Having lived in Orlando, I can say that I have seen my share of bugs/roaches in restaurants. I do think most places take a proactive approach in dealing with them, but the reality is that it's Florida and the bugs are part of that.

I agree with you as far as it ruining a meal, but it shouldn't ruin your overall opinion of the restaurant if it is a one time thing...Captain Jacks on the other hand...EWWWWW! I have seen many there.

this wasn't at Disney but once we were at a rest.( nice, fairly expensive place) and the basket of rolls had bugs crawling in it...when i pointed it out to the server she just looked, shrugged , said "this is a farm" ( it was on an orchard) and walked away..talk about nonchalant

My guess is that, if it was big enough for you to notice it and it didn't quickly scurry away from the movement, it was a Palmetto Bug. Looks like a cross between a big beetle and a cockroach on steroids. They are a fact of life in Florida. When I lived there - there was once in my bathroom right after we had some huge bushes cut way down - it was dislodged from its home and found a way in - even though we regurally had preventative extermintor visits. This is pretty common.

And, WPC has a patio so there are extra doors that are opening and closing, or more likely this time of year, being kept open. I just hate bugs! But, in Florida, you kind of have to find a way to ignore because they are a fact of life. And I would bet that the managers lack of a big reaction was based partly (and I agree comping the desserts was an appriopriate level of "apology") on the fact that he lives there and sees these bugs all the time.

I am so grossed out by roaching I am having a hard time reading this post but I will say that I understand that Florida has its share of roaches and Palmetto bugs. I can't be avoided, only controlled. We were in Ghiradelli's in early Dec and my DD and I saw a dead roach, yes it was a roach, a blondie underneath a pointsettia plant. We were so grossed out that we didn't even report it. I regret not doing so.

Here in Texas, we have Asian Flying Cockroaches. Think Palmetto Bugs, without the segmented bodies. They're huge and they're disgusting.

Getting one of those in your house every once in awhile, is a given. They fly.

BUT - if what you saw was a German Cockroach, that's another story. Those are the ones that usually infest restaurants, and those are the ones that are associated with filth.

Even if it is Florida, the restaurant should not have visible roaches. Yes, there are some outdoor roaches, but there are also plenty of restaurants here that have indoor roaches, the dirty, filthy kind. Regardless, once the roach had crawled onto your table, it was the manager's job to refund your dining credits, which he didn't do.

We went to a Mexican restaurant here in Clermont, and there were MOUSE DROPPINGS covering the window sill. Talk about ewwwww... We will not be returning there. I expect a certain level of at least superficial cleanliness, and bugs crawling over the table would not meet that standard.

What a pity this happened to you - I do think the manager should have refunded the table service credits.

Its about like getting a hair in your food, it happens not all the time but once in a while. While I work in a very clean restaraunt there has been a bug seen a few times over the 8 years I have served there. We have monthly treatments and they have the option of calling them sooner if a problem. People bring them in, boxes etc. Now if it was on my food then yes I would be a bit upset and expect them to do something. I am sorry this happend but it does happen sometimes, bugs will get in no matter what you do the business has to keep up on treatments to make sure they stay away.

I have to agree that you handled the situation really well. As a previous poster said, you'd never eat out if you saw what happens at night in the kitchen of a restaurant. I guess bugs are just part of life, but a roach on your table? EWWWWWW. Actually double EWWWWWW. I think your meal should have been comped, especially if you didn't really touch it because you lost your appetite. On a different note, my friends were in a Mexican restaurant once enjoying margaritas w/ chips and salsa and looked up to see a mouse sitting on a sill nibbling on it's own chip. That would have sent me running and screaming for the exit. They are animal lovers, so they thought it was the cutest little thing. Not me. It's a RODENT!!! My test of how clean a restaurant is- check out their restrooms. If they keep their restroom a sty, chances are the kitchen isn't much better. YECH

Are palmetto bugs just as dirty as roaches, do they infest? Because I'm thinking that if it was a palmetto bug and those are not that bad then they should have told me that and maybe explained it ( he did ask if I was from out of state) If they're not like roaches I would have looked at it like eww a lady bug or a bee how'd that little bugger get in here oh well. But when he said I'm so sorry I want you to know that we spray for those nightly my thoughts are thank you you can take my plate now.

I doubt that the place was infested, but it would kill an appetite either way. If I were the manager, maybe I would have comp'd you a meal (invited you back for a dinner on the house)

If there is ONE roach there are sure to be plenty more. I remember being in the bootcamp for the Navy in Orlando and watching these things crawl the walls at night. Mind you I'm from Vermont we don't see those up here. The barracks in Jacksonville were even worse!

No biggie, its just a bug, and its fl as others said. Working at chain restaurants in the orlando area, I've seen several polmato bugs get inside, as well as those little gecko lizards. When a restaurant has 2/3 doors that are always opening and closing, litte guys can sneak in.
