I have made numerous reservations but have never been asked for the number on the back of my card. Today I called to make a reservation and the CM asked for this. I told her I was hesitant to do this and had never been asked before but she said it was something new they were doing. I did give it to her and got my confirmation # but I'm still feeling uneasy about this. Is this something new they are doing?

Yes it is new. They just started doing it not to long ago. I even had to give mine to my travel agent, she couldn't make the deposit through Disney without it.

I have been asked for that 3 digit number with many things I've bought either online or over the phone for the last year. I guess they do that so they can tell that you have the actual card in hand and not some number stolen off the internet or receipt. I use Visa and always have to give that number now. I noticed they also ask for the 4 digit number for American Express too. Just a safety precaution which can help you if someone ever stole you number they wouldn't be able to use it without knowing that 3 digit number.

I feel better now. I have had to use it for priceline and online purchases but I have never had to give it out verbally for a reservation.

It is called a V code. It is used to verify the card. They use it mainly for phone transactions. It goes along with address verification. Like skiwee1 said, it helps prevent fraud.

on Amex cards its call the CIN #. It is definately their way of knowing that you have the actual card in hand.

I just booked a ressie tonight and wasn't asked for that. I used a credit card for the Disney Visa deal. Hmmmmm....

To add to what shelleybell said, the code helps prevent fraud because about the only way to get the code is if you physically have the card in your hands. This helps make sure that you aren't using a CC# and expiration date that was dug out of the trash or stolen and posted on the internet.
