Not sure if it’s still like this but the NYC clubs and restaurants we hung out in the ‘90s usually had bathroom attendants. Sometimes they would hand you towels to dry your hands but that part didn’t always expect tip. You were definitely expected to tip if you used their grooming supplies. This is where they made their money. They had cologne/perfume, mouthwash, brushes, hairspray, floss, deodorant, contact solution, etc…I remember going to this hotel (owned by a Hong Kong company) in mainland China where there was an attendant just to hand over paper towels to people washing hands in the lobby's bathroom. That was fine. But on the same trip we stayed at the company's flagship hotel in Hong Kong. I had to go while our party was checking in and they too had an attendant. But once he was done he put his hand out like he wanted a tip, but I had no local money yet. And in any case I'm not sure what kind of tip he expected from a teen.
I suppose that also allowed them to monitor the state of the facilities and have them cleaned often.
THAT'S iT!!!!!.. I returned from my free room over nighter and wife asks if I encountered any prostitutes... WHAT?...yeah... this guy sits next to my wife, and my wife has a friendly vibe and this guy shares that a man in the bathroom is complaining about his prostate problems at the urinal.... wife hears prostitute.... makes sense... women don't deal with urinating all over the bathroom floor... one casino had a young attendant complain about the lack of..... So they began to put pads on the floor....you never hear an old attendant complain ... they understandWould you like to edit that?
Well...if the first thing you see... like the rest area west of 4 corner... Kramer junction.....is a big sign about rattlesnakesAs for Public bathrooms, let's talk about rest areas. California - yeesh. Only stop at the one in Baker in an emergency. In fact most of the ones in CA are prison-esque. .compared to the ones in the CA rest areas anyway.

When you said, "public", I thought you meant rest stops. Buc-ees etc. are just open to the public - Buc-ees is maintaining them so kudos to them.

In stark contrast are the ones in AZ and especially UT. You could hold a dinner party in a men's rest room in a Utah rest area...compared to the ones in the CA rest areas anyway.
Prostitute issues???![]()
Well, it could be worse. My daughter moved to Germany a year ago and is ranting about pay toilets. There are a few places that have free toilets, like the train and bus station. And so far in her experience, the pay toilets are no cleaner than the free ones.
BumpDon't they have (free to use) sidewalk urinals in Germany? I'll just link to this blog post. I was going to directly post the image, but it's got a shadow drawing that might be a little too anatomically correct. It's not horrible, but I'll refrain from directly posting the image, even though it's considered appropriate for sidewalks in Germany. This post is about women complaining that they're being discriminated against because they don't have an equivalent available.

They may have those in Berlin. My daughter in a smaller town in the former East Germany 100 miles from Berlin. Great article. These urinals were put in because men were literally urinating on the sides of churches......particularly after drinking too much at soccer games.
