Is there a way to get rid of cigarette odor in a home? Please advise. My mom just bought a new house and it's making her  and me too, when I visit.

We bought our house from a smoker and we ended up using a primer that is made for houses that have had fires in them. Then we painted over the primer with the paint we wanted. We also had all of the carpets cleaned really well. That took care of the smell but 4 years later and I still find tar spots leaching through the paint in the master bathroom - disgusting! :scared1:

DH and I are both smokers and spraying febreeze on the furniature and then we spry Lysol Odor neutrilizer in the air

I don't want to depress you... but my grandmother died about 12 years ago. She was a habitual smoker. We're talking there was a cigarette burning constantly even if she wasn't smoking it. The place REEKED. Before we sold the house, we sealed it (there is sealant you can buy that is supposed to get the smoke smell out- or at least trap it in the walls), and painted it twice.

Since- the new owners painted again, sealed, painted 3 times, sealed, painted, etc. The smoke smell still remains.

The furniture we got from her house has been sitting in our basement for 12 years... still smells like smoke :confused3

If there's carpet she could replace it. Try the seal and paint thing- but be forewarned that it may not work depending on how much the previous owner smoked. Goodluck and I hope someone else offers something more promising!!!

This works like a charm!

Kilz

My in-laws smoked like chimneys and when we took over their house we used this on every wall! Absolutely no smoke smell left here!

This is exactly why when DH & I smoke(d) it was never in the house and never in the car - good luck - I did like the suggestions on the e-how link - vinegar and charcoal are very powerful odor removers and Kilz is an AMAZING product

Can you call in a smoke removal place? Like when someone has a house fire?

I would definetly use KILZ on all the walls and ceiling and remove all flooring.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. The carpet was just replaced before the previous owners sold the house. They said they didn't smoke after installing it but, who knows? I'll e-mail the links to her and let her know your tips.

When my father died it took years for the house not to stink..we got rid of the carpet, got new furniture, new curtains etc but it still stunk...when I washed the ceilings before painting them the amount of tar on them was just vile. I am embarrassed now that we had people in the house to visit with it smelling so disgusting! We had to sell his car when he died because no one in the family would drive it because he smoked in it and you can not get the old cigerette smell out of a car. I remember begging him to quit smoking...I once hid all his cigerettes....he ended up dying at 55 years old thanks to the cigerettes!

if you want to seal and paint, first wash all walls, we use castrol super clean, diluted 1 cup cleaner to gallon water, and wash till no more smoke comes offf, if the ceilings are sheet rock, smooth finish, they can be washed the same way, blown or textured ceilings are harder, i would get a pro to come in and refinish those.
