Hi,

We're going next Easter and have booked a flight + car with Charter Travel (Virgin).

I've just noticed that the small print for the hire car states that you must have a clean licence. Unfortunately i've just picked up 3 points for speeding (first traffic offence for 25 years). Does anyone know if this will give me a problem when I pick up the hire car?

Thanks in advance.

Ian

My Db has had points on his license and still hired a car in Florida :D never had a problem and hired from different companies.

My firends both had points on their licenses (more than you) last year and neither had a problem. Don't worry too much.

Thanks for your replies.
I feel a bit better now, one less thing to worry about.......

I have points on my license, not my fault naturally :)

Never had any problems.

Yes, me too.
I was not going fast, just still accelerating on the motorway at 98 MPH :-)(

It will be no problem, as they normally only ask for your picture part of your driving licence at the check in desk, or as we use Hertz Gold Club, just show the card and the picture DL at the key desk.

I have 8 points on my licence (i was always in a rush ok!!) and i have never had problems with car hire- I dont think americans know how our point system works and as long as your legaly intitled to drive in the UK you can hire a car in America!

As has been said, you should be fine, but if you are worried, just call up the company or drop them an e-mail to confirm. I assume if you are going through Virgin you will be using Dollar car hire? If so, on our last Florida trip I e-mailed them (wanted to know if we'd have a CD player or cassette), and they replied within a day of me sending it. You should be fine, but if you want piece of mind, then get it an e-mail from them then at least you have proof that they said it was fine ;)

In all honesty, how many people haven't got points these days? The majority of people wouldn't be able to hire a car would they?

I think they mean clean as in not having been banned or something.

My DH has 3 points and when we went to Florida last year, Alamo didn't even ask to look at the 'paper' bit of his license, just took a photocopy of his photocard!

Never had a problem ~ All of the times we have hired a car I have had points on my licence

Thanks for all your replies.
Most re-assuring.

I am a bit reluctant to contact the car hire company beforehand in case they decide to increase the cost of the insurance 'just for the hell of it'.

I would rather wait until picking up the car and hopefully they won't notice the points!!!

Thanks again.

Ian

Contact them by 'phone with a general query - don't give your name or booking reference.

It only applies if your a serious crim like drink-driving etc. Speeding points are fine

Agree with MKmarty, I handle 10 -12 car hire bookings a week! the points are not fine if they are linked to a drink/drugs endorsement but are always ok for a speeding fine!

I have been banned for driving twice in the UK, once for drink driving ( not proud ) for 18 months and once for 12 months.
I always hire a car in the US with no problems, they have never asked about points or bans.
