Closing Cards?

I am contemplating doing the SW Airlines 60k points offer, which would add yet another credit card to my wallet. Most of my cards are no annual fee, but this one does have a fee - clearly worth it for the 60k in points.

Do you typically close out cards once you've gotten the bonuses?
Wait until just before the annual fee for the next year would be due?

It looks like most of the points offers say you can get bonus points if you haven't had that card or gotten bonuses for 24months, so is it better to close the account asap once you've earned the bonus? Or do you just spread your spending around so that you are covering each annual fee with rewards on that card?

Trying to figure out how to take advantage of points offers without having a silly number of cards and/or unnecessary annual fees.

I thought the 60K point offer ended? I was upset that I should have done it.

I got an email from them today saying "last chance" on the 60k offer, expires on 7/22. I also see a 40K offer for the "premier" version of card, which has a higher annual fee, but gives you 6,000 points per year on your anniversary.

Specifically on Southwest, what is the consensus about whether the points you get for the annual fee are worth it? $100 for 6,000 points doesn't look too bad (looks like the non-discounted price to buy points would be $165 for 6000 points).

Anybody have any luck negotiating the higher points bonus for a different card?

ETA- rofl, saw wrong thing earlier so deleted my post. You would have better luck with this q on the "i love credit cards thread" lots of discussion on Southwest over there!

The Premier is no longer at 60k, im not sure what it is now though... i guess some people were saying to change the URL to 60k. If you do go that route, make sure you take a screenshot of it.

I guess Chase will now deny you the card if you apply within the 24 month language... i guess thats a good thing to us haha.
