Because of a shortage of jobs here (and the fact tha tI lost mine), I am planning to move. My parents are going to help me resettle somewhere and I finally narrowed it down to Louisville and Cincy. I am single and the only one depending on me is my new German Shepherd/Beagle mix Maverick. I'm having a hard time making up my mind which of the cities to move to. So far, the positives for Cincy are that I have family there (but I'm not sure how they would feel about my being right there), what looks like plenty of clerical/secretarial jobs, cultural attractions, bigger city, etc. The positives for Louisville are there is a lower crime rate and there appear to be jobs there as well. Any thoughts (especially from those who live in either city)?

Choose Denver for obvious reasons. ;-)

If I had to pick a city where I would PREFER to live, I'd choose Louisville (I have an office there and work there quite often). However, the job market isn't great in The Ville. I have friends there who have been out of work for quite a long time. I'd say you should apply to jobs in both cities and see where your best offer comes from before you move.

And don't forget Lexington!! :goodvibes

I personally like Cincinnati more than Louisville and live about an hour from both. Each city has sections where you want to stay away from, but overall I am comfortable visiting both cities.

Do not discount the Lexington area, I live 15 minutes north. Depending on what type of job you are looking for, you may find it here. Unemployment in Lexington proper is around 8%, 9% in the 7 counties surrounding the city. It is a great area to live in, the cost of living is reasonable, and the people are friendly overall.

What's nice is that if Lexington does not have what we need, we are only an hour away from the larger cities.

I'm 1 1/2 hours from L'ville, and 2 hours from Cincinnati. I like Cincinnati so much better, as it seems to have so much more to offer than L'ville. There's more opportunity for jobs and culture in Cincinnati IMO. L'ville just seems small town to me.

Cincy has way more to do than Louisville IMO.

Oh and if you move here, please pronounce it as "Louis-ville" and not "Luhl-ville." Thanks. :thumbsup2

good luck where ever you land......I am not familiar with either area as I have been in FL my entire life.

I live in a suburb of Cincinnati, about 25-30 minutes outside of downtown.

Louisville feels smaller. I like Cincinnati and there are areas you want to stay away from. Do you want to live in the city or around it? There are several nice neighborhoods in Cincinnati city limits such as Hyde Park, Oakley, Norwood, Mt. Lookout, and more. Generally Clifton is a pretty safe area to live, as that is where the University of Cincinnati is located. The place to stay away from at all times is Over-the-Rhine. It has some beautiful architecture but is very crime ridden. There are some other neighborhoods (Price Hill and others) that have crime but I think generally the city is usually pretty safe.

If you are looking towards the suburbs there are many wonderful communities. You have your own smaller city to be in but are also really close to downtown Cincinnati. Mason has a huge population because of a lot of businesses in that area.

I definitely think the east side of Cincinnati is much nicer than the west side, in my opinion.

If you have any questions feel free to ask or PM me! I've lived here my whole life.

Huh?? I have never heard anyone pronounce it as "Louis-ville" and I've lived here my entire life. Are you saying to pronounce it "Louie-ville" (silent "S") or "Louis-ville" as in "Lewis", with the "S"? I've always pronounced it "Lou-a-vul" pretty much. :rotfl:

Anyway, OP--sent out some resumes, in both cities, before you make a decision. I'd hate to see you end up in either place and not be able to find a job...or a job that won't pay enough to find a safe place to live.

Was the city named after King Louis or King Luhl? ;) I just hate hearing it not pronounced as "Louie-ville." ;)

Poohlovr, the good thing is that at first I will have parental financial support (I know I'm a little old to have them help me but since I'm their only heir anyway, they're willing to spend some of the money they would have left to me now to see me in a better situation than I am right now.) I can't find a job AT ALL down here. I plan to start out by signing up with all the temp firms in the area I move to (of course, there's also always the chance that my aunt knows someone in Cincy who needs a good secretary/admin assistant....she has a lot of friends and runs one of the court programs there.)

Since you're going to have some support, which is more your style?

Louisville definitely has a "Smaller" town feel, while having an active arts and sports community. There is a lot of night life (clubs and such, if you're so inclined). The cost of living is also somewhat lower in Louisville (therefore, lower rent). There's some decent shopiing, but not great. We have some really nice malls.

Cincy has the bigger town feel, with the problems that some with that (more traffic and as you said, a higher crime rate). There's better shopping there (more upscale, if that's important to you) and a bigger night life scene.

Look at it this way-Cincy is major league (they have the Reds), while Louisville is minor league (we have the Bats). That pretty much descibes life in each city.

I do like our zoo more than theirs.

Obviously, King Louis (silent "s", BTW). But, since I don't have French accent, I would not be pronouncing it as his name was pronounced anyway.

But, I do have a slight southern accent--so Lou-a-vul is is. I also usually drop the "g" in a word ending in "ing" and say "ya'll". I don't say "ain't" though, so I'm not all bad. :rotfl:

How do you pronounce Versailles, Ky?

I take that King Louis thing from my fiance who is from Jeffersonville. He hates it too when people say "Luhl" and he even doesn't have an accent surprisingly! I am from NJ and moved here 2 years ago so the accent things get to me! ;)

There's your problem--getting your instruction from someone who lives out of state! lol

The accent thing is crazy--I have a slight accent. I know people from just a couple of counties over who have a heavy accent.

Amazing that we can live so close together and speak so differently! My sister-in-law (who grew up in Eastern Ky) speaks a totally different language than me. She "totes a poke" and such. :rotfl:

I'll say! I'm used to people talking like they do on the Jersey Shore. :sad2: :rotfl:

this reminds me of the tshirt/sign that lists all the ways people say Louisville, LOL :rotfl:

other than that, I'd pick Louisville over Cincinnati, although I miss living in NKy (across the river from Cincinnati) for the food, LOL!

I live in Louisville, and I absolutely love it here!

I've lived in lots of different cities and I never felt as "home" as I did when I moved to Louisville. I've lived here for about 9 years now.

The people here are so friendly, the parks are amazing, and it seems that Louisvillians feel a lot of pride in their town.

There is quite a bit to do here, not as much as Cincinnati obviously, but I've never felt bored here at all. I've been both single and married in Louisville and I have had a rich social life as both.

If you move to Louisville, I'd check out homes in the Highlands, Crescent Hill, or St. Matthews. There are a lot of beautiful homes and condos in these areas, lots of mature trees, very walk-able neighborhoods, etc.

I have a good friend who has lived in Louisville and Cincinnati, I'll ask her what she prefers and get back to you.

Good luck with your decision!

Definitely Louisville! I love to visit Cincy but live in Louisville. There is usually plenty to do here, easy to get around town without getting lost, and people are really nice (I know, I am one of the people here. lol). We have good schools, a safe city, some nice places to shop.... the 2 East End malls are great and there are lots of independent shops and boutiques in both The Highlands & Crescent Hill....and if you like spots we have amazing venues to catch a game. Our baseball may be minor league BUT at least it's Triple A (to quote an old song)....& the Bats home at Sluggerfield is gorgeous w/ a great view for the frequent fireworks shows on the river front and they are often better than the major league affiliate Cincy Reds. We have a brand new 240 million dollar arena being built downtown along the river which will be home to Louisville Cardinals Mens & Womens basketball as well as hosting NCAA championship events in various sports, concerts, and conventions. Our football stadium is as nice as alot of pro stadiums if a bit smaller and is currently undergoing an expansion project which will add an additional 20,000 plus seats and several new luxury suites. There has been a recent influx of more upscale returaunts and clubs in the city and we have one of the best park systems in the country including Riverfront Park and several Olmsted Parks such as Cherokee, Seneca, Shawnee, and Iroquois.
We're also only 2 hrs away from both Ciny & Indy and both are straight shots up either I-71 or I-65 so access to amenities in those cities is pretty easily accessible as well in case you want to catch a NFL, NBA, or MLB game.
Anyway, I am a bit biased I know BUT while I love to visit Cincy for things like Reds games or the coasters at King's Island which is just north of the city I LOVE living in Louisville.

................and it is Lou-a-vil or Lou-a-vul....or just simplify it and call it "The Ville". The city may be named for King Louis but we're not in France so....
