Clearwater Beach day trip?

The Dh, Ds 10 and DD 5 and I will be making our first trip to the world Aug 2 -9. My Dh really wants to spend a day at the beach, and I would like for the kids to see the ocean as well. I have heard and read several things about the gulf side being better than the pacific side. I was planning to go to Cocoa as it seems to be closer but now am leaning toward clearwater. Any advice out there? How far is it? Directions? Things to do? Wave runner rentals or dolpin cruises, etc? We are flying in so we plan to rent a car just for our day trip. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

We stopped at Daytona the last day of our trip. The entire family loved it. There was so much to do. We were able to rent 2 lounge chairs, an umbrella, table and a boogie board for $30 for the day. There was golf cart rentals $40 an hour, ATV rentals, parasailing...just so much to do, not to mention that the water was 80 degrees!!!

We did a day trip to Clearwater Beach last July. The beach was gorgeous and not crowded at all. I took about an hour and a half to get there. (sorry i cant remember the directions). We didnt do any other activities but lay on the beach and swim, so i cant help you there. I think this year we are going to try Siesta Key (Sarasota) which is about 30 minutes south of Clearwater. Saw a special on the travel channel about this beach, and now I just have to see it! It looks great. DH says he's up for a road trip so we'll see.

We are going to Clearwater Beach in 6 days. We are staying 3 nights there then driving to WDW. Tapa is about 15 minutes south, we may ventrue down there one day. We plan to lounge on the beach & recover form our 4:45 am flight. Have a great trip!
