Hi there! I'm considering purchasing a DVC membership and have been researching the options. I just spoke with someone directly from Disney about purchasing a direct contract. I mentioned resale and he seemed quite agitated, which I totally understand, he doesn't make money if I buy resale. He made resale sound horrible. He said there's no perks and you can't book anywhere other than specific DVC resorts. I just want to confirm that.

If we purchase resale we can stay at all the DVC locations, right? That's all I care about. I don't need perks. Saving on the purchase is good enough. I don't need to travel the world either. I'm perfectly happy with spending all my future vacations in Florida! Ha!

Here's what I have my eye on right now, just to give you an idea of my intentions.... a resale contract at BLT at 160 points, taking a trip every other year, hoping for a 1 bedroom Theme Park View, 6 days in October. I think that's doable if I book at the 11 month mark (please correct me if I'm wrong). That's 287 points every other year, with a buffer if point amounts go up. However, I think there are times when we'd like to stay somewhere else. We would like to stay in an Animal Kingdom Savannah View room at some point.

Any advice on this??

The DVC guide got upset because they do not get paid if you buy resale. Buy your favorite after research resort resale with the correct UY if possible and if you want the perks, you can buy a small contract later direct.

I asked him about that. He actually said that buying a contract with Disney directly will not entitle me to perks, that I would be "flagged in the system as a resale customer either way". I wasn't sure there was any truth to that, though.

It may not be long before Disney puts a point minimum (larger than 25 points) to get the perks (which are also subject to change). But right now it does appear to be a viable loophole they have left open. He has an ax to grind and I would not put much faith in the truthfulness until an official declaration comes from Disney. Nothing is true until the internet says so. ;)

Good to know! I'll keep an eye out for any changes. Thank you for the response!

You said everything you needed to say here. You should buy resale.

This is an outright lie. Regardless of whether you purchase resale or direct, you will have a "guide" attached to your account. You should request a different one and when they ask why, you should tell them about this bold faced lie.

It is true that your resale points are resale points and cannot be used to book certain types of accommodations even if you own some direct points. The direct points will allow you to attend events and buy whatever tickets may be available.

Resale buyers can no longer use their points to make reservations in the Concierge Collection, the Disney Collection (non-DVC Disney resorts at Disneyland and Walt Disney World as well as the Disney Cruise Line), or the Adventurer Collection.

Absolutely not true (right now). I purchased resale first and added on a small point contract after the new changes, for a specific resort home advantage, not just for benefits. As soon as my direct purchase was in the system I had full member benefits, can book member events, purchase Gold AP's and even the membership card on my resale contract was changed to a blue member card. I can't use the resale points for cruises or some other things but I do get full benefits.

I'd be willing to bet he didn't lie but he framed it so you clearly got the wrong impression. It's sounds like he technically told you accurately. You won't have perks, you will be flagged, etc. But you'll be able to book the same at DVC resorts and you can use BVTC and RCI and I don't see any of that changing. And if you buy resale and add 25 points retail, you'll have ALL of the perks that are reasonable to use at a considerable savings. Taking away the ability to trade for cruises and the like does members a favor.

While it's correct that you can stay at all DVC resorts with a resale purchase, it's getting more difficult to switch to non-home resorts at the 7-month window during popular DVC timeframes. Thus, choose your home resort carefully. Now, buying direct certainly won't change this dilemma either.

To recap, if you buy resale you can:
- book your resort 11 months in advance
- book any other DVC resort 7 months in advance
- use your points to trade into RCI exchanges (not a great value)
- use the Top of the World lounge at BLT when staying on points

You can NOT:
- book members special events (nights in the parks for members only, members cruise, Soaring tour)
- get annual pass discounts
- get merchandising and food discounts
- use the DVC members lounge at Epcot
- use your points to book non DVC resorts, ABD or cruises (an awful value anyway)

I may have forgotten some of the minor ones.
You get all the benefits if you buy a 25 points contracts, the AP discount being perhaps the only that can make a financial difference (while my favorite is the DVC lounge at Epcot, but that is not guaranteed to stay for long anyway)

All of the "special" events for qualified members were added during the past two years by the new DVC management, IMO as an inducement to buy direct. Should management change again, those perks could go away.

If I purchase 100 points resale at AKL and then purchase 25 points direct at CCV (or whichever one is currently available), will I get to book either one at 11 months in advance? Or can I only book where my majority points are/ or where my original/first points were purchased? How does that work?
