Christmas Shopping 2010

Just found this thread. I love christmas shopping. Haven't started yet because all extra money is going towards disney in 18 days. My family is Dh and I. Ds well be 15 by christmas and ds 13. Ds#1 wants a dsixl and ds#2 wants a Ipod touch. Not sure what else to get them.

Tell me about it! I think it look me over six hours to wrap presents last year! I always want mine to look perfect, with the right ribbon for each, but my goodness did that take up a ridiculous amount of time!!

Me too! I love wrapping and having pretty packages under the tree BUT I can't do it all at once. It wears me out. I got presents for DS's Nov birthday last month, wrapped them, and stuck them in the closet. I think this is the way to go! From now on I will be wrapping them as I buy then doing bows as I put them under the tree.

I just moved our trip to Dec 10-19. Now I KNOW I've got to shop early! :scared1: I'm so glad I found you guys. :grouphug:

Just got my DD9 american girls today. I'm going to wrap it tonight. I really want to wrap as I go this year. There's nothing worse then spending an entire day wrapping gifts right before the big day!

Famous Last Words  Why is it I am always up to the wee hours Christmas Eve wrapping away? :rotfl2:

I love my wrapping day! I am lucky enough to be a stay at home mom and I do it while dd is in school and dh is at work so I have the whole house to myself! I spend the day camped out in my living room watching Christmas movies and wrapping all the presents. It is just what I need to get me in the holiday spirit. I look forward to all all year- sick huh? My favorite things to watch are : A Christmas Carol, MASH- there are several Christmas episodes that I DVR each year and Christmas cartoons. :santa:
How fun!!! I am a stay at home mom too...but we homeschool,so dh usually takes the kids on a Sat out for breakfast and I wrap like crazy!!! I used to do the ribbons, bows, everything...Now I just do one cute little ribbon, or a special bow...I don't really have time....and the boys could care LESS!! LOL
I want to participate! I love to Christmas shop and with four kids we always start early. We try to do "a kid a month" from August - Nov. Last year we didn't start until Sept because I couldn't get in the spirit, never did feel too Christmas-y as a matter of fact LOL I'm not sure why but I hope this year is more fun!:santa:
Last year I insisted that DH and I trade gifts and stuff stockings. I think that is why I didn't enjoy Christmas  I had to buy his stuff and the stuff he was giving me, too. Lesson learned, he is NOT a shopper. I am really excited to have a couple of gifts bought.

~Leanne
Your kids are the same ages as mine! DS14, DS11, and DD7...well almost exactly!! DD is getting AG stuff too...and mine also love cameras!! I like your list...sounds perfect...and yes, 14 yo boys are hard to buy for!! Last year ours got an electric guitar and amp for his big gift. His bday is 12-4,and he got a good camera...so he was a happy guy!! I like you Kid-A-Month idea...I might steal it!!!!!

AWWW!!! Yep...you better get busy!!!

Hi Ladies,

I went to the library last week and picked up Reader's Digest "The Ultimate Christmas" :santa: (The lady kind of looked at me like I was crazy for getting it this early), but I found some things that I like and wanted to bring it home to look at it more and make copies of the pages that I like. There were other Christmas books there that dates back to 2000. So check out your local library and maybe you can find some books! They have plenty of food ideas and decorating ideas!!!!:cheer2::cheer2:

dizneychik that is a good idea.

never thought about that. They both would like disney ties maybe they might have to wait to get them.

I love this thread!!! :goodvibes

I officially started my Christmas shopping last week while we were on vacation. I ran into Target to pickup some snacks for the room and got a bunch of greeat toys 75% off. I picked up a Thomas the Train set for my nephew #1 for $5.98, a mathbox car set for my nephew #2 for $3.98, Pictureka game $3.98, and a dino toy for a birthday gift $4.98. Then I hit the GAP outlet and picked my 2 nieces up a ls tee and skirt set for $10.50 (after coupon, of course)!!

I am excited that I found this thread. DD5 is basically done from hoho, Kmart clearance toy sale did that. We will buy her clothes and such. now DD19 is another story. I have bought her a dinnerwear set she wanted from Target and I think we will get her a new tv(she has been going to Community College and will transfer to the Univeristy of Alabama in January) and things for her apartment.

I am so glad I found this thread. I am currently workign on my Christmas list. i did pick up something small for my nephew but will probably get him something a little bigger. I may need to ask my sister about my niece becuase she is getting really hard to shop for and she is only 9! :scared1: Last year I believe we gave her a gift card to Barnes & Nobles since she does like to read but not sure if we want to repeat that gift or if I should just get her a Visa giftcard. :confused3

DH and I started talking about our kids today. I think that he is finally seeing the light...normally I do all the Christmas shopping and he just helps wrap the gifts a few days before Christmas but this year I needed to discuss the plan with him since he started talking about getting DS8 an electric guitar. DD wants Bitty Baby twins...and DS9 is talking about Legos and Club Penguin stuff so we are most likely going to pre-order the Club Penguin Wii game for him.

Has anyone done the Lego BrickMaster Club? ( I think that is the name of the magazine subscription) We were talking about getting it for DS8 but wanted to know what other people thought of it. Thanks!!

RDA also has an amazing "Merry Christmas Songbook." It has a great CD of Christmas songs and sheet music for anyone who plays piano. I don't play the piano, but the CD is wonderful for the car! Love the mid-November switch from regular car CD's to Christmas music!!

I love the switch too!!!! I will have to look into getting that CD! I normally listen to Kenny G or Boys II Men and Chipmunks :) and what ever station is playing Christmas Music but would love to add to the collection. DD-7 listens to Kenny G Christmas music ALL YEAR (for some reason she thinks she needs it to go to sleep)!!!! As you can tell she loves Christmas and is always in the Christmas mood!

Did a little more shopping this evening. It's what happens when I'm let loose in Target ALONE :scared1:. I had 2 1/2 hours of ME time this evening....DH is out of town and DD was at a birthday party (her first where parents didn't stay. It was at my neighbors house and they took the kids for pizza and arcade games. My baby is growing up :sad1:). Anywho, I went and browsed all the end caps for bargains and I did manage to find a few. Not all Christmas related, but I got a few things.

Got DD the slide for her zhu zhu pets (not on sale, but went ahead and grabbed it). Got her some Scooby Doo silly bands for her stocking. Also got her a bathingsuit for next year on sale and 3 shorts & tanks outfits. All of which was marked down and each piece was under $3. Those won't be for Christmas but I'll put them away for next spring/summer.

Got DH a bathingsuit for $4.98. He's kinda picky on the style he likes and this was it, so I bought it.

I got myself some PJs, just boxer shorts and tank, but both on sale. Got myself some cute rain boots too. Not on sale, but I needed rain boots and they're cute :)

Also picked up these 2 big, heavy plastic red serving bowls. They were 98 cents each. Not sure when/if I'll need them, but I couldn't pass them up. They are nice deep bowls, for chips or whatever and I figured red would work for Christmas, Memorial Weekend, 4th of July...when/if the cook out mood strikes

So, while I didn't knock out much holiday shopping, I hit some good deals.

I do have a few questions. DD mentioned wanting a butterfly garden. They did this in her class last year. Grew the butterflies from caterpillar to butterfly and then released them. I found the kit online, but I'd like to avoid shipping. I didn't see anything like that at Target, so anyone seen any anywhere? I wonder if Toys R Us carries them in their science department. Her classes was a mesh round thing and her teacher mailed off for the caterpillars?

Also, I've been kicking around getting a Wii this year. DD is NOT a video game girl. We don't own any of the leapsters, DS things, etc. She's just not into them and has never asked for one. She'd rather play with her polly pockets and LPS, BUT, DH has mentioned it a few times, and I know DD has played some of the dance things and sports games over at friends houses, although she's never said she wants one here. BUT, as much as we were couped up last winter with all the snow, I thought it might come in handy and would keep us all active....tennis, bowling, dancing. So, after all that, I am wondering if I should buy the thing NOW and ask if I will be able to return it (only if something is wrong with it). I know Target's return policy is 90 days, but I wonder if places will extend it a little knowing it's for Christmas. I just want to take the chance of not being able to find one if I wait much longer?

And on that note, what are some good Wii game suggestions for a 7 year old girl (and 36year old man while we're at it :lmao:)

ETA: I did start working on my list of who I need to bake goodies for this year and even flipped through some of the recipes I've cut out since last holiday season!

We get our butterfly habitats from www.shop-insectlore.com
If you don find the habitat in the store you will still have to send off for the caterpillars. You can reuse the habitat so we just send for the caterpillars. Once you start shopping with them, they will give you discounts on your order.

Hi everyone i'm joining in! I mostly have to buy for my kids, and i've already started writing the lists out. Their big present is Disney, we are going from Dec 11-18. I took them the same time last year and that was an early surprise Christmas gift. This year they know about it ahead of time so they can help me plan! My kids are 11,10,and 6.
My 11 year old son is going to be 12 while we're in disney so I have his birthday and Christmas to buy for. He has on his list legos, wii games, including the new epic mickey coming out, ps2 games, camera (i'm going to get him a kodak easyshare), itunes gift card, remote control helicopter, toy story army men. Then i'll have to think of some different things to surprise him with.
My 10 year old daughter is very hard to shop for. She doesn't play with toys anymore. She has her pets and she spends her free time playing with them. She would love more pets, but we have enough already..lol. So far on her list I have a booklight, hamster race track, playdoh (she still likes to play with it at times with her younger brother), and maybe a couple stuffed toys from disney. She liked stich when we were there today. Also some sprays and lotions from bath and body works. If I could find a great deal on a dsi I would get her that. She has a ds and likes it. I'm also getting her alice in wonderland for ds. I need more ideas for her!
Then I have my 6 year old son. He has already told me he wants a stuffed Woody, Jessie, and bullseye. I saw them on sale at disney for 2 for $25 so i'm going to pick them up when i'm there alone this week. He also wants legos, playdoh, ds games, and a booklight. Other then that I don't know what to get him. We have tons of toys already!!
If I could find some laptops for a great deal I would get them for my 11 and 10 year old.
The hardest thing i've found with shopping early is my kids aren't always into the same things a few months later. I really am on a budget so I want to get the things that they want the most which could change from now til then. Last year by black friday I was done shopping and I hope to be done this year too. Then I can just concentrate on disney!!
My concern with shopping this early is the problem with returning things. What do you do if come Christmas the item is broken and needs returned or if you've just changed your mind? If you've bought it this early it would be too late to return it by then.

bas71873...I agree insect lore. That's where ours came from. I actually bought it at toyrus though. You might want to check there. Our store just got a whole section of insect lore stuff at the beginning of summer.
And for the wii. My kids love theirs! It came with wii sports which is fun. That has the bowling on it.

:welcome: to all our new friends!!! I love when the radio stations switch over to Christmas also....last year, for some reason, they switched one station over on NOV 1, instead of Thanksgiving day...I liked it,but I did hear complaints...hopefully they will do it again!!!!
As far as buying a Wii....I put it off too, then got one last Christmas...we were so glad we got it. I got the TSMM game,. Hasbro family game, several along that line and a Lego game for my ds11 Legomaniac, and Sonic for my ds14. Yes,...taking things back is a problem if you buy it this early--that's the only drawback. The solution is just take out cash from your account and put into an evelope(as if you were spending the $$ on the actual gift)...then around Oct take the Cash and purchase it. That way you still stay on budget and you keep putting the money back, just as if you were buying it now. I have done that with gifts I was iffy about.

I just want to say how EXCITED I am to have found this thread. DH & I were recently talking about taking a short trip to WDW this fall, but due to a knee injury that is turning out more serious than I thought, I think we're going to have to cancel those thoughts. SO instead of planning for Disney, I'll plan for my other favorite - CHRISTMAS!!!! I love it so much - I love all the little things there are to do and enjoy. We now have 1 son, he'll be nearly 3 at Christmastime (march bday) and I'm SO excited for this year. He loves christmas too. :santa:

Yesterday, he told me that he wants us to put up FIVE christmas trees. :rotfl: And he told me where each should go and all about his Cars ornaments from last year. And he wants to see Santa so badly. He's been asking since May. He watches the Mickey christmas movies all the time, and won't let us take down our WDW advent calendar wreath. :lmao:

One of my favorite things about Christmas is the Shopping! I'm a bit of a shopaholic, so who wouldn't like a holiday that basically makes you shop more! :) I do like to go out for Black Friday, but usually dont' get to as DH has to work or we are out of town at his parents' (like this year). Last year we were in WDW up until Christmas Eve. THAT was crazy getting everything done ahead of time. Even gave my mom a grocery list so I had the stuff to make christmas breakfast and dinner. Never again!

My list:
  • DS (will be almost 3)
  • DH
  • Mom - I also get my mom something extra special, b/c she watches my son 4 days a week. Since we don't have to pay for daycare, and we don't pay her, I splurge on her. Two years ago, I put all their home movies on DVD, last year, a Coach purse and part of their WDW trip this spring. This year, I'm stumped!
  • DSis - just broke up with her BF, so this year I get to buy her fun girly stuff and spend my BF budget all on her!
  • Dad
  • Grandparents - these are the HARDEST to buy for since they have everything they need or could possibly want - they are in their 80s/90s!
  • MIL
  • FIL
  • DNiece (6)
  • DSIL & DBIL and we don't exchange anymore
  • DS's godmother (and my best friend)
  • DS's godfather (DH's best friend)

DS has already told me he wants a Curious George game. Any thoughts on if that exists?

I'm also thinking about some sort of computer game/electronic game for him. I' know he's only 3, but he loves playing on the computer at my mom's on the PBS kids website, etc. Any suggestions?

DisneyMommy...

Someone mentioned the I-Touch as the gift for their hubby this year. We LOVE ours! It was my present last Christmas but my hubby and son have really stolen it from me. You might want to get one of the new app books to go with it, it will list all kinds of ways that you can use it. You can get them from some of the sellers on Amazon so that you don't have to pay near full price.

Oh this is FUN!

This is a great idea! I'm going to look into that one for DH. Got him the I-touch last christmas.

Wow, this thread has grown...I have some catching up to do!

I am considering an I pod touch for a Christmas gift....is 8 gb enough for a kid, or is 32 better to grow into? 32 is not better for my wallet!! Also, anyone have any great stores/sites/strategies to purchase digital movies to load onto the Ipods?

Also, there is a great sale at americangirl.com...even good w/o a free shipping code!!Thanks for the help and inspiration!

So jealous of you moms to girls who get to buy American Girl stuff! I had Samantha and am hoping I can someday pass her on to a daughter of my own.

Oh!! Which doll/dolls did you get? I love AG!!! I always have to look at them before I wrap 'em up!! They are so beautiful!
How sweet!!!

I love aprons! They are just so cute and homey! Last year me and dd got the Minnie 'Queen' and 'Princess' mommy and daughter aprons...I love them.
glad you popped in!!!! I need to look at those matching pjs!!

Aprons - GREAT idea for my SIL and Niece. Thank you!

For those of you with Nintendo Wii's - any game suggestions for my DH and I? Is TSM great? I know the Wii concept is to be active, but with my injury, are there any games that are a little more sedentary?

OOH! I just remembered that I bought DS an ornament already - so I guess I have started my shopping - the earliest I've ever started, ever!

This is really good advice....I hope I can follow it! I am just about ready to plunk down some $$ for an Ipod, but keep thinking a new model will come out in Sept and make current models cheaper or make the new model the one to get. Plus I am thinking 8gb is not enough and 32gb is too much and wonder why the 16gb was discontinued......I guess I will have to sit tight.

I also have a Chrissa American Girl doll tucked away...need to decide to keep it or ebay it for $$ for dd to pick out her own doll - she seems to love each one tho, so at least w/Chrissa we have a doll w/a great story. Ergh!

Our family didn't like the TSM game...I am going to get Mario Kart this year which everyone loves on the DS, so it is practically a shoo in!!

Figment 1990- :welcome: Glad you are here and love Christmas so much!!! LOL...sorry you are having knee trouble and no Disney trip...but yeah, Christmas is just as fun to plan for with little ones! As far as hard-to-buy-for-elderly family members,...I always recommend a Harry & Davids Fruit basket!!! Not just elderly people either! I get one for someone on my list every year. If you haven't seen them go to the website....fresh fruit, desserts, snacks...all in beautiful baskets or great boxes....I love just looking at them!
For your mom...geez...that's gonna take some thinking! Maybe a GC worth 2 or 3 hair appointments at the best/snazziest Salon around....hmm..we will all be thinking about this!!! My kids like Mario too, so maybe that would be fun for y'all...
Your little guy sounds precious! I love 5 Trees!!!!!
