Christmas Cruise 2005!!!

Hi everyone,

I was wondering about the tux rentals on board. I saw the DCL web page with pics of the tux options and prices, and it seems reasonable to me. Ginny, I think you posted that the tuxes were in the cabin when you embarked. I'm wondering how sizing is done. Can you fill me in?

Also wondering, although the cruise is so far away LOL, how many semi-formal dresses would I need? Ok, the gown for formal night, and the dressy dress for semi-formal, but what about Christmas Eve and Christmas Night dinners? Do people usually go all out dressing for those nights, too? I would hope that our formal night falls on one of those nights, so that it would all fit anyway. For the "regular" nights, I plan on wearing a casual dress or capris with a blouse.

I hope I don't give you all a headache with my detail-oriented questions, but I'm just so excited about this trip, and the planning gives me so much joy.

I think my son and I MAY do this cruise. I'm afraid to say we will, because something else may come up.

We were doing the April 23 cruise, but friends convinced me we shouldn't do a 7 night since we've never cruised before. I then switched to the 4 night April 24 Wonder. Well, about two weeks ago I got a letter from one of son's former teachers inviting him to join a group she's taking to South Africa during spring break. We can't pass that up, so we're moving the date again.

Now I'm thinking why not go during Christmas?

If all goes well, and nothing else comes up, my son (14 by then) and I will be on this sailing.

:wave2:

Hi Aisling,

I can try to answer a few of your questions. On our 12/03 Christmas cruise, the formal night was Monday (12/22), and semi-formal was Thursday, Christmas night.

Perhaps because it was the height of the holiday season, everyone was dressed up on Formal night. Many women (all in our party) wore long formal gowns, and the majority of our daughters did also. There were also beautiful short cocktail dresses, and a lot of beading! There were many, many men in tuxedos. Everyone looked beautiful! The younger girls were precious in their party dresses, and there was a lot of picture-taking going on. Disney sets up staged photos in the atrium before each dinner seating for formal pictures to be taken of your family, which you can purchase later at Shutters. We have some beautiful pictures of our family, our girls, and our friends!

On semi-formal night (Christmas Dinner) I wore a silk pantsuit. The top was black, buttoned down the front and had 3/4 length sleeves. The pants were black with a red and gold floral print, with red beading on the red flowers. The pants were ankle length, and I wore black embroidered sling back pumps. My DD-17 wore a black dress with hot pink trim at the bodice and hot pink spaghetti straps, a dropped waist with a handkerchief hem. She is very tall and slender, and looked beautiful! My DD-13 wore a strapless black and white print dress. The bodice was ruched (I don't know if I spelled that correctly, but it was gathered from top to bottom, horizontally) and had a full skirt to about 4" above the knee. I think they both went without stockings, and wore black slides with heels.

My DH rented a tux from the site that DCL suggests. There is a link somewhere to that site. They require tuxedo measurements when you fill out the order form online. Your DH (and DS's) can go to any tux rental store in your area, and tell them that they need to be measured for a tux to be rented out of town. I think most tux places do this free of charge. When you get the measurements, fill the order form out online and send it in. We did not have our cabin number (we had purchased late, like you, on a spur of the moment, and could only get a GTY status). My DH's tux was delivered to our cabin around 5:00 p.m. the first night onboard. BE SURE TO HAVE ALL OF YOUR MEN TRY THEIR ENTIRE OUTFIT ON as soon as they arrive. My DH's jacket was way to big, and he needed to get a smaller one. Although they have a good stock of pieces onboard, it is much easier to make sure you get everything that fits correctly Saturday afternoon, rather than waiting until the next morning, or, heaven forbid, an hour before dinner!

My DH has a tux, but had "grown out of it". He has several sets of ties and cumberbunds, which he packed in his suitcase. He switched them out on formal and semi-formal nights. Several gentlemen had Disney sets, which they wore on semi-formal night - fun! You can purchase tuxedos on Ebay that are close in price to what you might pay to rent, but when you add in the shirt, vest, shoes, suspenders, etc. and sending it out to be ironed onboard, you may find that renting is less expensive and easier, depending on whether your family members will have use for it down the road.

I brought a pair of long black slacks, a pair of black capris, and several Christmas sweaters that have Christmas designs and are beaded. I wore these on the other nights. I think I packed my black pants on the same hanger as the pantsuit, and the sweaters rolled up and packed easily in my suitcase. There are lots of ways to do the formal and semi-formal, a long black skirt with different tops, a long black dress with different accessories (scarves, etc), black slacks, etc.

Mexicali night was held the night we were in Cozumel. Besides our excursions, we did a little bit of shopping and the girls each got a colorful mexican outfit of a tank top and with matching wrap around long pants in very colorful mexican print fabrics. They were booked to go on the teen catamaran trip that evening. There were many women in mexican skirts, and the pretty white mexican blouses that are gathered at the neckline with embroidery. There were a lot of capris and colorful shirts, also. Men were in colorful "hawaiian" shirts, or mexican shirts, and there were a lot of shorts that night. Everyone is given a lei to wear at dinner.

There is a lot of discussion on the boards about conforming to the suggested dress code. Most people do, and there are those who feel that it is their vacation, they paid the same price as everyone else, would be more comfortable in less dressy attire, and so they choose to dress accordingly. I don't think I have seen a post on the board where someone has actually been turned arway from a dining room at dinner time because they were wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

I hope I am not giving you a headache with MY detail-oriented answers, but since it was my first cruise, I had absolutely no idea what to expect, so I went on the advice from the boards. I do tend to dress up more than dress down (except at home or at the beach - LOL), and figured for the price of the cruise, there would be plenty of other women doing the same for the holidays. I was right.

You are right, the planning is at least 50% of the enjoyment of these trips. Please feel free to ask and we will try to answer.

If I can figure out how to do it, I will scan in the photos of formal and semi-formal night, and put them on my Webshots site so you can see what everyone was wearing, and get an idea of the types of photos are taken.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Bonnie

Aisling -

No one can EVER ask too many questions! And, planning the cruise is a huge part of the fun and joy for me, too, so please ask away! I will do my best to answer (probably ad nauseum) but as others join the thread they may have lots of good input as well! I just know the lessons I've learned over many DCL cruises and the first one is: only take half as many clothes as you think you will need!! Of course, for me, that is probably enough for two normal people~ LOL!

Tuxes -

I just checked with Chuck and he said that in your cruise documents (which you get about 3-4 weeks out) there will be a packet from the company with all info that you would be required to submit OR you can go to the website (for the company that DCL uses) and all the required measurements will be there. Chuck did strongly encourage that folks go to a tux shop or a tailor to make sure the measurements are tailor measurements. He said that tux shops will do them even if you aren't renting from them. Plus, the tailor won't let you fudge!! :teeth: Lastly, the tuxes are meant to fit a variety of folks so they have some built-in comfort measures............expandable waist straps, etc.

Formals -

I believe that Christmas is on Sunday and, in the past, on the Eastern, the formal/semi-formal nights were Sunday and Thursday (if I remember correctly). Our dining rotation for the Eastern (2001) was PLAPLAP (Parrot Cay, Lumiere's, Animator's Palate, Parrot Cay, etc) so we had formal night in Lumiere's which is what we like. I would think it a definite possibility that either formal night or semi-formal will be on Christmas. But, regardless, I plan to be a bit dressier that night. Last Christmas (2003), which I believe may have been semi-formal night but maybe not, I wore black satin pants, a gold lurex mock turtleneck and a beautiful holiday Disney Sweater that I bought at WDW before the cruise. DH and DS wore their tuxes and DD wore a lovely midnight blue slip dress with a short velvet bolero jacket. We had our best pictures that night with all the colors.

For formal night, I had on a floor length evening dinner suit, DH and DS wore their tuxes and DD wore a floor length formal. And, of course, not one of those pictures came out!! Others had on everything ranging from nice "church" clothes to cocktail dresses to full length beaded gowns. It was all about personal preference and comfort. There were also many folks in military, fire, and police dress uniforms (they got lots of attention and thank you's)!!

Christmas Eve is the night we sail and traditionally folks have not gotten dressed up because some have not received bags yet, folks are tired from traveling, and the excitement to see the ship and participate in the "sail-away" precludes any dressing up for the early seating!

Attire in the dining rooms is completely across the spectrum. Some have reported seeing folks in shorts and tee-shirts at dinner although I never have..............or I just didn't notice. I have also seen some families in evening attire almost every night. Bottom line is to be comfortable and do what makes you happy. From my observation, with men, you can never go wrong with a nice collared, button down shirt or golf shirt and dockers. That seemed to be popular on the less dressy nights.

DisneyJunkie -

IMHO, you will have an awesome time on the 7 day cruise. Especially if DS is a traveler (South Africa - WOW)! I have done two 4-day cruises and two 7-day and I would heartily recommend the 7 day. You actually can unpack, relax and learn the ship before it is time to repack and disembark. There are so many fun things to do and see. And, the teens had a great time either in the "STACK" or in their own groups. I would strongly encourage you to join us on the 7 day Christmas cruise.

Wow, girls, thanks for the great information! Bonnie, if you can scan the pics, I'd love to see them.
I have to get a garment-bag for our suits/dresses. We've never traveled with formal clothes before. Maybe my son will wear his Air Force dress uniform!! This cruise is going to be wonderful!

disneyjunkie, my son will be 13 1/2 on the cruise, so your son will have a built-in pal, and pals, with all the other Diskids coming. This is also our first cruise, and I didn't want to feel rushed, so we chose the 7 day. The cost is more, but Disney has taught me how to squeeze every drop out of every dollar!

Now I have to get some houseowrk done...so that I'm free tonight to go Dising in peace!

It looks like Bonnie and I did it again. Great minds think alike................she must have submitted right after I started writing and I didn't know she had already answered your questions. As always, she did a lovely job and her memory for specifics is much better than mine! :teeth:

Aisling, if you do rent tuxedos for the gentleman, I'm not sure they need to "lug" suits as well. Again, just a thought. Remember, you want to leave room for new purchases...........LOL!!! Besides the tux for formal/semi-formal nights, Chuck brings a nice sport coat and his Tommy Bahama shirts and pants. Plus, we opt to eat at Topsiders at least one night. They have dinner up there, as well.

Ginny, it is just too bad that we are so far away from each other! (That might be dangerous!)

Aisling, where I mentioned in my post that since it was my first cruise I relied heavily on advice from the boards, I really relied most heavily on advice from Ginny. As I said before, she has a wealth of experience and is so willing to share -- and, I learned something (again) from her post above. I would not have thought that Christmas Eve would be a bit more casual. But when you think about the possibility that some people may not have their luggage before dinner, that makes a lot of sense!

I agree with Ginny's thoughts on the dining rotation. I have wondered whether they will change the formal/semi-formal nights in accordance with the holidays. I would expect we will be able to find that out at the 60 day mark prior to the cruise.

Hope you are Dis'ing in peace! I've got to get some work done now for a client, so I will say goodnight, and if Ginny is reading this at 0500 -- good morning, Sunshine!!!! B.

Hi Cruisers!

I just thought of something...

How much time is there between the evening shoe and dinner? I have the second dinner seating, so do we go to the show dressed in our dinner attire, or is there time after the show to change? I'm just wondering if on the formal nights there will be people in gowns and tuxes in the theater. I know this sounds so trivial, but I I think I'd rather be able to be in more casual clothes for the show, and then dress up later.

Any thoughts?

Bonnie -

Reading e-mail at 5AM?? Me?? Who would do something like that...........especially when they are taking a long-awaited break from working.... at least for another week or two.......or more. These days, I don't read my e-mail until much, much later: 5:30AM! :cool2:

Aisling -

First, I have to tell you how beautiful I think your name is..........I have always loved it!!

Okay, on to your question: We have always had early seating so I can't tell you if folks change after the show before heading into dinner. I can tell you that on formal nights and semi-formal nights, the lines for pictures may be quite long so if you watch the show, run back to change and then try to get pics and then head to dinner....................I would be hard pressed to pack it all in.

I would suggest starting a thread for that question out on the main DCL DIS Board and see how others in similar situations handled it. There may well be plenty of time. Bonnie or Kim may have had late seating last time and might know.

We are like you. For us, the shows are more enjoyable in more comfortable clothing. And, I always bring a sweater or fleece jacket to watch their shows or the onboard movies. It is always chilly in the theatres to both DD and me BUT we bring one when we go to the theatre here at home, too.

Wow, this thread has doubled in size since the last time I checked in! Glad to see some new 'faces' :teeth:

Aisling -
We had the late dinner seating. We would get dressed for dinner and then go to the show. I imagine if I had to wait for my wife to get ready for dinner after the show, I would have gone hungry most nights. :duck:

Ginny -
When you guys had your brunch for 17, was that at Palo? I didn't realize they'd make reservations for groups that large.

We're planning on staying at WDW for NYE after the cruise as well. I can't wait for this trip!

grim pirate:

Aisling, we had the late seating. The early show starts at 6:30 and dinner is at 8:30 p.m. Most of the shows were about an hour long.

You want to make sure that you are on time for dinner. (If there are other parties at your table, they generally have to wait for everyone to be seated before the servers will take the table's order. With that in mind, if you choose to go to Topsider's or Palo for dinner and skip your dining rotation, remember to let your servers know the night before, so they will not be waiting on you.)

I think I went to the show most every night in what I was wearing for dinner. There didn't ever seem to be time to go and change in between. That may have been because we would generally catch up with some friends who had the early seating, and were on their way to the show as we were coming out. It was fun to get their take on dinner, what was good, what wasn't, etc. before we went in, and make plans for later in the evening if we hadn't already.

This included where to meet on Deck 9 for the sail-away party from Cozumel -- we happened to choose a spot for our own "wild" party that was directly overhead of some dear friends -- it seems we made quite a bit of noise.............
:cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :rockband::cool1: :cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

Grim -

Hi! I didn't know there was a private room at Palo's until I read it on the boards (and that was after my 2nd cruise). We did have our DIS brunch for 17 in the private room at Palo's. We had a terrific time and really enjoyed getting to meet each other. To be honest, 17 is the max I would have in the private room............otherwise, we would be sitting in each other's laps. Also, I would suggest dressing in cool clothes because I remember we all discussed the room becoming very warm even in December (mimosa's not withstanding) ;) They did bring us a big fan but I still felt like an egg on the sidewalk!

If we had a group larger than that, then they will split us up into different tables in the main Palo dining room. We did that on the Halloween '01 cruise and it seemed to work well although some of the "group sharing" was lost.

Grim, it is nice to "meet" you! We will have a great time!

Ginny

I was very excited to see this post the other day. We all should know each other well before the cruise. As every one can see and what Bonnie has stated Ginny is the one to answer all your questions, but I like Bonnie will help too. So let me slow down and tell you about our family. There are 6 of us my parents and my family. DH(Matt-47), DD(Megan21), DD(Katherine-15) Kim (me44) DGF(Ken-72), and DGM(Mary-69). We are on Deck 6 rooms 6514, 6512 and 6511. The girls have their own room this year. Megan thinks it's great because the room is in her name because she will be 21. We have early dinner so it can't help with the question to dress before the show. We usually stayed in our dinner clothes for the show. Matt rented the tux for the last cruise and will do it again along with my father. We ordered online 3 weeks before the sailing. Matt had no problems with the fit. For formal and simi-formal nights the girls and I wore everything from a silk pantsuit, tea length dresses and a long prom dress. Since we drove we packed in 3 large suit cases and a garmet bag. Matt has alredy to me to cut back because we are flying this time. I am already planning my outfits for dinner and plan for the girls and myself to wear something red or
Christmas like on Christmas Eve very casual.

Franco56- I have had no problems getting reservations on any cruise for the spa. It is just nice to have 1 or 2 times picked out before your go so if your first time is taken you have a back up. I have always booked my excursion through DCL at the 60 day mark with no problems.

I pulled out the Navigator to check the church times there was a Catholic Mass every morning at 8:15. On Sunday there was a Interdenominational Service at 9:30. On Christmas Eve there was a Hannukah Service at 5:15pm and Midnignt Mass. On Christmas Day there were two Christmas Masses on at 8:15 and the second at 11:15 with the Interdenominational Service at 10:00am

We spent alot to time together on this cruise by doing alot of the family activities. We did family Disney triva (which we won), they have build your own gingerbread house (which you get to take back to your cabin), the galley tour, Family Animation-learn to draw one of your favorite Disney friends, Bingo, Walk the Plank game show, So You Think You Know Your Music-music triva the the Cruise Staff. Katherine spent very little time in the Stack( it might have been that she had not see much of her sister since Megan had been away at college)

Something I think most of us did on the Christmas 2003 crusie was to bring things with us to decorate our cabins and our doors. It made it seem more like home.

Will that's all for now. It's raining hard here now. Frances has arrived . Schools are getting out early.
Ginny it does remind me of last year at this time. Also thanks for asking about Matt . His foot is almost back to normal this one has taken longer then the left.

Talk to you all soon
KIM

Ginny,
Thank you about my name!
It's been pronounced so many ways, not too many people know it's "ash-ling".

And Kim, hi!
Thank you for checking your Navigator about the Catholic Mass. Christmas Mass will be wonderful, being on a Disney ship and at sea. I have a lot to be thankful for.

I just bought a red garment bag to match our luggage, so I'm slowly getting everything we're going to need, bit by bit.
I just packed our plastic ponchos; will we need them on the cruise? DH thinks I'm crazy, packing already, but I explained to him that I'm just putting all these unused travel things all in one spot, it not exactly packing. Well, maybe technically it is LOL! OK I'll admit it, I've begun packing for our trip 15 months away! Woo hoo!

Aisling, your name is so pretty! I have to admit, I have never heard it before. It sounds Gaelic - is it irish or scottish?

We purposely did not unpack one suitcase from the 12/20 cruise and stored it up in the garage - it contains the Christmas decorations we brought with us, ziplock bags, lanyards and KTTW card holders, a wad of travelers' cheques, duct tape, and I think an over-the-door shoe holder. I have a little spot in the closet in my office that is collecting items for the cruise, also.

Is the fund in your jar growing? I have started throwing $2 in there a day - that would be a nice sum to put towards our onboard charges!

Grim, where are you thinking of staying NYE?

I had asked Tammy at DU for some suggestions as to which park to go to for NYE. She said that Epcot doesn't fill up as quickly as the others, and that we would need to get there at least by 11:00 a.m. and plan on staying in the park until we were ready to go home. She said that often the parks reach their capacity on holidays, and if we were to leave, we might not be able to get back in later.

Disneyjunkie, have you decided what to do yet? If we can answer any questions or help you in your decision re 4 day versus 7 day, please ask! Christmas on the Magic was ..............Magical!

We'll be staying at our home away from home - Beach Club Villas.
Tammy is right. Epcot also absorbs crowds better than MK or MGM. And NOTHING beats being able to take a 5 minute walk back to your room when everyone else is stuck in the parking lot or waiting in a huge line for a bus.

We were there for NYE 2002/2003 and it poured rain. Epcot wasn't crowded at all that night :teeth:
We actually ended up watching the fireworks from our balcony at the Dolphin due to the rain.

Grim, are you a DVC member? Were you able to book those dates already? I would love to stay at SSR or BCV before the cruise, and that seems like a good way to do it. Had you stayed at any of the DVC resorts before you purchased your membership?

I have been at Epcot in a downpour before, and was amazed at how quickly the park emptied out. In about 15 minutes, about 70% of the guests were gone, and the rain stopped!

I just found a thread on the Teen board for our cruise! My 12 year old son Jesse just registered on the Dis as Aladdin's Clone, and he's hoping to "meet" some Christmas Diser's there! Jesse is now an official Diser!

Bonnie, the name Aisling is indeed Irish!

Hi everyone, I am indeed planning to do this sailing. I called cruise.com this morning to get a price quote. I've been trying to get a quote from Costco's but the hold times are so long when I call. As soon as I get a quote from Costco I'll be ready to book.
:hyper:

Anyone have any suggestions for tour activities for young teens?

disneyjunkie,
try to be patient with Costco, it saved me $700!

From what I've been reading, there are so many activities onboard for all ages. I know there's a teen club that has scheduled activities every day, and a place to just hang out to mingle with kids their own age.

By Tour activities, do you mean the excursions? There's a list on the DCL site, and it's LONG! So many choices.
