my niece is getting and american girl doll for christmas so I was planning on buying her some clothing for it along with some kid of storage trunk. I was going to order an outfit from AG this weekend but someone just told me that target sells clothing that fits the dolls. Has anybody bought any of that clothing? I figured if its cheaper I can get her 2/3 outfits from target rather than just one from AG. Any recomendations? Should I check out target or just stick with the actual AG clothing?

thanks
-Lauren

I have never purchased the clothing but did purchase a generation girl (thats the name of the target line) Hair styling chair, similar to the AG one and my dd loves it.

We did this last year for my daughter's AG dolls and the Target clothes fit just fine. Save your money and get the Target outfits which are just as cute.

I disagree, the AG outfits are so much nicer. Watch the AG website, they have monthly sales. DD got a lot of My Generation clothes (Target) and they don't fit as well and the quality is not at all comparable, we ended up selling them at our garage sale. DD likes her dolls dressed in their clothes from the time period they come from so each doll have 1 or 2 outfits and that's it. We have a lot of clothes that Jess, Kailey and Nicki wear.

The Target clothes are ok IMO, but AG is definitely better quality. The only real problem we've had has been the shoes from Target were a bear to get on.

Our local craft store... A.C. Moore has outfits to fit any 18inch doll for only $10.99. Every week they offer a 40% off coupon so they outfit ( that also comes with shoes) is a little over $7.00! They also offer a nice wooden doll chest that is on sale this week for $19.99. They do have a new website but I do not know if it is available through the site...

The Target stuff is good too... They have a bunch of accessories including a table chair tea set, horse, buble bath...

I would stick to the AG stuff. My kids would rather have one AG outfit than 2 or 3 Target or other brand.

I would DEFINATELY stick with AG clothes! My dd has 12 dolls (don't ask .. grandma spoils her WAY too much LOL) and AG clothes are a much better quality and fit, IMO.

you get what you pay for.

I was not thrilled with the high prices. I picked up 1 outfit and after I was able to really look it over I realized the quality was great. i went ahead and ordered 3 more outfits. they come wrapped very nicely and you can tell they will last for a long time. I did the same with the doll I bought one and liked it so much i bought another one. I went from unsure on any AG stuff to spending over 300$ at xmas for stuff for them on the site.

I looked it all over and have no buyers remores at all, actually I am addicted now too.

get 1 outfit even if its in the sale section and see what you think

As an Aunt if you want the "WOW" factor you will get the American Girl outfit -- especially if she is getting a historical doll.

I have gotten the Target (which is fine) but last year I buckled down and got several AG items and it was just more special. As another poster said, the Target clothes are fine quality but the shoes are hard to fit. And AG "themes" their clothes so nicely. If your niece has a hobby you could get an outfit in that area - like soccer, poms, basketball.. I bought the flute for my daughter last year and it is so cute!

Now, the trunks are going to be *way* expensive -- I don't know how nice of an Aunt you are!

Other ideas with an outfit that would make your niece extra happy would be an animal - Coconut or Liquoice or a horse - and they have very cute accessories. (if she is getting a historical doll they all have pets as well) Also another hit with my girls was the $18 doll carrier. It holds the doll on top and has a zipper area for accessories.

Good luck and have fun!

Target has poor quality.. or just not AG quality.. you get what you pay for... we tried this once and the outfits are too tight and the shoes didn't fit! JUNK.

As far as Target goes.. I can say My little girl got the bathtub and loves it... and we have a friend that is getting the bed and the table... I think the furniture is fine.. but not the clothes!

Put me down as another one for AG clothes. We have some of the Target pieces and they don't fit well and certainly don't hold up. The upside to those higher prices with AG is that the items are all guaranteed. We had one dress that had some velcro coming off and they replaced it for free (after playing with it for the last 2 years).

The AG quality is great and the pp is right, the themed items make it very special to a little girl.

The only Target items that I would consider are the horses and the newer storage unit (I think it's around $50) that I have heard raves about.

Can you give me more details about the storage unit @ target?

Thanks

Well that answered my question thank you. I'll go with an AG outfit. As for the trunk I was planning on getting the one from AC Moore. Can't go wrong with $20.

Her birthday is the first week of January so I was thinking about getting her a doll outfit for Christmas that has a matching girls outfit that I'll get her for her bday. In your experiences do your girls like the matching outfits? We are planning a trip to the AG store in the spring so I was going to get her a cute spring outfit for that day.

Personally I think its based on age if they are into that.

My girls are 8 and 5 , the 5 year old would like it probably the 8 year old said ,NO THANKS. I would ask mom or feel her out before you buy the outfit to match. Thats what I did for my girls

Depends on the age of the girl, but there were a lot of girls with matching outfits when we went to Chicago. The armoire at Target last year was so cute, but we couldn't find it anywhere! I wasn't aware that thye had a new one out this year.

I bought that storage trunk for my dd for Christmas - It's wrapped and hiding now so I can't really comment on how well it's recieved, but it sure beats the tension rod on a lower shelf of a bookshelf!

We've bought and returned 3 of the Target outfits. 2 outfits simply didn't fit. On one it was the shirt (long sleeve), the sleeves were to tight and when it velcroed in the back it pulled to tight in the front and slid up the belly. On that outfit the skirt and cardigan fit fine. The other outfit it was the jeans that didn't fit - much like the My DIsney Girl outfits I found tucked away in a closet that I bought years and years go from TDS - the jeans wouldn't quite velcro over the behinds of the AG dolls. The third outfit we didn't even attempt, they were all purchased at the same time and we didn't want to chance it. The quality was also umm, well it wasn't awful, but it wasn't great either. It was more $5 quality than $10 quality and it certainly wans't AG quality. None of the shoes for the 2 attempted outfits fit either, they were way to big. The back of one package showed that they had an undergarmet set and that might be worth it.

We bought a shift type night gown, a denim jacket and a pair of lace up converse looking shoes at Micheals and those all fit well enough. The only complaint there is that the laces on the shoes are obnoxiously long.

With regards to matching outfits - my oldest (9) prefers *similar* outfits to outright matching, and my little two who are getting Bitty Twins for Christmas (one twon for each of them) only ooh and ahh over the matching pajamas, they don't seem to care one way or the other about the girl outfits, but they're only 4.

Just wanted to toss my two cents in...I got some really cute homemade outfits on ebay for the dolls (dresses and PJs). If you are buying for a little girl who's not that picky about the clothes (DD is 4 so she really won't know the difference). The clothes are very well made and I've gotten some for between $3-5 an outfit!
