I'd just like to say that it hurts me to think that bands like Def Leppard, Poison, Motley Crue, Springsteen, etc. are now considered "classic" rock.

Ugh...I'm old.

"Classic" Rock does NOT = OLDIES.

Back when I was in my late teens and early 20s, we had the "Classic Rock" station. This was to differentiate this type of music from punk, pop, funk, alternative rock, etc. Even then (in the early 80s), it was called Classic Rock.

I remember when I was a kid and my mom had to listen to an "oldies" radio station to hear music from her youth.

Be glad we're not "oldies" (we're "classic") AND that we can still hear our music on everyday radio stations (albiet on "80s Friday" or something :) )

This song just kills me, for exactly the reason the OP mentions. :teeth: Motley Crue and Poison should never be on VH1 "classic"!

Debbie just hit the wall
She never had it all
One Prozac a day
Husband's a CPA
Her dreams went out the door
When she turned 24.
Only been with one man
What happened to her plan?

She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her (kidz bop way is"she was gonna shake it fast.)
On the hood of Whitesnake’s car
Her yellow SUV is now the enemy
Looks at her average life
And nothin, has been...
ALRIGHT, since

Bruce springsteen, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she's uncool
'Cause she's still preoccupied

Woo Hoo Hooooo!

She’s seen all the classics
She knows every line
Breakfast Club,
Pretty In Pink
Even St. Elmo's Fire
She rocked out to Whaam!
Not a big Limp Bizkit fan
Thought she'd get a hand
On a member of Duran Duran

Where's the mini-skirt made of snakeskin
And who's the other guy that's singing in Van Halen?
When did reality become T.V.?
What ever happened to sitcoms, game shows,

She hates time, make it stop
When did Motley Crue become classic rock? (classic rock)
And when did Ozzy become an actor?
Please make this stop, stop, stop!(TICK TICK)AND BRING BACK

Springsteen I would consider classic rock. The others you listed are "80's hair bands. Considering that all have been around for at least 20 years, I would definitely say they are old school if not classic--although to me Bruce is still the Boss.

Music is cyclical. Over the next few years you'll see some of the same sounds as we heard in the mid-late 70's and early '80's, minus the disco, based on the more recent signings of new bands by various labels. Bluesy, guitar driven rock is coming back, and there will be more and more females in rock bands--and not just as singers.

A handfull of new and newer bands to keep an ear out for: Silvertide, Halestorm (who I think are the next *big* thing), Black Stone Cherry, Neverset, After the Ashes, Flyleaf, October Fall, More, and Headrush.

The classic rock radio stations have being calling it that for over 10 years now, as long as they don't call them the oldies!

Younger people should really listen to the lyrics of "classic rock" before they choose a song for a performance :goodvibes

A few weeks ago, I went to watch my neice at a cheerleading competition. Imagine my surprise when I saw a group of very young girls (about 7ish) performing to ZZ Top. Didn't realize young girls were looking for "nothing but Tush"

The coach must be too young to remember ZZ Top and failed to listen to the words. But us 70's old fogeys sure do remember that song :teeth:

You know you are getting old when the music your parents forbid you to listen to now is playing as "easy listening" in the elevators :confused3

Lyrics to the cheerleading song:
I been up, I been down.
Take my word, my way around.
I ain’t askin’ for much.
I said, lord, take me downtown,
I’m just lookin’ for some tush.

I been bad, I been good,
Dallas, texas, hollywood.
I ain’t askin’ for much.
I said, lord, take me downtown,
I’m just lookin’ for some tush.

Take me back way back home,
Not by myself, not alone.
I ain’t askin’ for much.
I said, lord, take me downtown,
I’m just lookin’ for some tush.

When I think of "classic rock" I think of CCR, LedZep, stuff from the 60s & 70s -- not my beloved 80s!!

I almost cried a few years ago -- I heard "Jersey Girl" on LITE-FM. :guilty:

I guess I've moved on. I can still enjoy the 80's music that was worth listening to--not much was to be honest--long hair and a pretty face was about all it took...and Beavis and Butthead killed probably the most musically talented band of the '80's.

The 90's brought some great new groups.

And this decade also has some exceptional bands--and a lot of junk. I know a lot of them won't be around any longer than Firehouse was, but I enjoy them now, and know that next decade will bring along even more new great talent.

Anne, have you ever heard the song "American Hair Band" by Tuff? It's basically a parody of all the hair bands -- pretty funny.

I agree that there's always going to be something new. I like a lot of the stuff out now as well (rock moreso than pop...)

I see no reason the bands and songs form the 80's not to be called classic rock once that decade is far enough in the past.

It's not like people the glam folks like Bowie and Cooper didn't also have quite eye rolling image at the time. Most of the people in the 80's were also much better musicians that most of the folks in the 60's and 70's.

I agree with this.

This I can't agree with. Every decade has had both extraordinary musicians, and pitiful bands with a good PR machine--or a once in a lifetime hook.

The 70's in particular had some incredibly talented and highly influential musicians.
