Classes offered from Ritz stores, worth it?

Buying the camera I want locally though Ritz means paying an additional $50 over online, but they give 18 free classes if you have purchased a camera through them.

This seems like a pretty good deal compared to prices of other local photography classes and they do offer a 4 hour class on DSLR which I really feel I need.

Has anyone taken these and what did you think?

It is my understanding it is designed for someone who does not know a shutter from a megapixel. It is very basic.

Well, they said some of theirs are basic and some are more advanced. I am still quite new to the DSLR world, so that would be helpful.

If you go be prepared for a sales pitch. I went to a lighting class they offered last year and the instructor spent half the class showing us the different reflectors sold in the store.

Ah, I see.....I wondered what their angle was.....that would make sense.

I took a few classes and found them to be pretty basic, which was great for me at the time because my understanding (or lack thereof) of the concepts presented were at that level then. I think the value will vary by student and by instructor. The instructor I had was very good and had an interest beyond just pushing more merchandise out the door - he organized regular contests and road trips etc. in addition to being a salesperson.

Well......I did some digging today and it turns out that Wolf/Ritz just restructured after bankruptcy and will be closing about 2/3 of their stores. So, those classes may not even be offered anymore, or at least not at a convenient location.

I am thinking I may be better off with some hours spent in some quality books on learning how to use my camera.
