My cocker puppy is ready to go home. My neighbor and I each got a cocker (they are sisters). DN (dear neighbor) picked them up yesterday!! I'm outta state and won't be home until middle of August so she is keeping Bailey with her.

What important info I should know about cockers? what kind of dog food should I feed her. Is crate training the best way to potty train her? How hard will it be to train her?

Feel me in I'm all ears

Hmm...we have a cocker who is 8. He's the sweetest dog EVER! We did crate train him when he was a puppy. He got very comfy in there. When he was about a year old we got rid of it. I don't remember what food we gave him as a puppy though, sorry. He was EXTREMELY easy to train. When we first got him we literally walked him about every 45 minutes. Within a couple of days he was trained. :thumbsup2

What color is Bailey?!?!?! Ours is all black and my brother has one that's beige.

My Mom has two cockers (sisters from the same litter) they are great, such polar opposites in personality. I think me and my sister have been reincarnated before our time, it's uncanny.

One check for you, their ears. They love dragging them along the ground, whilst their noses are doing lots of investigation, their ears are picking up all sorts. My Mom has had to take them to the vets a few times because they get hay/grass seeds stuck inside their ears. So after a good walk, just pat down their ears and have a quick look, as those things can get stuck real tight and are so uncomfortable.

They were both crate trained, but not really as a potty training method. More of a that's your safe place to go sleep sort of thing. My Mom was recommended a Nutra dry mix, but I think it's all down to what your vet thinks is best, or what they have gotten used to.

Enjoy Bailey, she's going be adorable!

Bailey is white with tan spots. I'm waiting for a picture my dn going to email. I'll post it when I get it

Congratulations ! I have a twelve week old chocolate cocker spaniel puppy, named Bailey. He has been real easy to train, we are using a crate and walk him when we take him out and already he knows to go to the door. We have another cocker that is black and four years old and her name is Bo. They are very loyal and loving, but can get very territorial. Good luck with your puppy, Bailey is a great name, I can't believe we both picked it!

Most cockers will do anything for food! So that makes training a little easier. I do recommend a good obedience class when the dog is a little older - maybe more for you to learn than the dog.

I've had two cockers and will get a third I'm sure after my period of mourning is over.

Are the obedience classes like at petsmart or petco good enough or should I look into other obedience schools?

Her full name and yes I gave her a full name :rotfl2: is Bailey Rose P(our last name). I just wish this stupid vacation was over with so I can go home to be with her

Congratulations on your new puppy. I received a cocker spaniel (I called her Firecracker) for my birthday when i was 19. For her first birthday we brought her back to the house where we got her and she was able to play with her mom. She was my baby and unfortunately she had to be put to sleep almost 4 years ago while we were at Dinsey World. She was 11. She had ezcema and we had to give her steroid shots to stop the itching. Her liver deteriorated very quickly. She lived a good life. She was buff and beautiful and spoiled and i miss her dearly!!! The one thing we really had to watch was her ears. Because they are long , we cleaned them very often. Also her anal sacs got clogged up so we would take her to the vet to get them sqeezed. If you have children beware that they are very territorial about their food!!!
Good luck with Bailey and love her with all you've got!!!

Unless you are looking to show the dog (then you need a professional handler) and most of us don't have show dogs then those should be fine. I would also check with the Human Society - might be cheaper.

Boy I am jealous! I have a cocker spaniel that is a nightmare. Even the dog trainer and the vet said that cockers tend to be nasty and snippy and I have the king of them and not the dog to get when you have kids (whis I had researched that before jumping into the cute little puppy trap LOL)...my neighbor has one and its a nice calm dog around adults but not so great around kids.
