i’m going the week of Christmas. (Dec23-30) I know it’s the busiest time of the year, but my daughters band is playing that week. I’m so nervous about my five year old and the crowds. I can’t see him waiting in those lines. I know to go for rope drop, but any other tips or experiences? Thank you!

It's very busy, the busiest week of the year. Have some patience and holiday spirit. Use FP+ as much as you possibly can. You'll be surprised at how much availability there is. Certainly, you can't get on what you want when you want, but you'll find things. Beyond that, it kind of is what it is...super busy.

Hey there...

We've gone the past 8/9 years and will be going back to Disney for our ninth Christmas this year. We usually go from 12/24-1/1.

Alright, so this year can and will be different due to free dining, but here's what you'll typically see as far as crowds (1 being the lowest, 10 being the highest). Remember, this is comparatively speaking. A Christmas "7" is higher than an everyday 7 you'll find on Touring Plans.

12/23: 7; this is a Sunday and will be a check-in day. Most people who come for the "week before Xmas" will leave on 12/22 and head home for the holidays. Many people taking advantage of the free dining discount will check in on this day.
12/24: 8; Obviously it'll be crowded on this day. Can't speak for the parks because we always check-in and hang by the pool. A lot of people who didn't get free dining will check in on this day.
12/25: 10; High crowds. MK will hit a Phase 3 closure; Long waits, wall-to-wall crowds
12/26: 9; The irony is that 12/26 is sometimes more crowded than 12/25 at some parks. This past year, AK was crazy crowded on 12/26 and 12/27. Seems like everyone goes to MK on Christmas, then over to Ak to get Pandora out of the way. Maybe the trend will shift to DHS this year...
12/27: 7; Small dip in crowds. Many people come for Christmas OR NYE. You'll see a good amount of people check out on 12/27 or 12/28 and head home for NYE
12/28: 7; See above.
12/29: 8; Runners start checking in. Suddenly you walk the resort and there's runners everywhere. NYE'ers start checking in
12/30: 9

Okay, now a bunch of thoughts with no true semblance. I'm just typing and seeing what comes to mind...

Look, it's going to be crowded no matter how you cut it. But there's absolutely ways to "beat" the crowds.

As a rule of thumb, we always go early, take a break in the afternoon, then return later. It's hard with a 5 year old, but it's doable. The parks don't get BAD until 10 or 11am. By noon, you'll "feel" the crowds. The area by Small World, Main Street, and other normally congested areas will make you feel claustrophobic. During Xmas, Disney will have morning EMH at MK from 7am-8am. DO IT. Go and get on as many rides as possible. Book FP+ selections from 9am-12pm, then leave. Go back and relax by the pool if it's warm outside.

It's worth springing for a park hopper during this week. MK too crowded? Hop over to Epcot.

Pack for all different weather. It could be 85 degrees and sunny one day, then 50 degrees and 30 at night the next.

Stay on-site. This is the trip to stay on-site. For one, Disney transportation. Second, traffic is INSANE during Christmas week. Keep in mind when you go to MK, you'll need to park, then take the ferry or monorail over there. Not fun.

Pack light. If you can go sans bag, then do it. Security takes up a lot of time when going into the parks.

My cousin brought her 4 and 2 year old during Halloween. It was the closest (crowd-wise) I've seen the parks. Just keep your kid in a stroller when it gets crowded. They wouldn't stay in the stroller long and were fine.

Use the park layouts to your advantage. This is especially important during this week. Disney will open backstage areas (behind Main Street) to alleviate the crowds. Parade going on and you need to leave MK? Walk through Casey's and the Emporium gift shop to leave. Watch the parade from Frontierland, where it starts, then walk through . the breezeway over to your FP+ at Jungle Cruise.

You'll pack a lot of different things for this trip. Remember to pack your patience. People are either in slow motion or fast forward. Many people forget to pack their manners, so just grin and bear it.

The parks are great, but the resorts are AMAZING too. Go to Grand Floridian, Contemporary, Wilderness Lodge, Beach Club, Yacht Club, Boardwalk and Swan and Dolphin. All are beautifully decorated. Disney Springs will have Santa until 12/24, then Santa Goofy. Bring your little one to meet him, then grab a free chocolate at Ghiradelli.

Do the holiday-centric stuff: Jingle Bell Jingle BAM if they bring it back, pictures in front of the castle when it's lit up with icicle lighting, Candlelight Processional, etc.

Look here's the thing... we're an older family. Does it get tiring? Absolutely. Is it crowded? YEP. Have we considered going elsewhere? Uh huh. But it's amazing. Nothing beats Disney during the holidays. It's crowded, but it's also gorgeously decorated and our favorite time of the year. You can't beat it. It's not for everyone and you'll get a few people on here that'll yell "don't go!" I can't recommend it enough. Go; take the afternoons off; get your FP+'s; use EMHs; plan your days, and you'll be fine.

Where are you staying? That can make a big difference in your experience that week.

I did Christmas week with my DS when he was 8 and, yes, it was crowded. MK was the worst and, if we ever went back that week, I would probably skip MK altogether, quite honestly. If you go to MK, go as soon as it opens, schedule your 3 FP+ in the morning and get the heck out by 1 pm at the latest. By 10 am it will be wall-to-wall people. DHS wasn't bad when we went (and it was the last year of Osborne Lights, which was surprising). Again, go at opening, do your 3 FP+ and then see how you feel. AK was also crowded, but at least at AK you can do a lot without FP+ - Rafiki's Planet Watch, the animal trails, Wilderness Explorer's etc. EP, was really not that bad. My biggest advice for EP is to avoid WS during Candlelight Processional showtimes (and about 60 - 90 minutes before the first show when people are lining up). The middle of EP around the America pavilion is jammed with people. FW was pleasantly emptier during Candlelight Processional showtimes - we even got Starbucks drinks with little to no wait, LOL!

If MK gets too crowded for you, you can always tour the monorail resorts or take a boat over to WL and Ft. W to see the decorations. You could do the same at EP and DHS and just go tour the Boardwalk resorts. There are also jugglers and magicians on the Boardwalk at night and it doesn't get too crowded there. That's a good week to do things like HDDR, as well, because you'll be away from the park crowds, but will still be entertained. Last year, we did HDDR followed by a holiday sleigh ride which was really nice.

I would make a list of "park-alternative" activities in case the crowds get too overwhelming for you. We've been lucky the last 3 years (did Christmas week in 2015 and the week before for the past two years) and had beautiful weather so we could swim and spend time at our resort as well.

Thank you so much. That’s what I was looking for. I’m going to have to be a pro at fp + . Last time I went, there were no magic bands and paper fps. We are staying at POP. Also another first. I have never stayed at a value resort before, but the budget is tighter this time around. I am hoping there is swimming weather at least one day. Thank you all!

Free dining has been offered during this timeframe for the past several years, so there shouldn't be any crowd difference due to this.

With a 5 y/o I'd be concerned about the lines too. One thing you can do is to get a stroller for when you're not in lines. I know he doesn't need one at home any
longer, but having a stroller for him during the rest of the day will be helpful. You'll keep him out of the way of pedestrian traffic, and if he grows weary he can catch a few winks.

Concerning lines, there are only so many things you can do by using FP+, doing RD, etc. You may have to sacrifice some attractions to keep your DS in a good mood. I hope you go to WDW often enough that you can look forward to going another time when it won't be so busy and your kids have more stamina. I think you'll still have a wonderful time, taking your children to WDW is always a chance to create some great memories. :earsboy:

We went last year 22nd-30th and had an amazing time.

If possible, do dessert parties, especially for HEA. They are a lifesaver.

Book as many ADRs as you can. I am guessing that the wait to order food at Casey's on Xmas day was at least an hour. We did 2 ADRs per day on all 3 of our MK days and I felt sorry for those standing in line at QS restaurants.

It took over an hour of travel time on the bus to get to MK on Xmas day. Those who chose to drive would have taken even longer. When people say to avoid MK on the 25th, I now understand why.

Be patient and don't expect to do everything, and you will have a blast!

Ah, I didn't word that correctly. I meant with free dining falling on a Saturday. In past years it's fallen on a Thursday, Wednesday, etc. With it falling on a work week, the 23rd wasn't as popular a travel day... now with it being during the weekend, more people will be prone to take advantage.

Actually FD has been bookable on the last weekend before Christmas for the past five years with dates ranging from December 20 - 23. People have getting FD over Christmas and New Year's for a long time now, so I don't think it will make restaurants or crowds any worse than prior years.

We are thinking about going next year with the dates of December 12-19th. Will it be extremely crowded during that time period or just becoming extremely crowded the last few days?

I don't even think it will be extremely crowded on your last few days. You'll be leaving on the Wednesday before the weekend when the crowds pour in.

We went during this time frame about 5-6 years ago at POR for four nights. But crowds were different then than they are now. I am willing to do this 7-night trip, maybe make it an 8 night trip to allow for time to tour the parks in the early morning hours only, when the crowds are generally lower. In other words, make every day a park day, just with less hours in the parks each day. Make sense?

Makes sense. That's what we do sometimes. It depends. We do spend a lot of time in World Showcase. We like to go really early and leave mid day or go later in the day and stay for the evening at the other parks.
