You can get the little kits at any pharmacy/Wal Mart that has wax softener and a rubber bulb to irrigate you ear. That's always worked for me.

But if you're having any pain related to your ear, see a doctor- you don't want to mess with an infection.

My ears feel clogged when I get congested. It makes me dizzy, so it's a pretty big inconvenience. I usually take a decongestant for a few days and it helps a lot. I have to be remember to do it before flying or they really hurt. My doctor suggested Mucinex-D along with something like Claritin.

Hydrogen peroxide or the candling method have both worked for me. Last time, I went to the ENT and he picked it out - weird feeling!

I take Singulair every day and use nose drops if it gets really bad. My doctor told me that fluid in your ear can make your ears feel clogged up. The fluid can turn into an ear infection if you don't dry it out. The nose drops and allergy meds take care of that for me.

I think it would be important to find out what's clogging up your ear. If it's excessive fluid buildup, that would probably be controlled with antihistamines. If it's excess wax buildup, it may need to be removed, preferably by a doctor. At any rate, if using the drops hasn't relieved the problem in a couple of days, I'd suggest a call to the doctor.

O.K. this is going to sound weird but here goes. Use a water pick on the lowest setting. I told you. I get constant ear infections when diving because I get excessive ear wax build up at certain depths. I use peroxide after every dive but it if builds up too much, the old water pick works. Do NOT do this on anything but the most gentle cycle and it helps if you've used the peroxide first to kind of loosen it up. It might take a few trys. If it's sinus drainage, good old sudafed. If it hurts at all, get to the doctor, you might have an infection. Good luck.

As someone who dreads going to the doctor, going in to get your ears checked out is about as easy as it gets. They can usually figure out the problem pretty quickly, and they'll give you meds and/or clean out your ears. It's cool when they clean out your ears because you'll feel better immediately. :)

ETA: Re the water pik thing mentioned above, back in the day my doc actually used a water pik to clear my ears. More recently saw an ENT and there procedure was much gentler.

I've done the exact same thing with a water-pik and it works.

I didn't recommend it because I'm not sure if it's 100% safe, but I've never had any issues doing it.

Probably not safe but if you use the low setting and nothing but water it shouldn't do any damage. I've had the doctor us a similar method, pour peroxide in, have me wait then come in and squirt water in with a gun like thingy. I've also had them vacuum it out, just yuck.

Another vote for the kits. I couldn't hear right for two days, got one of those and a big blob of wax popped out. Immediate relief!

Sudafed if it's fluid. ENT if it's wax. And don't ever dance around in front of the mirror with q tips in your ears. Very dangerous for your eardrum if someone walks in and the door hits the q tip and jams it into your ear. Just some, like, general advice. :rolleyes1:D

Go to the doctor to find out what it is. Don't use QTips and beware candling...that is dangerous.

That being said, I have a recurring problem with this. I went to the doctor a few times a year for many years. The doctor told me that I just get wax build up. Once it builds up, those drops and bulb will do NOTHING for me. After watching the nurse use this on me several years, I just bought myself one on Amazon because after this many years, I know exactly what it is and I know how to use the device. Again, OP, if this is the first time happening to you, see a doctor.
I do the drops or peroxide first and then use this (lukewarm water and a little peroxide)

The vacuum thing with the needle scared me!
I'm sure using the Elephant Ear Washer myself isn't 100% safe because I could poke too far down or something, but I just got tired of waiting for days or a week to see a doctor and paying a copay.

just go to the ENT- its like a 5 minute visit- just took my mom today for her wax removal- every 6 months unless it builds up faster! The last time we went I could not believe the size of the gunk that came out of her ear!! No wonder she couldn't hear!!
