Closing a pool question.

The water turned so cold so fast this year that we're closing our pool this weekend. Problem is that it is SO COLD that nobody can get in it to pick up the few leaves that are on the bottom that we can't seem to get with the skimmer.

Will this be a problem, if we let them stay until the pool gets opened up again?

a few won't be much of a problem..they may get a little slimy and leave spots where they lay all winter, and may leave a little algae, but I don't think it's a really big deal unless you are talking a LOT of leaves...lol..that reminds me of the time when our pool developed a leak and the water was too cold to get in..we borrowed a wet suit and someone climbed in and found the leak..good luck!

One year I needed a new cover and I couldnt afford to buy one until late fall. By then the water was icy and there were leaves covering the entire bottom. At the time I felt it wouldnt be a problem and left them and covered the pool. The next year I spent the ENTIRE summer trying to keep the dang thing from developing algae. It was horrible. Spent lots of money and time on that stupid mistake. I think a few wont hurt but a lot will definitely ruin your next summer.

I would get them out - they stain the liner and lots of them will cost you $$$ in chemicals when you open the pool.

If you can't hook the pool vaccuum up to the filter to get them out, try the roman version - a siphon. Put the pool vacuum and hose in the pool and use your garden hose to fill it completely with water - the air will bubble out.

Keep both ends of the vacuum hose under water, then yank out one end very quickly and toss it on the ground. You can put your hand over the end to keep air from getting in and ruining the siphon as you yank and toss.

The key to a siphon is keeping the "out" end lower than the "in" end (which is attached to the vacuum head.)

Once the water is coming out in a flow, gently move the vacuum head over to the leaves and they'll get sucked out. Once they're all out, take out the vacuum to store and empty the hose so it doesn't freeze over the winter.

If you wear rubber gloves, the cold water is more tolerable.

I'd get them out. We closed our pool this past weekend. DH got in there and took all the leaves out. He said it was cold, but not nearly as cold as it will be in spring when we open the pool and would THEN have to get those leaves out!!

Throw one of the kids in and tell them to be quick. They're young, they'll adjust. Happens to us every year, usually we have a few masks 9' down. One year my son put on a dive skin!

I was also in yesterday and will probably get myself in today after vacuuming! We should start a contest an see who gets in their (unheated) pool the latest and what the temp was!

Uh no its not coming.. I'm about an hour north of him and I see HIGHS in the 50's next week.. My neighbor closed her pool at the end of July this summer sucked

If I lived closer I would gladly get the leaves out of your pool for you. Are you afraid diving in would trigger another heart attack? Sometimes I feel like when I dive in to cold water it is going to give me a heart attack....after the shock wears off it feels sooo good though.

Actually, to some degree, yes. But mostly it is just too cold for me... though I am going to have to force myself tomorrow.

Offer some kid in your neighborhood $10 to jump in and get them! I know a few 12 year old boys in my neighborhood who would do it for money!
