One of the DuPont family members purchased it in the early 20th century and basically developed it into what it is today. He did in the 1950's and it became a foundation that is open to the public (for a daily entrance fee or an annual membership) year-round. Here's the Longwood Gardens home page and a wikipedia page.

Incredible pictures!
It is hard to believe that the grounds were actually part of a residence! How great that it continues to be a place for so many to go enjoy the beauty of the property.
