Citricos....a review...the food, the wine, Navan and a cast of thousands

WOW!!! What a great review and just in time. Dh and I are going for short trip at the end of April and our only 2 ADRs are for Citricos and V&A! I'm really looking forward to both of them!! Thanks! :thumbsup2

Glad to see you guys back in the saddle again!!
Got to ask tho--that bone-in Ribeye looks like it had an awful amout of fat. Are my eyes playing tricks??

The fat is what MAKES the rib eye.....YUMMY.....

Ribeyes are definitely a fatty cut of beef, but we believe them to be most flavorful.

Ribeyes are actually the steak of choice in our home, and the fattier the better!~

I have been a lurker of your reviews up until now. Was delighted to see Flying Fish and now found Citricos... Citricos is now on my list for September trip. Thank you.

Ahhh Short ribs I love making them at home and really LOVE them when I am out. It is one of those foods that you take a bite of and just sit there and think Oh my God this is so sinful. Velvety..delish. Thank you

Its great to hear from the two of you again. Grand Marnier is a big favorite in our house. Straight, in cheesecake, over crepes etc..One trip we took BC (before children) was to Amsterdam , awesome city, but I digress there was a carnival going on and one of the booths served hot cocoa with shots of Grand Marnier  :cloud9:  It tasted like a tootsie roll. We made it every since then. A Grand Marnier flight sounds awesome. Thanks so much for sharing.

We missed you guys! I was getting ready to randomly knock on doors on Federal Hill looking for you guys!

Do you get your ribeyes at Southside Meat market? Those guys rock!

Great review, the chef made great choices for you:worship:

The best ribeyes are well marbled. What does that mean? Lots of fatty goodness mixed in :) My favorite cut as well.

I'm so glad you're back!!! Everytime I read a new review of yours it convinces me to try someplace new at WDW. Of course we can only have one "nice" dinner a trip- having 3 kids babysat is a fortune :scared:

Sue....

You are from Raleigh? We were there last year....

Had a WONDERFUL meal at The Chef's Table at Second Empire in Raleigh.

YUMMO!

We're actually from NYC- moved to Raleigh in August. I have only been to the Tavern at Second Empire- how beautiful is that "house"? We love the bluefin Tacos on the Tavern menu so much that we've never ventured into the real restaurant. Guess where I think we're going for my birthday June 9th?

Next time you're coming to RDU let me know- we'd love to show you & Kevin our new neck of the woods! You won't believe the house you can get for the money down here! We live in a new house on the 3rd T-box of a country club now... in NY we had 1700 sq feet and were struggling! And it being 82 degrees in february don't hurt!!!:woohoo:

Will you have us back?

Yes! It has been a long time coming, but well worth the wait... welcome back, gentlemen!
DH and I will be eating at Citricos for the first time in September. :goodvibes

We are also eating at Narcoossee's and Yachtsman and California Grill so I am headed back to some of your other reports to re-read your entertaining reviews!

Wonderful reviews. I have missed seeing your posts. Welcome back!

I have really missed your posts, your review of V & A made me book it for our wedding meal. It was absolutely wonderful a completely unique experience, We did the Chef's Menu in the main dining room!

As for Citricos we didn't go for dinner last time, but after this review, I will certainly be making an ADR for the New Year.

Glad to have you back:hug:

While we both felt the Chef would pick the Foie Gras Raviolis and the Ahi Tuna, there was something on the menu that caught our eye, so we requested a third appetizer (of course this is just the beginning of the decadence that caused me to gain 6 pounds in a week):scared1:

Kevin and I have a wonderful recipe that we make at home which is a wild mushroom risotto, so we wanted to see how Citricos made crispy risotto, in an effort to steal the idea for home.

Well, were we surprised when Gwen returned to our table.

Arancini
citricos031608-004.jpg

Crispy Risotto with Italian Sausage, Quattro Formaggi, and White Truffle Aioli

translation please....
a fried 4 cheese and sausage risotto ball

As it turns out, this is something that has been on Citricos' Menu for awhile. We didn't expect what was brought to us, for some reason we had in our minds the idea of a "side dish" sort of offering where the risotto was crispy but still sort of in a "ricey" pile (gotta line that scientific talk eh?).

Well, aside from our mindset being wrong this trio of risotto balls were great. The outside of them were nice and crispy while the inside had a perfect consistency. The Italian sausage was chopped up almost like ground beef and mixed into the risotto along with the cheeses. The White Truffle Aioli added just a hint of a bite to the dish, while the balsamic drizzle assisted in the acidity portion.

We're really glad we decided to try the Arancini.

Next up….Salads and cheeses…..

Loving your review. When we ate at Citricos a couple of years ago, I ordered the Arancini and was quite surprised at what came to the table. I was expecting exactly what you described. However, they were delicious. I actually found them again at a place just a couple of miles from here.

Well, as we pondered the next offerings and what might come forth from Chef Eddie Mendoza, Gwen walks up to the table carrying nothing less than our 2 most favorite culinary offers in the World and I do NOT mean WDW. :rotfl2:

Bone-In Ribeye
citricos031608-007.jpg

Wood-Roasted Spainish Onions, fingerling potatoes, Lemon Rosemary Butter and a veal glace.

DOES THIS NOT LOOK LIKE A FLINTSTONE piece of meat?!?!? :rotfl: :rotfl:

I'll leave Kevin to explain my "mis-step" with Gwen on the wine offering to go with this dish.....

BUT....so....after talking WAY too much:mic: , I finally cut into this gigantic cut of beef, which is the ONLY steak we serve here at the "Manor"

I was dismayed...it was more than medium...and appeared medium well.

At this point the K-Man is blaming my fat mouth for the reason the beef is over cooked.....as meat has a tendacy to continue to cook...after it is taken off the heat.

Well, by a short piece of saving grace....as it turns out, I cut deeper into this piece of Fred Flinstone meat and it is absolutely medium rare in the center. PERFECTO!

At this point, I am concentrating on the meat, and forgetting the potatoes and onions!

next up....the second Main Course!

I'm really hoping this makes it onto the regular menu as after reading your review and seeing this I had to switch a night to make sure we hit Citricos.

Ty
