Just read in the Orlando sentinel that they are going to close the animation studios on Monday. If they do, what do you suppose they will do with the animation buildings and the parking garage they built for the animators, and what do you think will happen to the animation tours. When we were there in December, all of the animators desks were empty, there were no personal effects on the now empty desks, and it was during the week and there sure were'nt any animators around. I asked the tour guide about it, and she says they have thretened this before, but never followed through. So I asked her why the desks were empty and there were not any animators around. She actually had no answer! Makes you wonder if they are actually going throgh with the threat this time.

Now, eventually you do plan to have animation on your animation tour, right?

I guess our trip to WDW later this month will not allow us an oppurtunity to once again visit the animation exhibit.

Over the weekend CNN confirmed the announcement by Disney as to the closing. Unfortunatly, I got sidetracked and didn't hear any details.

Just saw this story on Neil Cavuto on Foxnews. I couldn't believe my eyes. Looks like That's All She Wrote for old school animation. So, TRAGIC!!! I expected for Roys site to comment today-but it has been the same for days.

With this News, I wonder if Disney should change the Name of the Disney/Mgm Studios to something else, after all there is no Studio productions going on at the Disney/MGM Studios anymore.

Maybe the Park should be called "Florida Adventure".

Burbank, CA -- January 12, 2004 -- "Closure of the Walt Disney Florida Feature Animation facility is yet another example of Michael Eisner' s de-emphasis of creativity and total indifference to the impact his decisions have on the people who helped to make the company great. Once again, the Eisner regime has emphasized short-term gains over long-term value. The drain of talent over the past several years from the company's feature animation department in Orlando, Burbank, Paris and Tokyo has been absolutely gut-wrenching. People are being asked to leave because management - particularly Michael - can't figure out what to do with them. That certainly is not the fault of the talent. It is the fault of the so-called strategic thinkers at headquarters." - - Roy E. Disney

Well, actually, it will. The animation exhibit is, and always has been, separate from the animation studios. Even before the Animation Building was built, there was an animation exhibit. That will continue. You won't see animators working, but all the other interactive elements and displays and such are still there.

It's about TIME he said something! Although ... isn't this more a David Stainton thing? (Yeah ... yeah ... I know ... it all tiers up to Eisner. But still ... I've got to agree that it would be pretty darn hard to keep a full retinue of animators working when there's nothing for them to work on.)

Yes, and Animal Kingdom would be just as interesting if they used stuffed animals in place of the real ones.

Damn - I've given them an idea.

Very good, Ian!

And why is there nothing for them to work on?

Because Disney has chosen to outsource their feature animation through Pixar and Vanguard.

Some may not like AV's style, but he is clear and to the point. Its easier to slap a label on something than it is to create it yourself. And that's not what created legions of fans who want to discuss (and buy) this stuff.

Why wait for the gift shop when you can buy plush right off the safari truck!

Nice try at biting wit, but no go. Almost anyone who visited MGM on a weekend, holiday, or after 6pm and went to the Animation Building saw the whole deal without real animators working. It's not like the place was staffed so that whenever a guest was present, there were people at desks. And let's not forget the years that the animation attraction was available before the new building was even built. The attraction can, and has already, stood on it's own and is still a great introduction to animation.

What is currently outsourced that Feature Animation in Florida could have been working on? Not CG, but hand-drawn?

Its not so much what has been outsourced -- but what projects did they cancel?

The big one that was recentley cancelled is "A Few Good Ghosts" -- That project was being worked on by WDFA-F - and now it is a no-go.

Why is Disney outsourcing production when they had a fully functional, high quality, fully staffed animation studio with a great reputation and proven box office results?
