Cirque de Soleil La Nouba to end?

I stand corrected. I guess I was taking a large, broad view of the show....same theater, same music, same general concept. But the changes you mentioned have been noticed by us as well. And often, and I believe certainly the case here, the energy of the show is changed when performers/acts change. Sometimes for the better. Sometimes not.
I agree that some of the changes can be good. For example, I think the current Rolla Bolla act is even better than the original Chair Stacking act.

I'm a musician and I can only imagine how difficult it must be to play the same exact set, day after day, year after year, without losing passion and enthusiasm. The same thought process would apply to all performers.

Not sure about the acrobats but I'm pretty sure the musicians are (inevitably) on auto-pilot. But they're undoubtedly very, very good at faking it.

In the book Mozart in the Jungle, the author says she played in the pit band of Les Miz for years, with the music memorized, earplugs inserted, and actually reading magazines and doing crossword puzzles *while playing*.

Long story short ... "It's a living."

It would be interesting to see a show developed based on Disney itself. Cirque has done great with representing The Beatles, old school film with Iris, etc. So to see a show based on Disney history, animation, etc. would be a lot of fun!

Also-there is a marching arts show called Blast! that did some dates at WDW, that just completed a run in Japan of a show based on Disney music that could be a lot of fun to replace it with as well.

One of the comments in that article puts it best for me: never saw it, but seeing so much of it around property really makes it feel truly a part of the Disney experience.

I enjoy a good Cirque show when they're available, but don't do re-dos of them, although I did randomly in the spirit of a bachelorette party where we picked the one the last number of people had seen (fair). I think it'd generate a lot of demand if they added a new show.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's some ESPN-based monstrosity.

It does to me. I was a percussionist all through school and seriously considered trying out for Phantom Regiment, Sky Ryders or Blue Devils (Yeah. I dated myself with that Sky Ryders reference). :D

I'm old, too. I marched with Southwind in 1993. That was the first year they moved to Division 1 (or whatever the top class is now called). I still have the soundtrack from the Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman movie "Far and Away" burned into my brain from that summer.

We toured the eastern third of the country, all the way from Pennsylvania to Florida. It was awesome and horrible, depending on which memories I access. The awesome part was performing into front of crowds as large as 20,000 and recording a carol for the DCI Christmas CD. The horrible part was so many hours on buses and sleeping in high school gymnasium floors.

My DCI experience did help me get a position in "Magic Music Days" when I worked at Disney World.

Now if we can get all the corps that march in DCI Orlando to do a parade at Epcot or MK we would be all set.

And bring back Future Corps in Epcot too. Every now and then gotta pull up YouTube to watch them play Make His Praise Glorious or Malagueña.

Minnesota Brass Inc alum here. Go Band!!!!!!!

Someone posted that they wanted to go, but never got around to it, and that Disney time is valuable. These have been my sentiments. My first four year run (97-98-99-00) - my husband and I chose to ignore it due to price. Too many other things to choose from. You've got to pic Disney attraction battles. Yet, I still wanted to see it. Then my last visit in Oct 2015 I again, chose not to put it on my to do list. I did so because you always think there is more time. Well, now there isn't more time. I've always wanted to see it and now I am going to fit it in to this upcoming Sept 2017 visit. I'm glad for the notice.

I've seen La Nouba at least 20 times, from all different parts of the theatre. It's a well-designed theatre that really does not have a bad seat. There are six seating categories:
la-nouba-seating.jpg

  • Golden Circle: $148.04/$122.48 (ages 3-9)
  • Front and Center: $132.06/$108.63
  • Category 1: $105.44/$85.20
  • Category 2: $82.50/$68.16
  • Category 3: $79.88/$63.90
  • Category 4 (Limited View): $62.84/$51.12
With the thrust stage, being right in the center is not necessary. And the there are only 8 rows in the front section and 11 rows in the upper section. So, no seat is that far from the stage. My advice would be to go with either Category 1 or Category 2 seats.

Now that Cirque de Soleil is closing, I am hoping that a Broadway type theater will replace it. I would love to see Disney's catalog of Broadway Shows in Disney Springs. Do you think Broadway at the Springs is feasible? Would you like to see it happen? What show should open first?

I don't believe this is in the works for a few reasons.

First, the Orlando Sentinel article about "La Nouba" closing has a quote from a Cirque du Soleil spokesperson. In regard to the future, she says: "There will be news to come." I take that statement to be confirmation that Cirque du Soleil is staying at Walt Disney World. They will want to re-use the theatre.

Second, the La Nouba theatre has a thrust stage, where seats curve around the stage. (See seating chart above.) All of Disney's Broadway shows were created for proscenium theatres, where the seats directly face the stage. Converting the theatre to a proscenium would result in lots of wasted space. Re-imaging Disney's Broadway musicals to work on a thrust stage would be enormously expensive. Any re-imagined show would require completely new sets.

Next, I don't think Orlando has the talent pool necessary to support a repertory theatre company. Here, I'm talking about the performers in the ensemble...not the leads. In order to rotate through various musicals, you need actors that are extremely versatile. A repertory company might fly in Los Angeles or New York, because actors could potentially find other work if they weren't in the current production. But, I can't see that happening in Orlando.

Finally, the Walt Disney Theater in Downtown Orlando is almost brand new. Despite the name, it was built with mostly public money. For it to remain viable, it must continue to be the home for touring Broadway productions. Disney Theatrical is a big part of that touring show market. Any attempt to move their touring shows from Downtown Orlando to Disney Springs would be a PR nightmare.
