OK, so I bought myself a Kindle for Christmas (don't ask!)

I just ordered it and waiting for delivery. I went online to get all the free books and it says it is automatically delivering it to my Kindle. Seriously?

Is that possible? Is that all there is to it? I can't figure out how that would work! Or am I doing something wrong?

I probably should have checked into this before I "purchased" a boat load of the free books!

Did you register your Kindle to your Amazon account? Did you use the same info to buy your Kindle as you have on your Amazon account? Same name, address, email, credit card? Once your account knows your Kindle, yes, the books get automatically sent to it. It's kind of like cell phones. I still can't figure out how a person can be traveling at 60 miles an hour and talk & listen on the cell phone, it knows where the phone is to send the signal and the phone works traveling at that speed. :confused3 All this technology is incredible.

Yes, the next time you turn on your Kindle and have Wi-Fi or 3G access (I keep my WiFi turned off so that the battery lasts longer), your new books will download. I'm having fun reading some of the classics -- and they're free!

haha welcome to the Kindle, Maps!!

Yes, seriously. That's how it works and that's why it's so great. Now that you have purchased a Kindle, you have established an Amazon account and your Kindle is linked to that account. Anything you purchase - free or for $$ - from the Kindle store will automatically download to your new Kindle. It may go to your Home screen or it may go to Archives, in which case you move it to the Home screen with the flick of a finger.

Depending on the model you bought, the Kindle will either find a wifi connection (which you will set up yourself when it arrives) or will use the 3G cell technology to find the files and download them to your new Kindle. A minute later and you're reading!!

I think the Nook works the same way but others readers don't have the wifi/3G option and only download onto your computer and then via cable to the reader. Still, pretty cool!!

Do yourself a favor if you got the wifi version and go ahead and find your WEP key or other password to your home's wireless network (if you have one.) That has been a frustration with some new Kindle owners - they want to get set up as soon as the Kindle is out of the box and they can't find their password. Check yours to make sure you know it so you won't have that issue.

Happy reading!!

I have been reading Kindle and Nook books for a couple months now and I don't even have an ereader yet. I have the apps on my computer and on my phone. Yes, it is that easy-"buy" the book, open up the app on whatever device, click a button, read. The Nook will even save your bookmarks from one device to another-so, when I get my Nook for Christmas :rolleyes1, I can pick up where I left off on the book I am currently reading on my phone. :thumbsup2

The Kindle does this as well. When I read on my phone app, it sync's up to where I left off on my Kindle and vice-versa.

I've had my Kindle for a couple of weeks and another cool feature I just learned about yesterday---there's a audio setting that will read your books to you. Pretty neat for a car trip or for the kids to use!

(note: not all books, just the ones that the publisher will allow to be done that way)

And if you work out on treadmills/ellipticals etc where you aren't holding your book, you can turn the sound all the way down, turn on the audio setting, and it will flip the pages as you read. :) Thanks to the dis-er who let me in on that secret!
