I have asked on the Christmas Superthread but there does not seem to be much information on Christmas Day Meals at Disneyland. :surfweb:

We are looking for a traditional type of meal, so thinking either the Disneyland Hotel or the Grand Californian.

What types of food do they offer at different places?

My dad has even suggested Goofys for Dinner, any help would be wonderful.
:santa:

I'll have a close eye on this thread. I've asked twice about this and never had any responses. I think we're going to go to Napa Rose, but I'd like some other options (maybe more kid friendly/fun). Nothing at DLH, ate there on Christmas years and years ago and it was bad enough that all these years later no one in our house is willing to consider eating there on Christmas this year. Mind you, it is totally new management and now owned by Disney, but some experiences you just can't move on from. LOL

We usually do Goofy's or Storyteller's. We did the Jazz kitchen last year.

Another vote for Storytellers :thumbsup2

We've had very enjoyable Christmas Eve dinners at the Storytellers Cafe inside the Grand Californian hotel. That would be my recommendation for you. They don't do anything over the top for Christmas but there are small and subtle touchs to remind you it's the holidays. One year they had a huge ginger bread house by the waiting area. My kids loved it while we waited for our table. Last year I recall they had Christmas decorated cookies & other deserts. The best touch of all are the gas buring fireplaces in the dining areas. Talk about making it cozy for Christmas.

The food is considered classic California/American style consisting of seafood, steaks, pasta, & salads. You can order off their menu which has a limited selection or you can choose the buffet option. For Christmas Eve the buffet offered ham, turkey, and prime rib at the carving station. Many other cooked entrees and side dishes were offered as well. The selection at Storytellers may not be as grand as other restaurants but our family feels the quality of the food is far better than most places we've tried. Everything is prepared with fresh and quality ingredients. I've had just about everything on their menu. The only entree I found disappointing was the Sonoma Valley chicken. Skip that dish.

Lots of good pictures here. Menus too.

Storytellers does not put out the gingerbread house anymore - at least, that's what I was told last year. In fact, all but one server I asked had never even heard of the gingerbread house! The one guy who had heard about it and remembered it from previous years said he caught a brief glimpse of it early in the season last year (he said it was kind of a Haunted Mansion-type of gingerbread theme), and then he came to work later that day or the next day and it was gone forever and no one seemed to know anything about it, including his fellow CM's. He thought that maybe someone had broken it or tried to steal it or something. When I tried to ask other CM's about it, they looked at me like I was crazy.

Storytellers Cafe didn't even have a Christmas tree! I told my server that Storytellers was a restaurant begging for a Christmas tree because it has such a cozy, earthy type of environment, and he had no clue why they stopped putting the tree up for the season. The tree disappeared when the gingerbread house disappeared, I guess.

I hope you have some luck! I know you've been trying to find out for a while about specific Christmas day meals - that are actually specific to that day and not just the same meals served on any other day!:rotfl2:

So far, all we know is the stuff I have posted in Post #3 of the Superthread, about the restaurants that have the special holiday meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas (I think Plaza Inn is one of them but there are others too). That at least gives you a guideline to work with - you know which places might be serving special food this year, even if the food items are unclear. But unless you hear from people who have actually eaten these meals at these places on the actual holiday, I don't know how much more we will find out until the Dining people can tell you something. Maybe Storytellers will be a good choice - even if it is lacking a tree and a gingerbread house!! LOL!

Good luck!

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions. We are going to try for Storytellers. I will take good notes. I will also speak with dining line when I call.:worship:

It's one of the things about being away from home for Christmas that you still want to be a bit traditional. It will also be good to have a hot lunch or dinner by an open fire instead of scorching hot here in Australia.:lmao:

Does anyone know what happens at Napa Rose on Christmas? I'm pretty sure that is where we will end up, although I'm not considering Storytellers.

Yay....Sherry, someone remembers the gingerbread house besides me! My kids were disappointed last Christmas because they were expecting to see that again. But it was soon forgotten when they saw the Christmas decorated deserts & treats. I have a feeling the Christmas decorations at Storytellers aren't gone forever. Variations in stuff like this depends on who's in charge at the time and resources available. It could very well be that the gingerbread house broke and they never got around to making a new one yet. We are going back there again this coming Christmas so I'm excited to see if there will be any new surprises..

What is a bit surprising is the few CMs who remember it. We've been eating at Storytellers for the past 4 years and I know some have been there for a while.

You could be right about why the decorations come and go. The server who waited on me last year said it seems to be "hit or miss" with having a Christmas tree in the restaurant. He said that, in the past, some years they put a tree in Storytellers and some years they did not, and he wasn't sure why.

It is perplexing, though, that White Water Snacks has a Christmas tree and the Hearthstone Lounge has its own Christmas tree, and I found several trees together in the GCH ballroom/conference room/hall (or whatever they are calling it) - and yet, no tree at Storytellers!:confused3:confused3 Isn't that odd, when you think about it? It seems very strange to me!:rotfl2: Heck, they could take one of the several trees I found in the conference hall and stick it in Storytellers! That is so weird to not have anything - no tinsel, no garland, no tree - nothing - in Storytellers!

Then again, when I really paid attention, I noticed that the decor had been scaled back in small ways around all of DLR. In certain areas it was really evident to me that something was missing. In other areas, unless you are extremely detail-oriented, you probably wouldn't realize anything was missing. But little things here and there had disappeared or certain spots were no longer decorated. So I guess Storytellers was just a casualty of the scaling back of the holiday decor!

Yes, that gingerbread house in Storytellers was quite the mystery! My waiter was confused as to what had happened to it from the time he spotted it last season to when it disappeared. It seemed to literally be out for 2 minutes and then it vanished. That alone was odd enough. But when I asked other employees in the restaurant the next day, and they all looked at me like they had no clue what I was talking about when I said "gingerbread house," I felt like I had wandered into some sort of alternate universe!!:rotfl2: Even when I told them that their co-worker had said (the previous day) that he caught a fleeting glimpse of the gingerbread house, and then it was gone, they still looked totally clueless - as if they had no idea what was happening in their own restaurant!:rotfl2::rotfl2:

I wonder if the server saw the gingerbread house they were building for the dining room table in the Haunted Mansion?

I've learned that they no longer do the huge Christmas buffet dinner at the Disneyland Hotel like they do for Thanksgiving and Mother's Day, so we're also trying to figure out where to go for Christmas dinner while at Disneyland. I've heard Goofy's Kitchen can be fun that day, although I'm curious about the Jazz Kitchen's Christmas dinner!

Napa Rose sounds lovely, but we have a (nearly) 3 year old that might not appreciate the experience as much.

I have a three year old, but traveling with the whole family, we can entertain him if need be. I am also considering other options. We just want GOOD food and we know Napa Rose has that. We had a terrible Christmas dinner in the Disneyland Hotel in 1998, including the fact that there was NO SANTA ON CHRISTMAS EVE (family emergency and they had no back up, what the heck??), and it sort of ruined the experience. Must make sure that doesn't happen again!
