Those of you who use CM albums , what precautions do you take when using other products in your album . ( Do you use other products ? ) What would you not use ( I understand about acid free and the other thing that begans with L , but I was wondering about other stuff ). What are the best markers and pens to use if not using CM ? Do you add other paper and die cuts and stickers ? I'm very new to this and I just got a CM album , and I want to be really careful . But I love the Disney stuff offered at mousememories . Need some feedback . I see me becoming as hooked on scrapbooking as I am for Disney ! That's a dangerous combination for my hubby's pockets !

I use CM albums but put all sorts of "contraband" in them! LOL

I wallpaper most of my pages with patterned paper, use die cuts, stickers, glitter, chalks, eyelets, fibers, etc. etc. If it's something I know isn't acid-free like tickets to an event, a brochure, etc. I spray it with "Archival Mist" to de-acidify it before adhering it to my pages.

I use Zig archival pens mostly -- they come in all kinds of colors and tips. I also use Gelly Roll gel pens and colored pencils. And I just bought some gorgeous metallic Galaxy markers from the Dollar Tree ($1 each -- Scrap in a Snap sells them for 6/$15!!). They are archivally safe, too.

I say, if you love it, use it!! :teeth:

I use CM albums as well. You can use other products but just make sure they are acid & lignin free.

As for pens, I also use the zig. They are so nice and are double ended so you are getting more for your money.

You can go crazy with your pages. I like glitter, chalks, die cuts, etc...

Like mentioned here, if you use brochures, tickets, postcards, either spray them or use the CM photo mounting sleeves or portrait photo sleeves. I use them in my daughters nursery book for letters from her teacher since she probably uses regular paper to write on.

Thanks so much . If you don't mind I have a few more questions . What does buffered mean ? And where can you purchase the spray you mentioned ?

nicki:

You can get Archival Mist at scrapbook stores or Michaels. It's pricey -- $40 or so, but if you use a Michaels coupon, it's much more reasonable. I read that there will be a 50% off coupon in Sunday's paper good for Sunday & Monday and a 40% coupon for the rest of the week. And a bottle lasts a really long time. I've had mine for about 2 years. ;)

I am a new CM consultant (less than a month), but have been scrapping for 3 + years and my books over the years have used a lot of other papers and stickers.

Buffered basically means that the paper has been treated to help prevent acids from other sources (pictures, memorabilia, your fingers, other inks) from migrating through the paper to your pictures.

As far as markers and pens, I pretty much use Micron pens produced by Sakura. These are the pens that Creative Memories used to sell. I am not sure if these are still the pens that they sell but with their name on them or not. I do know the ones I bought 3 years ago from Creative Memories ARE Micron pens ( and I haven't needed to replace any). These are the same pens used by Quilters (my mom is a big time quilter in a guild) to sign their quilts. You can get them at Michaels, and many other stores if you want colors other than what CM sells .

When I have used other "contraband" product in the past ;) such as stickers and / or paper, I have made sure that it does not come in contact with the pictures. I pretty much keep away from putting any stickers on the pictures themselves regardless of whether they are CM or not. There are definitely a lot of stickers out there. Quite frankly I own a bunch of them. I bought a TON of Mrs. Grossmans when CM was selling them (from Hobby Lobby:rolleyes: ). As for the safety of other brands, I just don't know. Like I said, I tend to not use any stickers on my pictures regardless of who made them. When I have used others (Me and My Big Idea, Sandylion Disney Stuff, etc...) they have always been placed away from the picture.

Keep in mind, the more paper you put on the page (e.g. wallpapering the pages) makes the pages and the books themselves heavier. I try to limit the wallpapering, or reduce the pages in the book when I do it. In fact I do a lot of picture wallpapering, where I basically completely grid the layout with lots of pictures with a little bit of colored paper as accent. Talk about heavy!!!!

As far as glues, I ALWAYS use Creative Memories tape runners. Yes I have bought others, but not found anything I like nearly as well, nor that I feel comfortable with. The tape runners are comparable with most of the other "tape runners" on the market in price, and quite frankly I think they rock.

With regards to other memorabilia, I either put the stuff in a separate photo mounting sleeve, or I tape it down with the tape runner, mounted on CM paper, or the book, and make sure it does not come in contact with any pictures. Since I use the page protectors, that is pretty protected. For newspaper articles, copying them onto special paper, and then mounting them is really the way to go, as the newspaper will yellow considerably. I do not use the archival mist. I haven't looked at it really closely ever, but I do not want to spray anything onto my memorabilia. I would much rather use the clear plastic sleeves to protect them, than to take a chance of it affecting the memorabilia, or ruining something. Others have used it and had luck, and it may be fine, I don't know. I am paranoid however. I actually freak a little about digital photos printed on the CM paper and let them dry forever before using them, and then immediately put a page protector over them before ever closing the book.

As for OTHER THINGS. I personally cannot vouch for the eyelets and or wire used in scrapbooking. I am not concerned on the acid free, archival side of things. I am just thinking that is a big hunk of metal or hard plastic, etc... in the book that will over time leave some sort of impression on other pages or tear something there. That may not really be the case, but that is what keeps going through my mind. Paper meets metal, wears through. I don't know. Adding too much poofiness to individual pages also concerns me a little, does it limit the amount of pages in a book? Are there problems with the page protectors?

I hope this info helped somewhat. Good luck.

I am an official hodge-podge scrapper! I have several CM albums along with other brands. I pretty much keep to the mind set, Never put a sticker or die cut on or over a picture....keep memorbilia from touching and usually I just create a page with all of that!
Like Lainy67 said about wire and eye lets. I love the look but wonder about it down the road so I don't use it. Plus I have a very addictive must have personality so....I don't even want to try eyelets! LOL!
I will say I just bought the CM gold and Silver pens and LOVE THEM! They flow so smoothly! Wish they made white!
I am going to look at the brand Lainy67 mentioned for white...
Also I think about my mom's scrap book she had from a small child, the black pages with tape or little corners. IT is still in good shape, some of the pictures I am sure faded and some have come off but all in all the memories are preserved! So I figure if I am buying all Acid free/Lin., using page protectors The pages should last for several generations! :D

Thanks for all the info . I never considered putting stickers directly on my pictures , I just want to be sure what is the best formula for mixing other products in with my CM Albums . Like I said this is fairly new for me , and the album was a big investment . I plan to take my time doing my pages ( I 'm saving up for the CM cutting system right now ) and because I am a very patient person I tend to research everything carefully , stock on the supplies I need and than began a project . This would drive most people crazy but I am having fun making out a wish list and poring over the catalogs . It reminds me a little of planning a Disney trip ! I may not began my first page until next month , but I have already set aside a area for my supplies ( including two iris carts , a flexible binder with my different pictures/memorabalia stored in it , a bag to hold my album in when going to workshops , and a binder for stickers and die-cuts ). I see I will be on this board a lot .

Smart MOVE! I do that for tools but not for stickers, paper and die cuts! Wish I did because I have way too many! LOL!
You will be very happy with the circle cutter I love mine! I also love their square maker!
I am very picky about my tools and so far I can truly say I use every tool I bought! Same with punches I could go nuts buy them but I am very picky!
Have fun! It is a wonderful hobby!

Hey gang,
I am new to this whole Scrapbooking thing, I apparently am good at it from what my friend say, but who knows. :) Anyway, I was wondering what CB meant. I don't want to sound ignorant or anything, I was just curious. I don't own alot of scrapbook stuff and what I do have, others bought me. I am about to go on my Honeymoon at Disney and would love to make a scrapbook out of all the "memories"
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
Heather K

Do you mean CM instead of CB? CM means Creative Memories. It is an at home company, you host a party order from a person, no store to shop in, similar to Tuperware. If you meant CB I don't have a clue....but if you see LSS it means, Local Scrap book store! I swear we do need at the top of this forum, abreviations decoder! LOL!

I did mean CM- Sorry about that. Sometimes my fingers like to type the wrong keys.
Is it a good company to work for? Just wondering because I need something on the side to do. My job is on the rocks- they are laying off tons of people, and I need something extra. I am getting married this weekend so my FH tells me not to worry because his salary will be fine for us to live off of, but I know it would be nicer for a while to have two incomes. (Just MHO)
Anyway, thanks for the decoder :)

I can't answer that ??? but I am sure there are many on here could.
Congrats on your wedding what a great time to start scrapping! At the start of a marriage! Oh how I wish I did that almost 14 years ago! I wouldn't be so behind!

I really started scrapping at the birth of my 3 year old. (almost 4 now!!) Her scrapbook is a never ending thing for me. I just haven't bought many supplies for myself and now that I am getting married, I would love to know more about scrapbooking and how it all works :-) I just did it to be more creative than putting pictures in a photo album for my daughter, but now I have found it to be fun and a stress reliever.

Thanks for the congrats. I am excited about it. Thank goodness my daughter loves him too!! :)
Can't wait to get to Disney and take tons of pictures!

WOW Then you are way ahead of the game! Kids albums seem to take forever to get caught up on....believe me! I have 2! LOL!
I would suggest taking a look at the CM web site http://www.creative-memories.com/home.asp
and find a local consultant. Talk to her and then host a party! You can earn credit towards products. Get to see and use their tools and of course talk to them about being a consultant.
Have a wonderful time at Disney!

Is it a good company to work for? Just wondering because I need something on the side to do.

It depends on what you're looking for in the way of money. Most of the CM consultants I know are Hobbyist CM's, meaning they do it to support their habit, not really to make any money. To make money you have to buy much less than you sell  which isn't always easy! The markup isn't all that high, and if you don't have a strong customer base, it can be hard to meet the minimums. It's always a good idea to start by having a party and inviting all your local scrapping buddies - then you might have an idea of how much they spend on CM products. If you have new scrapping friends they might spend a lot because the products are easy to use, and coordinate well. However, if you get your friends turned on to scrapping and they get into all the "contraband" you may find that they don't use as much CM stuff. I have a friend who's a CM consultant and all her friends used mostly CM until meeting me. Now three of them work for me to support their habits, and they don't use a lot of CM anymore. Good for me yes, bad for her, yes. (I still buy my CM stuff from her too, so she's not TOO mad)

You may find you have better luck selling something you won't buy too much of. Or get a job at a lss, that's ALWAYS fun! (teachers make more money though)

CM is a great company to work for, I have been a consultant going on 3 years now and I love it. I use it to support my scrapbook habit and to meet new people but I know several people that depend on it for income. It is really easy to get started I will be glad to answer any question you might have.

CM has some great new DISNEY stickers check them out on the web site.
