Clothes in suitcases get soaked at the Orlando Airport sitting on the tarmac during storms?

I've been reading that some people have opened their suitcases to find soaking wet clothes because suitcases are left on tarmacs during lightning storms. How often does this happen? I have a hard case suitcase so would water get into mine too. People have said they pack their clothes in garbage bags lining their suitcase. What are the odds of this?

Every single thing I pack goes into a ziplock bag. It not only protects everything from the weather, but also from people who pack beverages in their suitcases.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I don't trust any luggage to stay water tight, tsa to close it right if they search or that there is no liquids in someone elses bag that will not leak all over mine. Just assume the worst and pack accordingly and it won't ruin your experience when you finally open your suitcase. Even if it's not left on the tarmarc, it has to get out of the plane somehow in any weather.

I think in the summer, the odds are pretty high. Our outbound plane coming from Pittsburg landed at MCO just before a major storm hit in late July. They were off loading luggage into a cart. When the storm hit, the airport completely closed - no in bound or outbound flights for 45 minutes. We watched the luggage just sit there in the pouring rain that entire time. And when we got home, one piece of our luggage was soaked through. Of course, it isn't nearly so bad when you are home as when you arrive. It was a lesson learned for me.

It can happen at any time of year....rainstorms or snowstorms....not much difference. And as another poster said..other people sometimes pack large quantities of liquids which can also break and soak not only their stuff but others also. I have used travel spacebags for years.....don't need a vacuum to seal them...just zip close them and roll the air out. Saves a ton of space in my bag and also the rolling keeps things less wrinkled. I've seen my bags sitting in a cart on the tarmac in snow waiting to be loaded in Philadelphia and yet, everything remains dry inside. And, even worse, several years ago someone else had packed glass bottles of baby formula in their bag, which broke and obviously my bag was next to or under theirs and my bag was completely soaked with stinky baby formula.....completely ruined the bag......which Disney compensated me for since it appeared to have happened on the truck from MCO to a Disney resort, not at the airport. But, everything packed in the bag was dry and perfectly fine........packed in my space bags.....no smell or anything.

In 50 trips, it happened to us only one time. I've not changed my packing habits because of it -- but I'm comfortable throwing stuff in a dryer if need be.

Space Bags!

This happened to us on a trip to Las Vegas. We left from Atlanta and there was a rainstorm there that caused our clothes to get wet. We had both hard and soft luggage and it really didn't matter, they all got wet. There were 6 of us in our group and our hotel room was covered with wet clothes hanging on everything!

I have good luggage and I have watched mine sit in the storm in Atlanta. When I got to my destination things on top were a tiny bit damp, Everything else was in great shape! (And it sat out there in the storm in Atlanta for a good hour. But my bag costs about $300 so.... YMMV)

In 20 years of traveling to WDW & Florida this has only happened to me once and that was at Port Canaveral in 2008. Got to the port and it was pouring. Water was too high and the port got closed and they bused us to Fort Lauderdale to get on the Wonder there. When our bags showed up one of the three was soaked and that one had my clothes for Palo in it and our reservation was for that first night. I was able to reschedule the Palo dinner for another night. Never had it happen at the airport though.

Another time I did it to myself. Threw the bags in the back of my pickup and then decided to go through a carwash. Opps.
