So, in the NHL, they award the Con Smythe trophy for the player who was the most outstanding in the 4 rounds of the play-offs. This year it went to Ducks' goaltender Giguere - AND THE FANS BOOED! How low can you go?!?!? sheesh!

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU !!!!.....Congrats to the Devils....But showed alot of NO CLASS when they did that....Giguere deserved it most of all.....Its an award for MVP for the WHILE PLAYOFFS just not the finals people.....WHat a FINALS !!!!......Couldnt have asked for anything more.....well maybe a triple overtime eh ????.......OTTAWA IN 2004 !!!!!!!!!!!

And I'm sure the same would have happened if a player from the Devils would have been awarded the same award at The Pond in Anaheim.

Good point Mr. Mouse…hey at least New Jersey fans don’t riot in the streets after a victory…right?

Hey didn’t the Diamond Back organization play the song New York, New York when the DB’s beat the Yankee’s in the World Series? Just to rub it in?

It could happen anywhere..

Yes, it *could* happen anywhere...and that's a shame. Too bad NJ fans couldn't set a standard for fans with class.

I posted this on the Stanley Cup finals thread. I am NOT a NJ Devils fan but a fan of the Philadelphia Flyers and hockey in general.

"Although the boos from the NJ fans seemed uncalled for, you have to attend a Stanley Cup Finals game to experience a, sometimes, once in a lifetime experience. You are sucked up into an emotional rollercoaster and if your team happens to win, the euphoria is mind shattering. At the moment the Conn Smythe trophy was awarded, the Devils fans, riding that sea of emotion, felt that Martin Brodeur should have received the award. Even Giguere said "I'm not surprised they booed me," . "In New Jersey, they probably wanted their guy winning it and this is very understandable."

Personally, I feel that Giguere was the MVP of the playoffs but Brodeur certainly had the numbers and the Cup to back up his credentials.

Jiggy finished with .945 save %, 1.62 Goals against average and 5 shutouts.

Martin finished with .934 save %, 1.65 Goals against average and 7 shutouts

Not Too Shabby!

I'm not making excuses for NJ fans but I would cut them some slack on this one.

Just a few more things to throw in the pot.

20,000 Devil fans - 2 Duck fans (the ones that got engaged)
home game Stanley Cup win
7th game of the series
only the 5th time in NHL history that a member of the losing* team was awarded the Conn Smythe trophy. (I would like to know what happened the 4 other times)

Put that in the mix and you get boo’s.

..OK and maybe add 5 beers per fan. (I’m sure that helps too)

*please insert “team that didn’t win” if the words “losing team” offends you. (you are right let’s start setting an example..right now)

I agree with what Charlie and Bigdude said.

But I also wanted to point out that Ducks fans did their fair share of booing everytime former Duck, Friesen, even touched the puck during the games played at the pond.

I never saw it as booing Giggy, I saw it as booing the decision. After the intial announcement the booing stopped and people clapped for him as he accepted the award and skated off the ice. I saw it first hand because I was there and didn't boo BTW.

I have to agree with Big Dude - You have to be at a Stanley Cup game to understand - the adrenalin, knowing you are one of the few that are actually THERE to see your team win - It just carries you away for days....

That being said, I just wanted to point out that the NJ Devils (team that is) showed class when they applauded Jiggy for winning. Great sportsmanship -

To all that said you have to be there to understand:::::

I have been to ALOT of Stanley Cup Finals games.....Being born canadian we had season tickets to the Montreal Canadians....I have been to ALL of their cup wins as long as I was alive...born 1977....I have been to about 150 playoff games....and never once....well thats pushing....but not very often did I ever hear these fans BOOOOO any of the opposing fans or members of their team if they won an award or anything of that sort....I know they have done some things in the past.....But before all you Devils fans go saying we have the cup...Blah...Blah...Blah.....and that how a US team won the cup...remember this...92% of the NHL is Canadian.....90% of the Devils are probably Canadian...and before all the 3 cups in 9 years talk...The Montreal Canadains have 24 cups.....Thats alot more than 3 in 9 years....Not ragging anyone PLEASE do not take this wrong way.....I know from 1st hand experience of the Devils system and they are FIRST CLASS !!!!.....I played in their farm system when I was growing up and still playing...SO I LOVE their organization VERY VERY much...Oh an the other 4 people who won the Conn Smythe for losing teams....They are in the Hall of Fame who ever where they are now....and we are not....and 4 of the 5 who won it were GOALTENDERS.....the last being Ron Hextall.....Thanx for listening to my rant....again this is not pointed at any one person....just venting.....Thanx...Have A Disney Day.....:smooth: :smooth:

First, I have been to a WCF game & my sister was at game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final & when the Devils won, nobody booed them. So I completely understand the atmosphere.

Second, however petty the in game booing may sometimes be, there's a big difference between that & booing someone's accomplishment after the fact. It's one thing if it's a goon that's planted a dirty hit that lays out your star player for a couple weeks & then he gets the Lady Byng. It's another to boo a guy's award just because you like your guy better.

Third, trying to compare the reactions of Anaheim fans, most of which probably couldn't tell you which seed their team came into the playoffs as, to the reactions from fans in an area where the fans should be a lot more knowledgable is a tad misleading.

Fourth, I think you are comparing apples to oranges with the riots. It's a totally different crowd & mentality when you're talking about a sport like basketball. When the Stars won the Cup in 99, the place went nuts & the parade was a blast...and friendly to boot. It was a completely different scenario when the Cowboys won the Superbowl in 92.

Fifth, while Giguere & Broduer's stats were pretty similar, there is no doubt that Giguere carried the team for the most part & that's what the Conn Smythe is all about.

Sixth, I'm obviously not comdemning every single Devils fan, just the ones that were booing...and there were an awful lot of boos. :(

And finally, the Devils fans screwed up in their duty to boo Bettman. ;)
