This is the first year that H and I have had a professional pet sitter. We have always used neighbors or our own kids, but the kids are out of the house, mostly, and a colleague recommended a woman who is a professional pet sitter. And she's great. We have decided to give her cash as a Christmas present (along with a small tin of treats) but are wondering how much. I seem to recall reading somewhere that an appropriate amount is a week's worth of whatever the sitter charges (so 7 x daily rate). Does this seem right? We want to be generous but not outrageous . . .

How often does this person sit for your pet?

I think the formula you used is more geared for someone providing a service to you all year long.

If this was an occasional sitter (long weekends here and there, and a week or 2 vacation) I would think perhaps 15-20% of the total you paid that person would be a great present.

I assume this is someone you use daily? Then yes I think one week worth is good unless daily amount is a lot and that would be enough to just give one day.

I'd tip one service - if you use every day/week, then 1 week's worth. If you uses for weekend's, 1 weekend's worth. If you use for random days, 1 day's worth.

I agree with TwoMisfits. We give our cleaning lady one cleaning fee but we round up. She charges $85 so we give her $100.
