We were talking at lunch time about Christmas novelty songs and who likes them and which ones etc. (started 'coz the Chipmunks were playing) so we were going down a list of them...but I'm sure we missed some.
Does anyone find them 'amusing' after they've heard them once? I've been listening to the Chipmunks Christmas Time Is Here and the Hippopotamus for all of my life so I'm sure I was amused as a child but it has been a long time since I was amused. My friends were going on about Porky Pig singing Blue Christmas and how 'hysterically funny" it was. I liked it once but can't say I'd laugh at it again.

Mostly no, but Alabama did one called Thistlehair the Christmas Bear that's kind of a seasonal staple in our family.
:rockband:He comes around this time of year
Spreading lots of Christmas cheer.
The kids all love this shiny coat
And the smell of honey on his nose.
He tells them all about that star
And everything that it stands for.
The birthday we all celebrate
Is still our favorite holiday

Oh, Thistlehair the Christmas bear
Spreadin' the good news everywhere.
About Christmas time and what it means
To all the children of the world.
Every little boy and girl
Out there, love Thistlehair...

Depends on the song. Some nay some yay.

I absolutely love Straight No Chaser and they do lots of novelty song along with regular ones.

Chipmunks-yes
Hippopotamus-yes
Dominic the donkey- yes
Porky Pig- HELL NO

I love them....just because they drive my kids nuts! Can't wait when I hear them on the radio and can blast them out of the car!

But, in honesty, they do make me smile. They're silly, annoying, but bring back memories too. Some of our favorites...

Dominic the Donkey
I Want a Hippopotamus
I'm Getting Nuttin' for Christmas
12 Pains of Christmas (we all actually LOVE this one)
12 Days of Christmas by the Muppets and the one by Straight No Chaser
Chipmunks, of course!

And there's a very little known one that my mom used to play all the time by Roger Whitaker. It's called Darcy the Dragon. I have to look it up and play it every year, just out of nostalgia. We always used to say it would make the perfect animated Christmas special!

And I remember Thistlehair too!

I like some of them. I even like the traditional Christmas songs "sung" by cats and dogs. :) Heard one on the Holly Sirrus/XM station by Mel Blanc, really unusual. I need to do a search for it as I would love to hear it again.

Don't forget Snoopy's Christmas with the Red Baron

I like Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, as sung by the Irish Rovers.

I also love the 12 Days of Christmas as done by Bob & Doug MacKenzie... it's pretty Canadian though.

Heard these two ditties on Sirius Holly station:

Alvin and the Chipmunks-Christmas Don't Be Late. Yay
Dogs barking Jingle Bells. Nay.

12 Days of Christmas by the Muppets too!
I don't look at this one as a novelty. Maybe it's because I grew up with it on vinyl, but this album is an important part of my Christmas season. "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" sung by John Denver and Rowlf is one of my all time favorite Christmas songs.

As far as the ones that I consider Novelty, I only really like the 12 Pains Of Christmas. Every year, I am the guy with the lights.

I love them but have heard very few this year.
Oh my God, that's ALL that's on the radio this year. That's what started the conversation, actually.

That one we didn't know where to classify. It's definitely novelty but it's not 'funny'. It's also odd because it's a novelty song based on a novelty song.

But I haven't heard Irish Rovers' "It's Finally Christmas" at all. Just the Reindeer. The McKenzie brothers one is funny but I also find it's exactly what we were talking about - how many times do you hear it and laugh? It's kind of one of those things (like you said, fairly localised) you play for other people.

The Richard Simmons Most Wonderful Time of the Year is funny but I only need to hear it once a year.

Not at all, I LOVE hearing the MacKenzie brothers song! I find most people that I know LOVE listening to it and laugh each time they hear it on the radio - that being said, it CAN be overplayed, just like every other Christmas song, but if I hear it once a year, I still get a kick out of it - it's like listening to a comedy act... I'll laugh if I hear a the same joke every so often, but not if it's constantly being told. I also get a thrill out of the entire Christmas album by the Arrogant Worms, but that's even more localized, so I didn't bother mentioning it.

The Irish Rovers have a few other Christmas related songs, and I hear them all the time... but I wake up to Magic 100 in Ottawa, so they tend to overplay every single Christmas song since they refuse to play anything else during December.

I think Capitol FM in Edmonton has a very small library. I can almost set my day to it.

Feliz Navidad
Last Christmas - Wham
White Christmas
Most Wonderful Time
Hippopotamus
River
Last Christmas done by another group
Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth
All I Want for Christmas (they spell that one off with Feliz Navidad)
Merry Christmas, Darling
Winter Wonderland
Sleigh Ride
Do They Know It's Christmas
Last Christmas done by another group
Snoopy
Sleigh Ride instrumental
Chipmunks
Charlie Brown piano Christmas song
and various people singing any version of all of the songs above including about 16 versions of Last Christmas. In there is the Rudolphs, Here Comes Santa Claus (who sings that one where he says Santy Claus?),Christmas Song, Winter Wonderland, Blue Christmas, Christmas Shoes

Those are the ones that turn into earworms. There are some nice ones and I love when they throw Trans Siberian Orchestra stuff in there.

Magic 100 is known for their eclectic mix of music most of the year. They'll play pretty much every genre, every decade, all the time. No exception for their "Magic 100: the Christmas Music Station" time of the year... so they play a huge variety. Although now that I think about it, that Wham! song gets overplayed here too. UGH.

I adore the Hippo song.
Also, I'd never heard this until I moved to Maryland, but "I want crabs for Christmas" is down right hysterical. Like rolling on the ground laughing. I can never hear that enough.

Yes! I love "I Want a Hippopotamus For Christmas" and "Domenic the Donkey"
