circuit city to liquidate inventory?

I was at circuit city last night looking at computers since my broke. They said that when liquidators come in, the prices go up to make it look like you're getting a good deal, when you really aren't. The salesman also said there aren't good deals until the last week when the good stuff is gone.
We ended up buying at best buy instead.

Ours is already closed, but what the PP said is true--even though it sounds like a sales gimmick.

From what I understand is that a company is doing the liquidation and that company is buying everything in warehouse, etc.

The only items that have a potential for good deals are the items that are currently in the stores, and maybe only the ones out of boxes and displayed.

DS was asking me about it this morning.

Stores have tried that in Ma but they got caught

Our store had 20% off all movies and CD's, and then 10% off the original price of everything else. Not a huge sale yet here in Wichita Falls.

We were shopping for a particular TV when Circuit City went through the first round of store closures.

The location near us that was closing had a "Blow-Out Deal" on an out of box floor model. The salesman said there was no way we'd find a better deal on that TV and he was sure if we didn't buy on the spot it would be gone... one only at that price of course.

We drove over to the other CC location where they had the exact TV, new in the box, for less with a promo they were running.

So we shopped around some more and ended up paying $200+ less than that first won't last, closeout, one only, Blow-Out Deal price elsewhere.

Is it possible that there will be some deals? Sure. But I'd advise doing your homework to verify whether they're all that good or not.

My husband is on his way there..... loaded with $80.00 of gift certs... I hope that they accept them before the liquidators come in!

I will report back later!

My husband drove past CC today, and he said the traffic getting into that end of the mall was incredible. I doubt there'll be much left after this weekend.

I have gone through a couple of store closings. The liquidators buy inventory that the manufacturer will not take back. most electronics manufacturers (bose for example) do not want their products sold below msrp so they will take back most inventory. the liquidators then return all of the remaining inventory's prices to msrp or higher and the going out of business sale -10% is then taken off. It is unbelievable how much inventory is sold at the 10% discount. People assume that it must be a good deal since they are going out of business. after sales die down- a couple of weeks maybe they raise the discount to 20% and so on.
We sold half of our inventory that first week. The liquidators made a killing. Items that were on sale the week before going out of business for $125 we sold maybe 1 or 2. when the going out of business sale started they were marked at $200 and 10% discount, we sold 20 the first weekend. go figure?
The liquidators also bring in their own merchandise after a while. you will see items that were never sold at cc, so buyer beware.:crazy2:

We ran into the same thing when our local CC closed before Christmas. It seemed like everytime we went in there thinking we would get a good deal, the prices really weren't better than anywhere else. Then I saw a news story about it where they compared some store's Black Friday ad prices to the "Going Out of Business Sale" at CC - and the BF prices were WWAAAAAYYYY less than the CC prices. I think people just see "Going Out of Business" and they automatically think they are getting a great deal, when they really aren't.

The Circuit City in Bloomington, IL is doing 10% off everything, 20% off DVDs and music, and 30% off cables and mobile audio accessories.

I bought a Kung Fu Panda Tag book for $7.17 (reg 13.99, $9.99 on sale at Toys R Us) and a Wall E Leapster game for $11.79 or so (reg $24.99, $17.99 on sale at Toys R Us). They wouldn't take my $3 and $4 off coupons, but the prices were about as good or better and I still have the coupons for other books/games. They also had a few Disney Princess Leapster games (but I already had that one).

I also bought two DVDs.. The Sesame Street movie was usually $6.99 and I got 20% off and The Parent Trap 1 & 2 came out to $7.99 (both movies are in the same box).

this is exactly right.

don't expect to get any deals for exactly this reason.

Compare prices on Amazon to make sure you're not getting ripped off.

liquidators. As someone else said, the MO of the liquidators is to mark things way up, then put up a sale sign, taking them down to the original price. Everything I've read said to stay far, far away from this.

If you buy something that doesn't work, you're out of luck. They don't have to accept any returns or exchanges. Depending on what you buy, the manufacturer might not even have to honor the warrantee!

I'm sad they didn't stick around another month...until I can get a new computer. I will not give Best Buy a red cent of my money. It's a long story, but I got taken by them twice. Be very, very, very careful about spending money with them! They aren't above selling used merchandise as new...and their business practices are whatever the law will allow. If your state had good consumer protection laws you may be fine, but if you live in a state where there's no protection, they will get away with anything they can!

I guess WalMart will get my business. Imagine that!

We have a $100 gift card to CC. DH is going to go tomorrow to use it. Are they still accepting gift cards?

I now buy direct from Dell. Best Buy doesn't get our money either. We have had MANY bad experiences with them (takes me awhile to learn my lesson I guess!). Our favorite was the "NEW" computer we got that was full of the previous buyers information. Not only was this a returned computer that was sold as new, but it contained tons of personal and financial information on the guy. It took us over three hours to complete this return and convince them that we were not going to be paying a restocking fee!!!:confused3

Yes, my husband was able to use his GC's today.

He said the place was a wreck.. total zoo, no help etc.

He bought cables for the HDTV we are getting, 30% off.... and go the kids a wii game...

Prices are 30% off full price.. in most cases, not a great deal.
