CM discounts for OKW GV?

My BIL just told us that his family is planning a big trip (20 +) for next year and a family friend who is a CM told him that he could get them 3 GV for $600 each for a week. I told him I was skeptical. Does anyone know if CM get cash discounts that can be booked a year in advance? This would be during value season.

I'd be skeptical too. The ability to book 3 GVs at one time would be my first concern. My other question -- is the CM telling them that the GV will cost $600 per week? That's nuts. The lowest rack rate (pre-tax) for an OKW GV is $1,040 per night! $600 per night would be a more believable figure.

IIRC, there are only 11 GVs at OKW. Given that members tend to book these at the 11 month window (especially in the low point or "value" season), it's hard to believe that 3 would be available for cash rental at rack rate, let alone at a CM discount. And don't CMs have to wait until 60 days ahead of arrival to book at the CM discount rate?

I agree with you and PamOKW - it's not very likely. IMHO, the CM is making assumptions based on WDW resorts in general and actually knows very little (if anything), about how the DVC resorts work.

Let us know if this actually works out - now I'm quite curious, LOL!

I was talking to a CM at the Disney Store this Holiday Season and she told me that they get 20% discount for Disney hotel ressies.

OKW has 27 GVs...plus two in the new buildings....I may be off by one or two, but there are a whole lot more than 11.

OKW-27 GV's
SSR- 12 GV's
BWV-7 GV's
HH-5 GV's
VB- 6 Beach Cottages

I too have a hard time believing that anyone, including a CM, could rent a OKW GV for $86 a night.

CM rates are usually about 50% off the rack rate. That said, these rates are not available all the time and aren't available on all rooms -- rarely are these rates available a year in advance. When I was a CM, we'd book a hotel with whatever discount we could get, then switch to a CM rate when it became available. In October my SIL, a CM, tried to make a reservation for a friend for January 2004, but 2004 CM rates were not available at the time. It's just luck of the draw with CM rates so I'd say there's no way, even during value season, that a CM could book 3 GVs with their discount.

This is a good question!

I wonder if CM's are even offered a discount at DVC resorts. I would think not, and if they were I would think that it may only be on that 2%(?) portion that Disney actually owns.

Being a CM, I can tell you that yes, CM's are offered discounts on DVC rooms, if they are available. I have a fellow CM that has rented a 2 bedroom at Hilton Head in March for the past two years at 50% off the rack rate.

I don't think I would be holding my breath on getting a GV at 50% off rack rate, no matter what the time of year. Not saying it hasn't happened, but I sure would have other plans in place.

I think that a misunderstanding occurred somewhere along the line.

For example, it's possible that the family friend was talking about three Grande Vista units for $600 each for the week. Grande Vista is a deluxe Marriott timeshare resort near Sea World. And it's possible that the familiy friend could get them as II Getaways -- not by virtue of being a CM, but by virtue of being an II member. I'm not saying that's what happened, but it's one explanation of how a reasonable misunderstanding could occur.

I was under the impression that CM discounts were only short notice. Fat chance one much less three, sitting there at a couple of months out.

My grandma always said "Believe none of what you hear, and half of what you see...." :teeth:

I was a CM for several months and I don't remember exactly what the discount was or time frame to book, but I know my manager had several rooms reserved for her family at AS Movies for like $40 a night including tax. She went in October during Food & Wine Festival and had the rooms booked back in April.

CM discounts are available at any resort, DVC or not, when there is availability in general. Again I'm not sure of the amount of the discount.

A member of my immediate family was previously a CM, and although they are not allowed to discuss discounts, I can assure you that a GV that I have paid $1100 a night for, will not be available at an over 90% discount off. Remember the old game of whispering in each other's ear in a circle till the last person repeats what they think the first person said? It seems as information goes second hand, third hand, etc., it does become somewhat distorted.

Plus, don't rooms (except those either traded out for exchanges/cruises or the ones that Disney controls) remain in member inventory until about 60 days out? Unless there are a lot of trade outs, Disney just wouldn't have many rooms available at a DVC resort on short notice, and the chances of those rooms being 3 GVs are very, very slim.

I told my BIL most of what has been said here. I'm waiting for him to get back to me.

I am anxious to hear the answer to this. I can't imagine they would book GVs before the member booking deadline has past. That would be only 60 days out, so what gives?

Maybe the BiL heard $600 a night and could not believe it was that much , so assumed the CM meant $600 a week. :jester:

Here's some clarification. After I told my BIL of the discussions here. He got some more info. My BIL's CM contact has not told him what the total cost for the GVs will be but has clarified that it will be around $600 per person for the week. That makes a little more sense. The GVs have not been booked yet. I'm curious to see how far out they do get booked.
