i remember my grandmother having one of those ceramic trees with the "light bulbs" - except i don't remember there ever being a star on top - we probably broke it off early on....

We still have one! My mom took a ceramics class one time and made them for everyone. I've got my grandmother's! It doesn't look too hokey, and anything that lights up is exciting for the kids!!

We also made an xmas tree out of empty baby food jars. You stacked them on their sides in the shape of a tree, then put bits of garland in each, then strung lights through the back.
I, too, made a ceramic tree!

On a side note, I hang a few ornaments I made in school. One includes a really bad pic of me, with really short hair. DD asked who that boy was! Thanks!

This is not my folks old one, but one I found online. They used it for many years until they bought a house with a real fireplace in it...

We had one of these too.

I guess we all bought them because we wanted a fireplace...any fireplace.

My Mom made one of those when I was little! I wonder if its still around somewhere.

We had one of those as well. The one my mom made was white with the colored bulbs.

I love Lionel Trains...and never heard of The Train special.

I remember every year, our CHristmas Eves were crazy. Last minute wrapping in the morning, making food. At night we'd get reading for Mass, and I would always sing in the choir and read part of the Christmas story. After that we'd go home and chang into comfy clothes and go to my Grandparent's house. We eat all sorts of good stuff, listen to Christmas music, and wear reindeer antler headbands. Of course, my Grandma would drink a bit too much and go into a tizzy, and would start laughing incontrollably when my sister would try to sing.

After that, we'd go back to our house, get into our pjs, and read Christmas stories. Thn my mom would give us an ornament (or five ) and we'd set out Santa's milk and cookies. Then we'd crash, and Mom would start wrapping again! (She was always behind on that!)

We never immediately woke up and ran downstairs on Christmas morning though. Our rule was that everyone had to be awake and ready. Comb out the snarls, brush your teeth, and sit at the top on the stairs untill it was ready. Mom likes to tape our expressions when we see the tree for the first time with the presents. And of course after that, we;d open them! Then the grandparents would come up and we'd exchange gifts with them. Aftr that was our traditional breakfast of Christmas cookies and deviled eggs!

What was "Glass Wax" anyway????

OMG, did you have to scrape it off with a razor?

Orange in the bottom of the stocking, chocolate covered peppermint patties, life savers book, and fuzzy wuzzy soap (anyone?) along with avon lip balm and a new bath product.

I thought this was so cool because I actually got one of the 'IN' items that year. I must hav been around 5 years old. I just remember that it didn't get a fuzzy as the commercial though.

We also had the cardboard fireplace and the ceramic christmas tree. I still have one of those ceramic trees too, it was my grandparents, I think I'll put it out this year.

We also had these window clings that were just silhouettes (this was the early 1970's). They were red and green and white ones and you could make a whole winter scene. Us 3 kids would fight over who got to put them on the front door every year. I think avon sold them. Does anyone remember these? I can't find them on google.

Grandma would also buy the kids a huge peppermint stick, those ones that are over 1" in diameter and about a foot long. She would also get my dad ribbon candy. Dad would always leave the ribbon candy sitting on the book shelf until around april then throw it away. HE never told Grandma he hated the stuff.

One of my favorite memories is the black and white cartoons that only lasted a minute or two -- Suzy Snowflake, Frosty the Snowman, and the one about the 3 elves -- Hardrock, Coco, and Joe. You never knew when they would be on and it was such a treat when they appeared. One of our local stations brought them back a few years ago. What a delight for me and my kids just didn't understand my fascination with them and trying to catch them from the beginning to tape them.

Oh...Walter E. Smithe company put out a special free DVD of the Hard Rock, Coco & Joe one year along with Suzy Snowflake. DH got one! Those are really hard to find!!! I was so thrilled when I heard about the DVD. We also have those on VHS because it was a special Bozo circus that showed them.
