Codes and already paid in full reservations

Okay another question, this one for my SIL who's going 3 weeks before us. If a general code were to come out and she has already paid in full, can she ask to have the code applied and receive a refund or could she use it to upgrade her reservation?

I think once a reservation is paid in full, they have to refund it and then start over again with a new one. This happened to me last Dec.

I was paid in full, then bought APs and used the code. They had to completely cancel my reservation and then rebook with the code. It's a lot easier if you wait to pay it off until you are sure that there won't be more discounts.

I'm not paying my May trip off until a week or so beforehand when I can be pretty certain AP rates will not come out (if they don't before then).
 
Here's what I did...had the code applied and had a credit on the room. Allowed dd16 to use the credit for her spending money!
 
Forgot to say that I didn't have to change anything. Didn't have to cancel and re-book.........they just applied the code......I didn't want to mess with waiting for a check to arrive in the mail......so we just "saved" the credit for dd to use.
