Closed vs deleted threads

Why are some threads/topics closed but others deleted entirely?

Sometimes a thread breaks the DIS guidelines so blatantly it is better to delete it. Sometimes a thread goes south and there are so many attacking posts it is better to delete it than have such hurtful comments be shown. Sometimes, someone regrets what they posted and ask us to delete their posts/threads. We don't delete threads or posts lightly. Threads are usually closed when it's obvious to us that they are counterproductive to discussions on the boards.

Thanks for answering. I guess something must've gone off the rails on a thread I was following when I wasn't looking, lol. Oh well. It's frustrating to not know what happened and it's just gone.....
