait. :goodvibes
Are you getting a diver/personalized menu at the Coral Reef for your wedding anniversary? I'm having a personalized menu at our lunch there for my DD21 and my, girls only trip.
I love that you reposted pics from earlier trips. Everything looks so good. Those scallops from Jiko look absolutely amazing. :)
Note to self:
Must have lapu lapu next year at any cost, even if it means a special trip to the Polynesian just for the pleasure of drinking booze from a fruit that I don't like.
That is all.
:rotfl2:
BTW, sorry to read about your migraine. I've dealt with those off and on over the years (stupid hormones) and I sure hope you're feeling better now. :hug:
I agree! DH likes pineapple and I like the booze and it's been years since we've consumed one!:thumbsup2
I like pineapple. I like booze. I like them together. And back in 2005, they were two....two....two drinks in one! They gave me the pineapple and then an extra glass full of booze to dump into the pineapple once I sucked down the first part. I hadn't gotten a Lapu Lapu since then, but I wonder if they don't give you so much this time around.
I was wondering why we went into a Time Warp (just a jump....to the left), but it was cool to read about her history of Disney Dining. (And obsolete menu items like the scalloped potatoes at 'Ohana!)
We ARE getting super close. I can't wait!!!
I requested a personalized menu for our lunch but chose not to do the diver as DH gets easily embarrassed. Debbi offered but I just felt like he would be too self-concious to enjoy it. I hope your DD loves the menu!
And yes, the Jiko scallops were incredible. I swear I can still taste them.
You really must make that trip. Drinking from the pineapple was a novel experience but I would be just as happy with a normal cup. After all, I'm in it for the rum!
Thanks for the well wishes on the migraine. I'm especially susceptible to changes in barometric pressure and it's that time here in Cali. Still, my little headaches are nothing compared to all you are going through. :hug: to you!
Ooooo, I'm jealous that you got an extra glass of rummy-goodness to refill your prickly fruit.
Thanks for sticking that song in my head now. I've been time warping around the office this morning. Fortunately, no one is here this week so there have been no witnesses. :laughing:
The brief trip through dining history is just a means to help me pass the time until I have current reviews to post. Plus, I love revisiting tasty things. I just wish I got to eat them a second time.
We're BACK!!!! And we had a simply fantastic time. I keep telling DH that it felt like we had our own private little fairy following us around sprinkling pixie dust over our heads since everything went so fabulously well throughout the entire trip.
I'm happy to say that we loved the DxDP and are now thinking it is the way to go for all future trips. We used every single one of our 42 meal credits as well as all 28 of our snack credits. Many fabulous meals were had and many tasty cocktails and glasses of wine were consumed. All in all, it was a wonderful time.
We did keep all of our reservations except for the one at Boma which we ended up switching out for Artist Point since we had 2 extra credits to use. Photos were taken of every item we consumed and we only forgot to take them before we started eating once. I filled my little notebook with pages and pages of notes and was asked several times if I was a food critic or in the "food biz." Each time, I simply replied that I was a scrapbooker and I liked to be thorough as I really didn't want to go into detail regarding the DISboards food reviews.
I hope to begin reviews tomorrow but won't be able to start until I begin uploading the 1,200+ photos we took on the trip. I hope you will all enjoy the reviews as much as we enjoyed the meals that prompted them.
And away we go!
I can't wait to read all of your great reviews...I've enjoyed the flashback reviews and really am looking forward to this year's trip!
I am eagerly awaiting such a yummy happy food report from you! :goodvibes
:welcome: Ciciwoowoo and trixiequilts! Thanks for popping back in, jenjolt! I'm happy to have y'all and I hope my reviews won't disappoint.
I do have to apologize, though. I was planning to post my first review today but Photobucket pooped out in the middle of my upload so none of my pics made it online. I promise I will be back this weekend to get at least the first, if not the first two, reviews posted.
Thanks for sticking around with me!
Can't wait to read your reviews. Your dog is super cute BTW.
Sadly, my first DxDP review is for a Counter Service meal. Our first day touring plan had us arriving at AK just in time for a quick lunch before jetting off to Finding Nemo. Flame Tree didn’t appeal to us so we headed straight for
Pizzafari
We arrived around noon. All registers were open and the lines were pretty short and seemed to be moving pretty quickly. We both ordered the same thing and I handed the KTTW card to the cashier. He ran it through and then asked me in a frustrated voice if we had Deluxe Dining. I said yes and he said that I needed to tell them before they ran the card. While I appreciated the info, I completely could have done without the snotty teen angst whine in which it was delivered.
DH & Me
Hot Italian Style Sandwich and Lays Potato Chips - Turkey, ham, Swiss and Provolone Cheese topped with Caesar salad and pesto marinated tomatoes - $7.49
100_0216.jpg
100_0217.jpg
Shauna: The sandwich had good overall flavor. You could really taste the turkey and ham but the cheese got completely lost which wasn’t surprising considering that it was swiss and provolone. The lettuce was a nice, crunchy romaine and the dressing wasn’t overwhelming. The tomatoes were a soggy, disgusting mess so I just scraped them off. The bread was good and had a nicely crisp crust but I felt the focaccia was a tad too thick to be on a sandwich.
Roger: The sandwich is good but there were a lot of stems in the lettuce. I have one word for the pesto tomatoes – Ewwww!
Shauna and Roger: Chips are chips. We didn’t eat them and were planning to take them with us but forgot and threw them away.
Me
Apple Blossom - $3.59
100_0222.jpg
Shauna: It was served at room temperature and wasn’t very good. The crust was kind of sour and I thought it might have had sour cream in it. The filling was very mushy and tart.
Roger: It’s wasn't very good. It tasted like one of the 4 for $1 pies you get at the grocery store.
We both thought it would taste better warm.
DH
Chocolate Cake - $3.59
100_0225.jpg
Roger: It’s OK.
Shauna: It looks a lot better than it tastes. The curl decoration tasted like plastic or that fake faux chocolate you will sometimes come across. The cake was only OK – not dry and not moist – just there. The icing was the best part. It was thick and tasty but extremely sweet. A couple of bites were more than enough to make you wish for a large glass of ice cold milk.
DH & Me
Cokes - $2.09 each
Tally:
Sandwiches and chips – $14.98
Desserts - $7.18
Drinks - $4.18
Tax - $1.71
Total - $28.05 if cash
2 credits on DxDP
Décor and seating options: There were lots of smaller rooms with tons of tables so you could choose where to sit and might be able to limit the noise factor accordingly. Each room is themed to a continent and the wall murals are painted accordingly. The décor is very bright and cheerful. We sat in the Asia room which is one of the largest and it was extremely noisy. I regretted this decision immensely as the meal wore on and groups began trolling for tables with hungry, cranky kids in tow.
100_0227.jpg
Even the restrooms had cute tiles and were fairly clean!
Final Thoughts: The food was pretty good for Counter Service. Portions were huge and we could have easily split one sandwich. Décor was imaginative and entertaining. Service was quick even though it wasn’t very friendly. We would definitely consider returning if we were looking for a CS place.
