Codes For Decmeber for Family effected by Katrina

Dear friends,
This my first post. Our house was ground Zero for Katrina and we are the one oif the few lucky ones to still have a house.

Why is this thread on the Katrina Board? You would probably have more success with codes on the Resort board?

There are thousands who still have a home, but their homes have 6 inches of muddy muck and mold in their homes. I work with a person who now lives with her daughter-3 hours from her home & both her home , a vehicle and their small "Mom and Pop" buisness is ruined. The last thing on her mind is a trip to Florida, that's for sure.

Handymom and Zurealsoon - Shame on both of you. My home has to be bulldozed and what little of my life's possessions I saved are drying in the driveway of my new place. My trip to WDW in December is something I am really looking forward to. You have no clue what people's financial positions are and how they are making trips happen and what they "need". Don't assume anything, you know what happens when you assume. Tsk, Tsk.

That's the difference. Millions of us, thousands on this board alone contributed every dime we had to the Red Cross etc because we care about you and those that lost everything. Many affected are people of means and of course they can still afford to go to Disney World. They are the luckier ones. Millions of people who never saw a hurricane can't afford to go to Disney either. That's what they meant, I don't think they were assuming anything.

Thnks to everyone who replied. I assure you I am not a scam. just someone trying to give his kids tha same Xmas present they have had for the last 6 years.

We live in Pearl River, LA at Cedar and HWY 1090(Military Road) So, for you locals, you can see where we live.

I would call and ask if they have any special discounts - I know that they did offer special room rates in Sept for those affected by Hurricane Katrina but they did not advertise it. So call reservations and ask about any special rates. I also live in one of the areas affected and it really does do good to get a way. People who do not live here just can not understand how it is to look around and see so much destruction day in and day out. It is like living in a war zone. And the areas that are in fair shape are so over crowded right now. Everything in the area, grocery stores, drug stores and restaurants are CRAZY busy!! Everyone's patience is beginning to wear thin so I say Go and enjoy!!

Have you thought about staying off-site? I know it's better to stay on site but when $$'s tight you do what ya gotta do. We're going in Dec. but staying off site this time due to finances. If you do consider staying off-site don't forget to factor in the price of parking into an off-site room rate.
I guess you may be staying at WL due to the number of people in your room? If you are not over the maximum of 4, then consider staying at an AllStar. That's better than no vacation at all!! I would recommend Pop or ASSports so you don't have lines at the busses.

When I called last month they were giving breaks on accomadations but not on tickets. This was also right after Katrina and for those displaced. We bough annual passes with the money we had saved for our Mardi Gras Trip (ended up being 3000 cheaper too). It's been a rough two months , we lost everything b/c of the 17th street canal breaking, we lived on Bellaire right on the canal. The best place I've been in the last 2 months is Disney - kinda takes your mind off all the stress and stuff we've been dealing with.

The best place I've been in the last 2 months is Disney - kinda takes your mind off all the stress and stuff we've been dealing with.

Cara, I'm so sorry. I was on Harrison and I lost everything too. Are you going to rebuild? I know what you mean about Disney taking your mind off of stuff.

We were renting and so I have no clue what our landlord is going to do. The house is not strucually safe, it looks from the pictures I have seen that it's shifted a tad off it's foundation and the house next door to us is in our house. We didn't have renters, we were just getting to a point finacally that we could afford the extra bill each month and where about to get it. Found out my landlord didn't have flood, just canceled it b/c it never flooded there. I read last week that they are saying that they may not let people rebuild on the levees b/c they need the space to reenforce them so they will be stronger so they are talking about buying out those houses. Who knows? I also heard that the levee there is still seeping and the water is going into the street. There is a yahoo group just for lakeview residents, if you want I can PM you with the info.

Oh that's just terrible. have you gone through the FEMA process?

I have been visiting the lakeview site, it's been great.

We would love to rebuild. We are in mandeville for now, my husband's job was transferred to Gulfport so commuting is now an issue. I'd actually like to buy a house Uptown and we had been talking about doing that for a while so this might be the time.

Have fun at WDW, that's where we evacuated to using our DVC points which really came in handy since we stayed for 3 1/2 weeks!

Handymom and Zurealsoon and LakeAriel, Shame on all of you. If you have not lived it, you shouldn't be knocking someone who is trying to bring some normalsie back for her kids. You realy don't know the problems that this has done to peoples lives. I live in Belle Chasse, my house had some wind damage, but it is liveable. We have another family living with us. When Hurricane Katrena hit we were on The Disney Magic for a once of a lifetime trip thru the Panama Canal. We got back to Port Canaveral on Sept. 3. The real hell started the min we went to pick up the car that we had rented so we could spend 1 more day with Disney. Since we bank with a bank only in New Orleans, we had no money even thou we had 18 days of direct deposets in my bank. Our cell phones wouldn't work, and we were lucky that we were able to get a family member pick us up at the Baton Rouge airport. After we were in Hammond, we were locked out of our parish for 2 weeks even thou our house was liveable. I went back to work asap, but I work at Home Depot. Now we are working 12 hrs a day, 6 days a week. Since we missed our 1 day at WDW, we will be going in Feb, 2006 to try to get something normal back in our life.

What does that have to do with the OP? They wanted only a 2 bedroom at VWL at a Katrina discount!..and have never posted before! Come on, don't be a fool. Do you know how many thousands of dollars were scammed from people like myself that gave, gave, then gave some more? Hundreds were arrested. It is unbelieveable that people would exploit such tragedy but it is rampant.
To those that were truly effected my heart goes out to you. I am ashamed how my country failed you for 5 days. So many idied needlessly. I have friends that went down South to dig in with their bare hands. If I were healthier I would have been along side you. Don't confuse the compassion people have for the victims of Katrina and Rita with the disgust they have with scammers and those that EXPLOIT tragedy!

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me!!!

I feel like I can comment on both sides, since I live just outside New Orleans and we were affected by the hurricane. I can totally see the benefit of "getting away" from all this chaos. Things are still not back to normal, and for people in metro New Orleans, they may never be. A trip to Disney might be the perfect thing for people around here, especially kids.

That said, if "times were tough" but you needed to get away, wouldn't you consider a scaled back trip? I mean a 2 bedroom villa on property sounds pretty nice to me! Or what about changing your dates? December around the holidays is peak season! Moving it up or back a few weeks would save a bunch on money right there.

Anyway, I can see both sides of the issue. But coming on here saying "I'm a hurricane victim, I need a vacation, can you put me up at a deluxe villa Christmas week" makes people a little skeptical, I think.

I'm not sure who died and made Handymom the conscience of those devesstated by Katrina and Rita. You are mislead and I am quite certain it is due to the coverage afforded to this area by the national media.

I lost my home and both vehicles in the New Orleans suburb of Metairie. When you have every material possesion you have ever owned sitting on your front lawn waiting for a dump truck and tractor to carry it away, then I will put some credence into your opinion. I might add that in the rubble are many pictures that commemorate previous vacations that my wife and two princesses and I have taken to Disney. While you're at it, let me know how it feels to see every stuffed animal that your 6 year old cherishes sitting in the street. A Disney vacation is exactly what my girls need right now because we will be living in a trailer for about a year while we build a new house.

Just because we were victims of the Hurricane does not mean that we were looting and killing. What you saw portrayed on TV was about a 4 square mile snapshot of the poorest neighborhoods in NO.

We were in Hugo--$20,000 damage to our home--my mother booked us on a cruise. We were very excited to go on that cruise. It was inexpensive in relation to other cruises--but a nice pick me up following a very hard time.

Not everyone assumes that all in Katrina were those portrayed breaking the law. I see you are a first time poster--well there are many veteran posters here from that area who have set the record straight.

No real need to get on here and blast everyone for having the wrong opinion.

I'm with HLAuburn on this one.

While you may need your trip to Disney as does the OP...do it for what you can afford. Many deals abound. When we went on our cruise--you can be sure we weren't in the presidential suite. My mom found something in her budget to accomodate our need to get away from our disaster zone. She didn't call cruise lines looking for the hurricane discount.

So just a thought--one need not be precisely in your shoes to understand your situation. While my daughter hasn't lost a toy to a hurricane yet--she has had to twice--limit packing her most prized possessions to the size of her dora the explorer suitcase and expect the possibilty that after the hurricane that may be all she has left. I can empathize--as can many others.

You may not give credence to our opinions. But I guess that is okay for someone who at least can type their dissatisfaction via computer on a message board. That and your vacations--and your ability to rebuild..places you steps ahead of those who have nothing to return to, no way to rebuild, and no computer to yell at others who aren't in their shoes.

The OP just asked if anyone knew of a code. She didn't ask for people to pay for her trip. If she has the proof that she is a Katrina victim then if there is a discount to be had then why shouldn't she be able to ask about one. It sounds like she has been able in the past to take nice vacations and when you start planning you start planning as you did in the past. OP I am very sorry for your loss and hope that you are able to find a way for your kids to have a great Disney Christmas.

Like I said, call the Disney reservations number, they were giving discounts or something for accomadations for Katrina victims. I did call with in a week of Katrina to find out if they were doing like Sea World and giving discounts on park tickets and that is how I found that out, said they would give me a free hotel stay but no discounts on tickets. All you can do is call and ask, it doesn't hurt to do that.

You lost everything but bought annual passes? If you truly lost everything my heart goes out to you, especially your child, but I am rethinking my donations to the Red Cross.

They were also partly bought with the money DS school refunded us for paying his tuition in whole this year in New Orleans. Why I'm justifying this to a stranger I don't know. You don't know me so don't judge me.
