Hi,
Just kicking around a last minute trip down the Florida coast (Vero beach for a couple of nights and then driving down the coast to Key West) and I am wondering what the closest airport is to Vero Beach? Any thoughts on availabilty at Vero for the end of February?
Thanks, Murphy

Hi :)
someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Orlando MCO. :thumbsup2

Closest main airport (to which you can get direct flights from many cities) is West Palm Beach, then Orlando, and if heading south part of time such as Key West, West Palm would be the choice. There are other closer but small airports which usually require first flying in to another and then taking a second flight. Cannot predict any availablity for February but often inn rooms can be gotten late. You should note that traveling from Vero to Key West is a very ambitious goal because that is close to a 5 hour drive.

Thanks for the info. We don't mind the drive, but will most likely stay a day or 2 in Miami and fly home from Miami or FLL.

The closest airport is actually Melbourne, which I don't think anyone mentioned (notwithstanding drusba's comments about smaller airports).

I love Melbourne airport, but it has limited options and will cost more than a larger airport.

Actually, the price on Delta from Boston to Melbourne was not bad, considering it also Mass school vaction week.
Do you know if Melbourne offers as many car rental agencies as the larger airports?
Thanks, Murphy

Yes, MLB is closest, PBI (West Palm) is also pretty close, but we have found MCO to be the most convenient getting to VB. Actually PBI is closer to the City of Vero Beach, but PBI and MCO are about equidistant from Disney's resort there, which is actually closer to Wabasso Beach and Sebastian than it is to Vero proper.

There are fewer rental agencies at MLB and prices are generally higher, and selections more limited, due to the much smaller size of the airport. It also sounds like you're looking at a one-way rental, which might also be pricier coming from MLB.

We got our VB reservations via the waitlist (2BR); we got on the waitlist for a 2BR at 7 months for February vacation week and we matched pretty quickly. If all you want is an Inn Room (which I would recommend over a studio at the same point cost) you might have better luck with availability. You are also more likely to get a ressie later in the week, like Weds and Thurs. If you haven't been, you really ought to try VB. It is a peaceful, warm break from our New England winter. We've been all but one year since '04.

Good luck with the planning!

I was hoping someone would add this information about MLB. Thanks, vicki_c.

And, Avis, Hertz, Alamo, National, and Budget are available car rental agencies at Melbourne International.
