Hi!

We our planning our first family vacation for October this year! We plan on trying a variety of foods (we got the dining plan and plan on enjoying the F&W festival foods as well), but I am severely allergic to cinnamon. Other than the obvious foods, is there anything I should avoid that I may not think would have cinnamon in it?

TIA :)

I really know very little about cinnamon but something I am aware of is that cinnamon is used a lot in African cooking. Sorry I can't be of more help than that.

Being severely allergic, you may want to call Disney on that to get specifics, rather than ask a bunch of strangers on a non-official Disney forum.

I'm sure the OP is planning on asking DW, too, but this is a great place to also ask. They are quite a few regulars who might be able to share their firsthand experiences on the subject.

I think there's someone who posts here and has a cinnamon allergy so hopefully they'll be able to give more specifics. I would suggest seeing if contacting Special Diets can give you any help (since it's an unusual allergy) and making sure that you're upfront about it when you order food. Cinnamon is actually one of those things that actually shows up hidden in quite a few foods, including savory ones. Indian, African, Mexican, Middle Eastern, and Chinese foods all may use cinnamon in savory dishes. I've read a couple things saying that BBQ sauce typically has cinnamon in it. The problem is that many items will just lump it under "spices" rather than list it separately on labels. To me that suggests that it's worth planning on more table service meals than counter service. Do you go to restaurants at home? Think about what you do then.

Do you need to ingest it or are you sensitive to airborn cinnamon as well? While it shouldn't make a difference in October, I think it's been mentioned on the board that around Christmas it is sometimes used in some of the shops as a scent. Off the top of my head I can't think of a place that would have it that way in October, but if airborn is going to be a major issue, it might be worth packing a mask just to be careful.

Just talk to the chef, even at the counter service, they will tell you the ingredients. They will have something that you will be able to eat.

My sister has a cinnamon allergy and it is a tough one! There are tons of places it hides. Is it a new allergy? She has had trouble with Mexican foods and lots of breads and breakfast items like pan cakes and waffles though 'i have no clue of WDW version has these. She has also had issues with marinades when it was lumped with "spices". Depending on your reaction, you may have to avoid anything labeled this way.

If you are airborn, October could still be an issue with scents. Sometimes fall/halloween/pumpkin items do contain cinnamon too. Be sure you have plenty of epis/medication just in case.

^^This is what I meant by asking the question ;) ^^

As for the other questions--I used to have reactions with the smell in the air, but that portion I have pretty much outgrown--have had the allergy for 20 years now--I only get light headed now and once I'm away from the area, I'm good after about 5 minutes.

I just wanted to see if anyone had any item that they could recall that would be shocking to find out it had cinnamon in it (like getting a Dole Whip (my fake example) thinking it's only pineapple and ice cream and taking a big ole' bite and my mouth suddenly feel like it's on fire from the cinnamon). I've had that surprise more than once before and have learned to ask, but admit I have learned the hard way that what I assume is safe isn't always (got that surprise in special cheese sauce at a Mexican restaurant)...as for BBQ sauce, I just avoid it all together unless I make it myself, so that's not a concern since there is too much of a risk of cinnamon being in it.

I will definitely check out the ingredients at the places listed--I had no idea African food used a lot of cinnamon, but that's why I asked and thanks to all those who have helped!
